Representations of Criminality in the Opening Mise-en-Scenes of Great Expectations

        Younghee Kho 19세기영어권문학회 2019 19세기 영어권 문학 Vol.23 No.1

This paper attempts to compare and contrast the opening chapters of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations (1861) with the mise-en-scènes of its recent film adaptations, Mike Newell’s BBC version (2012) and Alfonso Cuarón’s American version (1998). The paper chooses the opening scenes, assuming that Pip’s encounter with Magwitch in these scenes reveal crime and criminality as an inevitable condition for human existence. Because of this encounter, Pip is forced not only to commit misdemeanors that continually rouse his feeling of guilt, but also to accept Magwitch as his father figure. Against his or her intention or will, Dickens seems to suggest, one cannot avoid being criminalized as long as one is born and lives. However, this idea is lost in adapting the novel into both films. In order to understand how the idea is vanished and what its consequence are, this paper attempts to take a close look at the mise-en-scènes of each work. Mise-en-scène, signifying anything put into a camera frame to produce particular impressions, is a useful means to trace the differences the films make. The combined use of Dickens’s autodiegetic and heterodiegetic narratives in the early chapters is reformulated in the cinematic techniques the directors employ: while Newell’s film restrains itself adopting Pip’s autodiegetic view and tries to establish its own heterodiegetic one, Cuarón’s film makes it explicit that the audience sees the world through Finn’s subjective viewpoint. Paying attention to such difference helps us see how the directors builds their works upon the original or diverts from it. The comparison of the mise-en-scènes produces a new perspective from which we can appreciate Dickens’s novel and re-evaluate the adaptations.

White Savages of the Islands : R. L. Stevenson's Pacific Fiction and Class

        Younghee Kwon 19세기영어권문학회 2011 19세기 영어권 문학 Vol.15 No.1

This essay examines the extent to which class dynamics undermine imperial subjectivity and the basis of whiteness in R. L. Stevenson's Pacific fiction. My focal point in reading The Beach of Falesa is lower-class white men's contradictory standing in a colonial site. Stuck between the imperatives of white supremacy and that of survival, the beachcomber characters undergo diverse processes of ‘going native.’ In doing so, they reveal the fictitious ground of whiteness, debunking the class and racial hierarchy. While The Beach of Falesa saves its playful and optimistic tone mainly through successful interracial relationship, The Ebb-Tide posits a bleak world of crime and punishment. Focusing on its intriguing microcosm of class relation, I explore how it resonates with the British middle class' deep anxiety over the empire migration of the lower class and the moral degeneration of the gentlemanly agents of the empire. Further, the subtle doubling of the novella's authority figure and its meanest scoundrel indicates the irretrievable loss of a sure ethical ground and legitimacy in the combined process of colonial domination and class politics.

A Study on Current Status Analysis of NPOs

        ( Younghee Noh ),( Sang-yup Lee ) 융합연구학회 2019 융합연구학회지 Vol.3 No.2

In this study, 12,795 NPOs, including both registered and terminated in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), were surveyed to reorganize the current status of Non-Profit Organizations. This study was conducted to analyze the past and present of NPOs and to be used as policy data for the revitalization of NPOs. This study analyzed NPO’s current status into three categories: basic information, business contents, and organizational status. First, the basic information status was subdivided into the status by detailed types, regions, cities, counties, districts, sub-ministerial departments, organizational types, authoritative agencies, and established years. The status of the business contents was divided and analyzed as the business subject, purpose, area and organization type by items. In addition, the organization status included the relevant agencies and supporting entities, support methods, operation status, abolition year, certification year, support year, relevant laws, establishment foundation law and salary payment. The workforce status and structure included the number of employees, members, number of volunteers, other personnel, average age, and average education. Finally, the decision-making structure was analyzed by dividing details into general meetings, boards of directors, operating boards, other meetings and corporate governance. As a result, we found that the majority of NPOs had high operating rates, and NPOs were heavily distributed around the Seoul metropolitan area, Gyeonggi, and North Jeolla Province. In addition, social welfare was concentrated in the business area and type of non-profit civic groups, and it was difficult to receive support regardless of region, type of organization, year of establishment, or type of detail as a support method. Therefore, it is important to find a way for NPOs to be established in various types and fields of business in the future, and above all, it will be important to find ways to increase the support method and support ratio so that NPOs can perform their roles well.

White Teeth and the Making of the Multiethnic Subject

        ( Younghee Kwon ) 한국영어영문학회 2012 영어 영문학 Vol.58 No.6

This essay is an attempt to critique the notion of hybridity that has so far facilitated a liberal multiculturalist reading of White Teeth. For an alternative framework, it posits the multiethnic subject-making to examine in what ways the novel questions the premises of liberal multiculturalism. In this vein, this study suggests that Smith throws some significant light on the underside of holding multiple racial/ethnic identities while not bypassing its utopian possibilities. In case of the first-generation male characters, their crossracial/homosocial friendship becomes a platform for a mode of egalitarian belonging across the racial divide. It further implies a symbolic union between working-class white and nonwhite immigrant. The younger generation, in contrast, undergoes problems of racial, ethnic, cultural affiliations in far more complicated ways than the older one. Above all, White Teeth demonstrates the subtle workings of liberal multiculturalism, within which the younger characters are constructed to be a multiethnic subject in varied modes. It delineates the formation mainly by exploring the persisting legacies of Britain`s imperial history that partake in their subject-making. The novel, in doing so, obliquely suggests that the younger generation is to confront the past that is a seminal part of their present life rather than have the freedom to throw it away to be a carefree member of a multicultural society.

“her figure defined by light”: An Analysis of Light and Music in James Joyce’s “Araby” and Dennis Courtney’s Araby

        ( Younghee Kho ) 한국제임스조이스학회 2020 제임스조이스저널 Vol.26 No.1

This essay explores how light and music are deployed in Joyce’s “Araby” and its film adaptation Araby by Dennis Courtney. In Joyce’s short story, both light and music are utilized in order to heighten the boy’s enchantment with Mangan’s sister and his subsequent disillusion. The lights that illuminate her on the stairs, for example, blind the boy to her real person and desire, causing him to perceive her only as an object for his own desire. Meanwhile, references to music in “Araby” reveal how the boy interacts with the world. According to Hass, music in Dubliners not only helps define the reality, but also has the characters transcend reality and reveal themselves. Jok, on the other hand, explores music and musicality within Joyce’s language. In adapting “Araby” into his short film, Courtney seems to be aware of the role of light and music. This essay thus argues that he skillfully adopts such cinematic techniques as lighting, music, and other sound effects in order to deliver and enhance the theme of the story, thereby narrating how the boy romanticizes his love, experiences discord with reality, and ultimately faces the moment of disillusionment more effectively than any storytelling does.
