Fatty acid-amino acid conjugates (FACs), first identified from beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua larvae (Alborn et al., 1997), have been found in noctuid as well as sphingid caterpillar oral secretions and especially volicitin [N-(17-hydroxylinolenoyl)- L-glutamine, 17OH-volicitn] and its biochemical precursor, N-linolenoyl- L-glutamine, are known elicitors of induced volatile emissions in corn plants. We conducted FAC screening of 29 lepidopteran species and found FACs in 19 of these species (Yoshinaga & Mori et al., 2010). Thus, FACs are quite commonly synthesized through a broad range of lepidopteran caterpillars. From an evolutionary perspective, it is presumed that volicitin and the other FACs, although consequently unfavorable to the insect in the plant-herbivore interactions, are produced because they are essential part of the primary metabolism of the insects. In this context, we suggested that FACs in Spodoptera litura play an active role in nitrogen assimilation by regulating the amount of glutamine in the larval midgut (Yoshinaga & Mori et al., 2008). The benefits of the physiological function of FACs for the herbivores need to outweigh the costs caused by induction of plant defense
Mammalian Bax initiates plant cell death through organelle destruction
Yoshinaga, Keiko,Arimura, Shin-ich,Hirata, Aiko,Niwa, Yasuo,Yun, Dae-Jin,Tsutsumi, Nobuhiro,Uchimiya, Hirofumi,Yamada, Maki Kawai Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research 2005 Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research Vol.2005 No.
Mammalian Bax is known to cause cell death when expressed in plants. We examined transgenic plants expressing both Bax and oraganelle-targeted green fluorescent protein to determine the cellular changes that occur during Bax-induced cell death. The mitochondria changed morphologically from being bacilli-shaped to being round, eventually becoming swollen. Mitochondria streaming also stopped. The chloroplasts lost membrane function and their contents leaked out, followed by the disruption of the vacuole. Light was not essential for Bax-induced ion leakage or organelle disruption. These results indicate that Bax-induces temporal and spatial cell death events at the organelle level in the plant. A heterologous system, using Bax, would therefor be available to investigate cell death, which is commonly conserved in animals and plants

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the prognostic value of pretreatment inflammation-based scoring systems in terms of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with germ cell tumors (GCTs) receiving bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 63 patients with GCTs retrospectively. The Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, prognostic index, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), systemic immune-inflammation index, and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) were measured in all patients before chemotherapy. To assess the predictive ability of each scoring system, areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated, and multivariate analysis was performed to identify associations between the predictive scores and OS. Results: Of all the inflammation-based scoring systems, the GPS had the greatest area under the curve (0.847) for predicting OS, followed by the PNI (0.829) and AGR (0.810). Kaplan–Meier analyses revealed that the GPS, PNI, and AGR were significantly associated with OS, whereas the GPS, PLR, and PNI were significantly associated with PFS. In the multivariate analysis, the GPS was an independent predictor of OS and PFS. Conclusions: We demonstrated that the GPS was the most valuable biomarker of OS and PFS in patients with GCTs.
A Turnout without Movable Parts for Magnetically Levitated Vehicles with Hybrid Magnets
Kakinoki, Toshio,Yamaguchi, Hitoshi,Yoshinaga, Naoya,Mukai, Eiichi,Nishi, Hiroyuki Journal of International Conference on Electrical 2014 Journal of international Conference on Electrical Vol.3 No.3
This paper describes a turnout without movable parts for magnetically levitated vehicles with hybrid magnets, which have been studied by the authors in place of streetcars. Their low construction cost and low maintenance is key to their practical use. Magnetic levitation systems using forces of attraction can generate guidance force automatically, but the damping force against lateral motion is negligible. However, the lateral damping characteristic was improved by using divided iron type magnets and rails. Using this turnout without movable parts will facilitate smooth direction switching.
Construction of branched DNA for SNP determination on glass-chip using photochemical ligation

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most frequent form of sequence variation among individuals. Besides, sequence specific DNA detection has been an issue for its application in the diagnosis of pathogenic and genetic diseases. Many detection techniques that rely upon target hybridization with radioactive, fluorescent, chemiluminescent, and other types of label probes have been developed so far. Chip based detection for analysis of biomedical features like SNPs is not widely used in routine clinical settings, because it needs lot of improvement in terms of reproducibility and fidelity. Here, we have shown SNP typing on glass chip using KRAS oncogene sequence as a model. We have also shown that this SNP typing can be multiplexed by the further optimization of the photoligation protocol for high throughput detection that may lead to determine the sequence selectivity, less restricted reaction conditions and high efficiency.
