Is Ethical Counseling Possible: A Virtue Ethics Approach to Philosophical Counseling?

Is ethical counseling possible? This paper attempts to demonstrate that the possibility of ethical counseling. The second intention is to inquire into the basic appearance of virtue ethics approach to ethical counseling by Alasdair MacIntyre’s virtue ethics. In the foreword section, I surveyed ethics and morals in the view of conventional psychotherapy and psychotherapy in Taiwan. For the existence of ethical suffering from the multiple realities of a suffering experience, it is indicated that suffering not only exists, it is at the core of Chinese suffering. From the current development of ethical therapy in psychotherapy, that could explain the feasibility and necessity of ethical counseling. In the second section, I try to analyze the points of ethical counseling, especially in situation and relationship. Ethical suffering serves as the focus of counseling and its contents include: agents, relationships and situations. An individual in suffering, it is usually in an ethical or moral situation. The cause of ethical suffering is a certain cut off or conflict in the relationship between a sort of external form of ethical humanity and pondering space in individual morality. In the Third, to enter the main part of this paper, I attempts to search for experiences from ethical therapy that can be applied to ethical counseling and then try to study the contents of ethical counseling from the essence of philosophical counseling. To do this, the paper first gives a brief description of Alasdair MacIntyre’s thinking on virtue ethics and then the correlation between virtue ethics and ethical practices. Fourth, construction of ethical counseling is attempted based on Alasdair MacIntyre’s virtue ethics. This section is studied from the standpoint of ethical diagnosis and therapy models.
CASPT2 Study on the Low-lying Electronic States of 1,3,5-C6H3Cl3 + Ion

The multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2) and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods were employed to calculate the geometries and energy levels for the low-lying electronic states of 1,3,5-C6H3Cl3 + ion. The CASPT2 values for the 1,3,5-C6H3Cl3 + ion were in reasonable agreement with the available experimental values. The current calculations augmented previous theoretical investigations on the ground state and assigned the low-lying excited electronic states of the 1,3,5-C6H3Cl3 + ion. The Jahn-Teller distortion in the excited electronic state for the 1,3,5-C6H3Cl3 + ion were reported for the first time.

Parthenogenetic embryonic stem (pES) cells could provide a valuable model for research into genomic imprinting and X-linked diseases. In this study, pES cell lines were established from oocytes of hybrid offspring of Kunming and 129/Sv mice, and pluripotency of pES cells was evaluated. The pES cells maintained in the undifferentiated state for more than 50 passages had normal karyotypes with XX sex chromosomes and exhibited high activities of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) and telomerase. Meanwhile, these cells expressed ES cell molecular markers SSEA-1, Oct-4, Nanog, and GDF3 but not SSEA-3 detected by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. The pES cells could be differentiated into various types of cells from three germ layers in vitro by analysis of embryoid bodies (EBs) with immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR, and in vivo by observation of pES cell-derived teratoma sections. Therefore, the established pES cell lines contained all features of mouse ES cells. This work provides a new strategy for isolating pES cells from Kunming mice, and the pES cell lines could be applied as the cell model in research into genomic imprinting and epigenetic regulation of Kunming mice.
Notch Inhibitor: a Promising Carcinoma Radiosensitizer

Radiotherapy is an important part of modern cancer management for many malignancies, and enhancing the radiosensitivity of tumor cells is critical for effective cancer therapies. The Notch signaling pathway plays a key role in regulation of numerous fundamental cellular processes. Further, there is accumulating evidence that dysregulated Notch activity is involved in the genesis of many human cancers. As such, Notch inhibitors are attractive therapeutic agents, although as for other anticancer agents, they exhibit significant and potential side effects. Thus, Notch inhibitors may be best used in combination with other agents or therapy. Herein, we describe evidence supporting the use of Notch inhibitors as novel and potent radiosensitizers in cancer therapy.

Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is one of the most well-known aquatic weeds as it causes problems in watercourses all over the world. This invasive species is fast-growing and thus has the potential for its use in preparing growth medium of microorganisms. Toward it, the pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification are positively the decisive processes. But there are other crucial processes, which are usually ignored by researchers. To the best of my knowledge, this presented work is the first time discovering that the juice obtained from water lettuce is valuable. Except for sterilization, no treatment is needed for the water lettuce’s juice and it can be directly served for cell growth. For Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia pastoris, Bacillus subtilis, Lactococcus Lactis, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus plantarum, the cell density in the broth of water lettuce’s juice as the only carbon source is 10-60% higher than that in LB, YPD, BHI, M17, MRS. We then examined the production of microbial lipid by YM prepared in the juice of water lettuce. In comparison to commercial medium YM broth, the YM with juice caused 84% increase in the production of microbial lipid. A simple process of collecting juice notably increased productivity.

Purpose: To assess the clinical manifestations and multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) findings of afferent loop syndrome (ALS) and to determine the role of MDCT on treatment decisions. Materials and Methods: From January 2004 to December 2008, 1,100 patients had undergone gastroenterostomy reconstruction in our institution. Of these, 22 (2%) patients were diagnosed as ALS after surgery that included Roux-en-Y gastroenterotomy (n=9), Billroth-II gastrojejunostomy (n=7), and Whipple’s operation (n=6). Clinical manifestations and MDCT features of these patients were recorded and statistically analyzed. The presumed etiologies of obstruction shown on the MDCT were correlated with clinical information and confirmed by surgery or endoscopic biopsy. Results: The most common clinical symptom was acute abdominal pain, presenting in 18 patients (82%). We found that a fluid-filled C-shaped afferent loop in combination with valvulae conniventes projecting into the lumen was the most common MDCT features of ALS. Malignant causes of ALS, such as local recurrence and carcinomatosis, are the most common etiologies of obstruction. These etiologies and associated complications can be predicted 100% by MDCT. Conclusion: Our results suggest that MDCT is a reliable modality for assessing the etiologies of ALS and guiding treatment decisions.
