Providing End-of-Life Care in the Community: What Are the Challenges in Malaysia?
Yoke Yeng Leong,Ednin Hamzah,Sylvia McCarthy,Zee Nee Lim 한국호스피스완화의료학회 2022 한국호스피스.완화의료학회지 Vol.25 No.3
A 72-year-old woman with metastatic lung cancer to bone and brain and with left external iliac vein thrombosis was under the care of a community palliative care provider. She experienced an acute pain crisis due to acute limb ischemia of the left lower limb. Goals-ofcare discussions were held with the patient and her family; she prioritized symptom control and end-of-life care at home. The family and patient were aware of her short prognosis. Her complex pain was managed by the community palliative team, and her family was empowered to give subcutaneous injections. We illustrate a case showing the importance of community health services with palliative care support in providing symptom management and support to patient and family caregivers throughout the course of a life-limiting illness. It also highlights family caregivers’ potential psychological distress in delivering subcutaneous injections in terminal care for a patient at home.
Endogenous Structural Breaks and Real Exchange Rate Stationarity in Asia: Empirics and Theory
Yoke-Kee Eng,Chin-Yoong Wong,Muzafar Shah Habibullah 한국무역학회 2012 Journal of Korea trade Vol.16 No.3
This paper reconsiders real exchange rate stationarity for six East Asian countries using Lee and Strazicich (2001, 2003)’s minimum Lagrangian Multiplier (LM) unit root test that accounts for two endogenously determined structural breaks. The result is mixed. We thus set up an open-economy New Keynesian model to understand the factors that cause trend breaks and to infer the mechanism that characterizes the nonstationary real exchange rates. We find that nominal depreciation rate, inflation differentials, and interest rate differentials are the sources of breaks. The strength of each source in changing the path of the real exchange rate is influenced by nominal rigidities and monetary policy reaction functions. Most interestingly, we show how a successfully implemented inflation-targeting monetary policy in conjunction with an endogenous currency risk premium can be the potential culprit that results in nonstationary real exchange rates.

Background: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the eighth most common cancer as estimated from worldwide data. The incidence of HNC in Peninsular Malaysia was reported as 8.5 per 100,000 population. This study was aimed to determine the treatment outcomes for HNC patients treated in the Oncology Unit of University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). Materials and Methods: All newly diagnosed patients with squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (HNSCC) referred for treatment to the Oncology Unit at UMMC from 2003-2010 were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment outcomes were 5-year overall survival (OS), cause specific survival (CSS), loco-regional control (LRC) and radiotherapy (RT) related side effects. Kaplan-Meier and log rank analyses were used to determine survival outcomes, stratified according to American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage. Results: A total of 130 cases were analysed. Most cases (81.5%) were at late stage (AJCC III-IVB) at presentation. The 5-year OS for the whole study population was 34.4% with a median follow up of 24 months. The 5-year OS according to AJCC stage was 100%, 48.2%, 41.4% and 22.0% for stage I, II, III and IVA-B, respectively. The 5-year overall CSS and LCR were 45.4% and 55.4%, respectively. Late effects of RT were documented in 41.4% of patients. The most common late effect was xerostomia. Conclusions: The treatment outcome of HNSCC at our centre is lagging behind those of developed nations. Efforts to increase the number of patients presenting in earlier stages, increase in the use of combined modality treatment, especially concurrent chemoradiotherapy and implementation of intensity modulated radiotherapy, may lead to better outcomes for our HNC patients.
FOREX Web-Based Trading Platform with E-Learning Features
Yong, Yoke Leng,Lieu, Shang Qin,Ngo, David,Lee, Yunli Korea Multimedia Society 2017 The journal of multimedia information system Vol.4 No.4
There has been an influx of traders and researchers eager to gain a better understanding of the market due to the rapid growth of the FOREX market. Traders with varying degree of experience are also often inundated with information, analysis methods as well as trading rules when making a trading decision on buying/selling a currency exchange pair. Thus, this paper reviews the current computational tools and analysis methods used within the FOREX trading community and proposes the development of a web-based trading platform with e-learning features to support beginners. Novice traders could also benefit from the use of the proposed e-learning trading platform as it helps them gain valuable knowledge and navigate the FOREX market in real-time. Even experienced traders would find it useful as the platform could be used for actual trading and acts as a reference point to understand the reasoning behind the certain technical analysis implementation that are still unclear to them.
The Effects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Brand Image in the Malaysian Hotel Industry
Loh Yoke Fai,Song, Hyoung Ju(송형주),Kang, Kyung Ho(강경호) 한국서비스경영학회 2017 서비스경영학회지 Vol.18 No.2
Among the hospitality industry in Malaysia, the hotel industry is particularly regarded as a promising sector for boosting the national economy. As an increasing number of hotels are under development for the coming years, brand image will serve an essential role for the Malaysian hotels in achieving competitive advantage after the rapid growth. As corporate social responsibility (CSR) is regarded as a crucial factor in enhancing the firm"s brand image, the current study examines the effect of CSR on brand image of the Malaysian hotels. Further, in order to investigate the relationship between CSR and brand image more comprehensively, the current study employs brand origin (i.e., local five-star hotels and international five-star hotels) as a moderating variable. Findings of the study are discussed with theoretical contribution to the literature related to CSR and brand image, as well as practical implications to hotels managers when practicing CSR initiatives.
