Ghost Imaging with Different Speckle Sizes of Thermal Light
Jue Wang,Renlong Yu,Yu Xin,Yanming Shao,Yanru Chen,Qi Zhao 한국광학회 2016 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.20 No.1
In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally analyze the impact of speckle size of pseudo-thermallight source on ghost imaging. A larger size of speckle can bring improvements in SNR and visibility. At the same time, the edge blur of the retrieved image will become more serious. We also present a setupwhich can mitigate the edge blur of larger speckle while maintaining the advantages of higher SNR andvisibility by changing the speckle size of the object beam with a concave lens.

Background: Excision repair crossing-complementing group 2 (ERCC2), also called xeroderma pigmentosum complementary group D (XPD), plays a crucial role in the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. Previous epidemiological studies have reported associations between ERCC2 polymorphisms and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk, but the results have remained controversial. Materials and Methods: We conducted this meta-analysis based on eligible case-control studies to investigate the role of two ERCC2 polymorphisms (Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn) in determining susceptibility to NHL. Ten case-control studies from several electronic databases were included in our study up to August 14, 2014. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects models to estimate the association strength. Results: The combined results based on all studies did not show any association between Lys751Gln/Asp312Asn polymorphisms and NHL risk for all genetic models. Stratified analyses by histological subtype and ethnicity did not indicate any significant association between Lys751Gln polymorphism and NHL risk. However, a significant reduced risk of NHL was found among population-based studies (Lys/Gln versus Lys/Lys: OR=0.87, 95% CI=0.77-0.99, P=0.037) but not hospital-based studies. As for Asp312Asn polymorphism, there was no evidence for the association between this polymorphism and the risk of NHL in all subgroup analyses. Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that there may be no association between Lys751Gln/Asp312Asn polymorphism and the risk of NHL and its two subtypes, whereas ERCC2 Lys751Gln heterozygote genotype may provide protective effects against the risk of NHL in population-based studies. Therefore, large-scale and well-designed studies are needed to clarify the effects of haplotypes, gene-gene, and gene-environment interactions on these polymorphisms and the risk of NHL and its different histological subtypes in an ethnicity specific population.

A generalized base station-relay-user equipment (BS-Relay-UE) beamforming design is investigated for a cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multirelay networks with imperfect channel state information (CSI). In order to minimize the worst-case mean square error (MSE) which is subject to a semi-infinite (SI) relay power constraints, a generalized optimal beamforming structure for the relay amplifying matrix is effectively proposed, and then the SI relay power constraints are converted into linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) version. In such conversion, the objective problem recasts as a decoupled biconvex semidefinite programming (SDP) one which can be efficiently solved by the proposed alternating algorithm. The system performance has been verified in terms of worst-case MSE using a set of qualitative analyses. The results show us that the proposed beamforming method outperforms the conventional schemes and can also effectively reduce the computational complexity when it is compared to the cutting-set schemes and also to the nonrobust ones.

Generation of Full Poincaré Beams on Arbitrary Order Poincaré Sphere
Jue Wang,Lin Wang,Yu Xin 한국광학회 2017 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.1 No.6
We firstly develop a straightforward method to generate full Poincaré beams with any polarizationgeometry over an arbitrary order Poincaré sphere. We implement this by coaxial superposition of twoorthogonal circular polarized beams with alternative topological charges with the help of a Mach–Zehnderinterferometer. Secondly we find the existence of singularity points. And the inner relationship betweentheir characteristics and the order of Poincaré spheres is also studied. In summary, this work providesa convenient and effective way to generate vector beams and to control their polarization states.

Objective: The prognostic role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in bladder cancer remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to explore any association between overexpression and survival outcomes. Methods: We systematically searched for studies investigating the relationships between VEGF expression and outcome of bladder cancer patients. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. After careful review, survival data were extracted from eligible studies. A meta-analysis was performed to generate combined hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). Results: A total of 1,285 patients from 11 studies were included in the analysis. Our results showed that tissue VEGF overexpression in patients with bladder cancer was associated with poor prognosis in terms of OS (HR, 1.843; 95% CI, 1.231-2.759; P = 0.003), DFS (HR, 1.498; 95% CI, 1.255-1.787; P = 0.000) and DSS (HR, 1.562; 95% CI, 0.996-1.00; P = 0.052), though the difference for DSS was not statistically significant. In addition, there was no evidence of publication bias as suggested by Begg's and Egger's tests except for DFS (Begg's test, P = 0.221; Egger's test, P = 0.018). Conclusion: The present meta-analysis indicated elevated VEGF expression to be associated with a poor prognosis in patients with bladder cancer.

Classic causes of fever of unknown origin (FUO) are infections, neoplasms, collagen vascular diseases and drugs. However, large studies of FUO have consistently reported that a considerable proportion of patients with FUO remain undiagnosed. We report a patient with a prolonged course of FUO and progressive pulmonary nodules in whom extensive clinical and laboratory evaluation did not reveal specific diagnosis. The patient had recurrent episodes of fever for more than three years, and the pulmonary nodules gradually progressed in size and number despite administration of antibiotics including antifungal and antituberculosis agents. Several pathologic examinations demonstrated an organizing pneumonia or non-neoplastic lung parenchyma with lymphoplasmacytic infiltration only. After a protracted course of disease, we thought that this patient might have lymphoproliferative disorder, possibly EBV-associated, and started anti-cancer chemotherapy. He was successfully treated with eight cycles of chemotherapy including cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone (CHOP).(Korean J Med 71:442-448, 2006)

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of response to continuous-infusion ifosfamide and doxorubicin combination as second-line chemotherapy for patients with recurrent or refractory osteosarcoma. Materials and Methods: Eighteen recurrent or refractory osteosarcoma patients who were treated with continuous-infusion ifosfamide and doxorubicin combination between May 1999 and April 2011 were included in the analysis. Ifosfamide at $12g/m^2$ was administered by intravenous continuous infusion over 3 days, and doxorubicin $60mg/m^2$ was administered as an intravenous bolus injection on day 1. The combination therapy was repeated every 3 weeks. Treatment was continued until evidence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Results: The patients (ages 7-53 years) received a total of 42 cycles of chemotherapy (median: 2 courses; range: 2-5 courses). The overall response rate was 0% and the disease control rate was 22.3%, with four patients having stable disease. The median time to progression and overall survival time were 2 months (range: 2-5 months) and 9 months (range: 3-29 months), respectively. Major severe toxicities were leucopenia 7 (38.9%), nausea and vomiting 3 (16.7%) and alopecia 9 (50%). There were no treatment-related deaths. Conclusions: In our experience, continuous-infusion ifosfamide and doxorubicin combination therapy at this dosage and schedule was found to be well tolerated and moderate effective, which could be considered as salvage therapy for patients with recurrent or refractory osteosarcoma. Further assessment is necessary to confirm the safety and efficacy of this treatment.
Antioxidant properties of porcine liver proteins hydrolyzed using Monascus purpureus
Hui-Chuan Yu,Jue-Liang Hsu,Chi-I. Chang,Fa-Jui Tan 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.5
In this study, the antioxidant activities of porcine liver proteins, hydrolyzed using Alcalase®, papain, pepsin, or a microbial suspension of Monascus purpureus (APLH, PaPLH, PePLH, and MPLH, respectively), were investigated. The results indicated that the yield and degree of hydrolysis (DH) of hydrolysates increased with hydrolysis time. The highest yield and peptide content were obtained from APLH, whereas the DH of PaPLH was higher than that of the others. MPLH exhibited the highest 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and reducing power, whereas APLH and PaPLH exhibited the higher ferrous ion-chelating ability than that of the MPLH. The molecular weights of all the hydrolysates were <10 kDa. The PaPLH exhibited the highest contents of total amino acids and hydrophobic amino acids. Fifteen antioxidant fractions obtained from MPLH contained one or more of the following amino acids in their sequences: Tyr, Trp, Ala, Pro, Met, Lys, Asp, Cys, Val, Leu, and His.
