Online Ensemble Topology Selection in Expensive Optimization Problems
Yoel Tenne 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2020 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.18 No.4
Simulation-driven optimization problems are often computationally-expensive, an aspect which has motivated the use of metamodels as they provide approximate function values more economically. To further improve the prediction accuracy the use of ensembles has been explored in which predictions from multiple metamodels are combined. However, the optimal ensemble topology, namely, which types of metamodels it includes, is typically not known, while using a fixed topology may degrade the prediction accuracy and search effectiveness. To address this issue this paper proposes a metamodel-assisted algorithm which autonomously adapts the ensemble topology online during the search such that an optimal topology is used throughout. An extensive performance analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and approach.
Israeli Journalists & Religious Identity
Yoel Cohen 한국언론학회 2016 Asian Communication Research Vol.13 No.2
Journalists play an important role in the construction of the image of religion in the media. In Israel the secular-religious divide has resulted in the media being seen as contributing to the perceived negative image which religious communities, in particular the Haredi ultra-Orthodox, enjoy. This paper seeks to throw light upon Israeli journalists’ religious beliefs and observance of religious customs. Given that journalists’ work values emphasise freedom of the media and the right to know it is instructive to throw light on how journalists negotiate their religiousity. This is important in understanding how religion is covered in Israel. Does a perceived anti-religious bias in the Israeli media reflect the religious identity of Israeli journalists–or not? But a poll by this author of 260 Israeli journalists about Jewish religious identity while confirming that Israeli journalists favor the separation of synagogue and state found there was little or no difference between the positions of Israeli Jewish journalists and that of the broader Israeli Jewish population on existential questions like belief in God. Nor were there any significant differences regarding religious activity like observance of religious holidays or Jewish life cycle events between the journalistic community and the rest of the Israeli Jewish population.

Modern engineering design optimization uses computer simulation s and as such it requires optimizing expensive black-box functions. To efficiently handle such challenging optimization problems we have proposed an algorithm which uses several approaches such as global-local search, modelling and model selection and an efficient trust-region search. Performance analysis with both mathematical test functions and a real-world application show the proposed algorithm outperforms a reference algorithm representative of many existing algorithms.
A change point estimator in monitoring the parameters of a multivariate IMA(1, 1) model
Sun Yoel Sohn,Gyo Young Cho 한국데이터정보과학회 2015 한국데이터정보과학회지 Vol.26 No.2
Modern production process is a very complex structure combined observations which are correlated with several factors. When the error signal occurs in the process, it is very difficult to know the root causes of an out-of-control signal because of insufficient information. However, if we know the time of the change, the system can be controlled more easily. To know it, we derive a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of thechange point in a process when observations are from a multivariate IMA(1,1) processby monitoring residual vectors of the model. In this paper, numerical results show that the MLE of change point is effective in detecting changes in a process.

Background/Aims: Self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) are a safe and efficacious method for palliating malignant gastric outlet obstruction. But few reports assess clinical outcome after SEMS insertion for malignant gastric outlet obstruction caused by stomach cancer only. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of uncovered SEMS in patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction caused by stomach cancer only. Methods: We report our experience of 62 patients with gastric outlet obstruction caused by stomach cancer treated by implantation of uncovered SEMS. 62 patients (43 male, 19 female) were treated between August, 2000 and March, 2007. A scoring system was used to grade the ability to eat. Results: Stent implantation was successful in 61 (98.4%) patients. Relief of obstructive symptoms was achieved in 49 (80.3%) patients. Mean survival duration was 143 days. Mean stent patency time was 103.5 days. The improvement in ability to eat using the scoring system was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Endoscopic placement of uncovered SEMS is a safe and effective treatment for the palliation of patients with inoperable malignant gastric outlet obstruction caused by stomach cancer.
