        Korean College Students’ Reading Strategy Use to Comprehend Academic Texts in English

        This study explored the relationship between the use of reading strategies and reading comprehension ability of Korean college students when they read academic texts in English. This study also examined differences in the use of reading strategies when the students read academic texts versus when they read non-academic texts. One hundred fifteen college students participated in this study. The results indicated that the Korean college students’ reading comprehension ability was to some degree related to their reading strategy use when reading academic texts in English; the higher their reading comprehension ability, the more they used sophisticated reading strategies. The Korean college students used more volume of reading strategies when reading academic texts than when reading non-academic texts; they frequently used some specific reading strategies when reading academic texts, whereas they did not often use these strategies when reading non-academic texts. Based on these findings, instructional implications are discussed.

        고등학교 영어 쓰기 평가에 대한 학생 인식 : 지역별, 학교 유형별 비교

        This study explored how high school students perceive a classroom-based English writing assessment. For this study, six survey questions were formulated based on the research previously conducted and the responses from 954 high school students at 30 high schools across the country were collected and analyzed. Schools were carefully sampled considering the school types (e.g., a general school, or a school for science or foreign language study, or a school for vocational education) and the locations (e.g., a big city, or a small city, or a rural area). The results of survey indicated that assessing writing occurred at least once a semester in classrooms. It was also shown that the practices of assessing English writing are different according to the locations and types of the schools that students attended. Furthermore, many of the students indicated that their teachers did not assess English writing as often as they should, because assessing English writing in classrooms requires extra time and effort on the part of the teachers’ work. The results are discussed and implications for pedagogy are suggested.

        초ㆍ중ㆍ고등학생들의 자기주도학습 인식 변화의 연도별 추이 및 국가수준 영어 학업성취도와의 상관관계 분석

        This study aims to explore to what degree Korean primary and secondary school students perceive a self-regulated learning in their study and examine its trend through years. Furthermore, this study is also purposed to determine relationships between the students' self-regulated learning and their English achievements. This study analyzed a massive data set of the students' National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) and surveys which were collected and provided by Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). For data analysis, descriptive statistics and a multiple regression analysis were mainly conducted: the results indicated that students' perception in the self-regulated learning was vary depending their school levels and achievement levels and there were positive correlations between students' perception in the self-regulated learning and their English achievements.

        낙태죄의 존폐에 대한 고찰

        As abortion pills that are taken orally have been recently developed, the controversy surrounding abortion is resurfacing. This controversy is ongoing not just domestically but worldwide; while religious and ethical organizations argue that abortion should never be permitted on the basis of “rights of the fetus” and religious and ethical reasons, others voice the opinion that abortion should be permitted on the basis of the right to pursue happiness and the dignity of mankind. Since the fetus was seen as part of the maternal body in the laws of Ancient Greece, abortion was not seen as a crime. The rights of fetus began to be protected under laws against abortion from the laws of Middle Age church laws and German common laws. The ideological background involved Christian beliefs and the ‘ensoulment theory’ that soul lives within the body. The believers of this theory reasoned that after conception, the soul enters the fetus within 10 weeks and so killing the baby after that time is equal to murdering a human being. Caroina criminal law distinguished the fetus with life from the fetus without, and deemed it murder only when the former was aborted. Although the rights of the fetus is protected in principle by criminal law chapter 27, act 268, but abortion is allowed when necessary according to the adaption rules of Mother and Child Health Care Law. In actuality, it is extremely difficult to determine to what extent the fetus can be seen as an entity with human rights. In the case of Korea, abortion was prohibited as criminal law was established in 1953, but the legal case of aborting a baby within 28 weeks of pregnancy was established with the enactment of the mother and Child Health Care Law. But the increase of leniency on limits on abortion in the 1970s can’t be directly attributed to social demand. It can be seen as a solution on the national level to solve the social problem of sudden population boost and to decrease the discrepancy between the laws and the reality, taking in the international trend of weakening limits against abortion. It can also be seen as an accepting the idea of controlling the population in politics. The making of abortion a criminal offence is not to control women’s rights to have a sexual relationship but to value and protect the rights of the fetus. The High Court of Korea punished a doctor who negligently killed a fetus and legally treated the fetus as a human being. The reason why other developed nations like the United States of America-where sexual activities are more openly discussed has lower abortion rate is because they adopted more systemic sex education programs. It is practical to educate people about the use of contraception to avoid having an unwanted child. Abortion rate cannot be decreased by forcing people have ethical sex. Hence, a detailed sex education programs should be adopted to educate teenagers. For example, by inviting an expert to educate middle and high school students about pregnancy and contraception or even showing students DVDs about abortion to make them realize the seriousness of the effects of having unsafe sex, the abortion rate could be reduced.

        Antiangiogenic Activity of the Lipophilic Antimicrobial Peptides from an Endophytic Bacterial Strain Isolated from Red Pepper Leaf

        The induction of angiogenesis is a crucial step in tumor progression, and therefore, efficient inhibition of angiogenesis is considered a powerful strategy for the treatment of cancer. In the present study, we report that the lipophilic antimicrobial peptides from EML-CAP3, a new endophytic bacterial strain isolated from red pepper leaf (Capsicum annuum L.), exhibit potent antiangiogenic activity both in vitro and in vivo. The newly obtained antimicrobial peptides effectively inhibited the proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells at subtoxic doses. Furthermore, the peptides suppressed the in vitro characteristics of angiogenesis such as endothelial cell invasion and tube formation stimulated by vascular endothelial growth factor, as well as neovascularization of the chorioallantoic membrane of growing chick embryos in vivo without showing cytotoxicity. Notably, the angiostatic peptides blocked tumor cell-induced angiogenesis by suppressing the expression levels of hypoxia-inducible $factor-1{\alpha}$ and its target gene, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). To our knowledge, our findings demonstrate for the first time that the antimicrobial peptides from EML-CAP3 possess antiangiogenic potential and may thus be used for the treatment of hypervascularized tumors.

        Development of a Novel Class of Mitochondrial Ubiquinol–Cytochrome <i>c</i> Reductase Binding Protein (UQCRB) Modulators as Promising Antiangiogenic Leads

        <P>Recently, we identified a novel therapeutic target and a small molecule for regulating angiogenesis. Our study showed that ubiquinol–cytochrome <I>c</I> reductase binding protein (UQCRB) of the mitochondrial complex III plays a crucial role in hypoxia-induced angiogenesis via mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated signaling. Herein, we developed new synthetic small molecules that specifically bind to UQCRB and regulate its function. To improve the pharmacological properties of 6-((1-hydroxynaphthalen-4-ylamino)dioxysulfone)-2<I>H</I>-naphtho[1,8-<I>bc</I>]thiophen-2-one (HDNT), a small molecule that targets UQCRB, a series of HDNT derivatives were designed and synthesized. Several derivatives showed a significant increase in hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) inhibitory potency compared to HDNT. The compounds bound to UQCRB and suppressed mitochondrial ROS-mediated hypoxic signaling, resulting in potent inhibition of angiogenesis without inducing cytotoxicity. Notably, one of these new derivatives significantly suppressed tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model.         컴퓨터기반 영어 읽기 시험에 대한 수험생 인식

        This study explored how test-takers perceive computer-based test (CBT) features in a CBT reading test. This study collected research data from 5,391 high school students who took National English Ability Test (NEAT). This study employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods; meaning that the research data includes students’ survey responses as well as interviews with 27 students among them. First, a survey was conducted to find out the perceptions on the usefulness of the CBT features in the reading test. The survey data was statistically analyzed in terms of gender, region, test levels (Level 2 & Level 3), and grade. Second, the semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect more in-depth data on how the CBT features affect students’ performance in the reading test. The findings from these triangulated data suggest that the students had positive responses to the usefulness of most of the features in the CBT reading test. However, the findings also suggest that some CBT features need to be revised to attain the level of flexibility that is provided by a paper-based reading test. The findings are discussed and implications for pedagogy are suggested.
