        Anatomical Study of the Accessory Tendon of the Extensor Hallucis Longus Muscle and Its Clinical Application

        Background: The accessory tendon of the extensor hallucis longus (ATEHL) muscle is a common abnormal structure, and its clinical significance remains debatable. In this study, we provide the incidence of the ATEHL and characterize its morphological types in Asian cadavers and investigate its clinical applications. Methods: The tendons from 50 adult cadaveric feet, fixed in 10% formalin, were analyzed. We measured the length and width of both the ATEHL and the extensor hallucis brevis (EHB). Results: All dissected specimens had an ATEHL. The first metatarsophalangeal joint was surrounded by an accessory tendon that inserted onto the joint capsule and the dorsal base of the proximal phalanx. We classified the ATEHL into 3 types based on their directions. Differences in ATEHL type based on sex were not statistically significant. Conclusions: We found an ATEHL in all cadaveric specimens in this study. We surmise that the ATEHL acts as an antagonist with the EHB when the toe is extending, which might help prevent the occurrence of hallux valgus deformity.

        A native Trichoderma harzianum strain Th62 displays antagonistic activities against phytopathogenic fungi and promotes the growth of Celosia cristata

        Trichoderma spp. are widely applied, eco-friendly mycofungicides and plant growth promoters. Native Trichoderma strainsare likely to have more productive, stable biocontrol and biofertilizer activities since they are well adapted to the local environment. In this study, we isolated a native Trichoderma strain ‘Th62’ from the rhizosphere soil of wild Chelidonium majusplants in Harbin, China (126.6341°E, 45.7242°N). The isolated Trichoderma strain was identifi ed as a T. harzianum strainvia morphological observation and molecular methods based on the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and elongationfactor-1α gene sequences. Signifi cant antagonistic activities of Th62 against fi ve soil-borne fungal phytopathogens,Fusarium oxysporum , Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , Alternaria alternata , Cytospora chrysosperma, and Rhizoctonia solani ,were confi rmed by dual-culture assays. Furthermore, the crude fermentation products of Th62 also displayed antifungalactivities against these fi ve pathogens. To evaluate the function of Th62 as a biofertilizer, we subsequently applied Th62on cockscomb ( Celosia cristata L), a plant species with both ornamental and medicinal values, by inoculation with Th62conidia at diff erent concentrations, 1 × 10 10 cfu mL −1 , 1 × 10 11 cfu mL −1 , and 1 × 10 12 cfu mL −1 . The benefi cial eff ects ofTh62 were evaluated by measuring the growth and photosynthetic traits of the inoculated cockscomb plants, and the resultsdemonstrated that Th62 signifi cantly improved the photosynthetic effi ciency, photosynthetic capacity, and the adaptabilityto intense light of the inoculated cockscomb plants compared to the controls. Consistently, Th62 inoculation signifi cantlyimproved the growth and fl ower yield of cockscomb. We presented a positive case of isolating and applying native microbialresources on local plantation practices.

        A study on the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port to Improve Korea-China Logistics Efficiency

        한중 간 무역 및 물류발전에 따라 중국 저장성 일대 항만의 중요성 또한 증가하고 있다. 중국의 닝보-저우산항은 중국에서 가장 활발한 경제활동이 이루어지는 지역인 양쯔강 하역에 위치한 지리적 특성을 지니고 있으나, 항만의 경제적 발전은 이에 미치지 못하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 인식 하에 닝보-저우산 항의 현황을 파악하고, 향후 그 발전 전략을 제시하고자 하였다. 닝보-저우산항에 대한 선행연구 등을 근거로 항만물류 발전을 위한 요인들을 추출하여, 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 항만을 포함한 인근 지역의 물류 효율화를 극대화하기 위하여 항만 배후단지를 활용하는 전략이 필요하다는 것. 둘째, 내륙지역 경제 및 물류 통합 협력 강화를 통해 항만의 영향력을 확장하는 전략이 필요하다는 것, 셋째, 항만 배후 지역의 특성을 고려, 인근 항만과의 통합방안을 추구하여 내륙경제와 교류를 활성화시킬 수 있어야 한다는 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, located very close to the Yangtze River Delta, the most dynamic economic region in China, has a unique geographical advantage, but its economic development is very uncoordinated, however. In spite of it’s good and deep-water environments, the development speed is relatively backward due to the several reasons. In this paper, we analyze the current logistics situation of the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan and the conditions for its development. We can identify the key factors using AHP analysis and suggest some strategies for the development of the port logistics by SWOT analysis. The regional logistics centering on Ningbo- Zhoushan port should be carried out first, and the efficiency of regional logistics should be maximized to improve the network and the function of logistics points of branch ports. It is necessary to integrate port, to accelerate the construction of hinterland cities and port logistics core areas, to gather resources from all over the country, and to expand the brand influence of the port. Logistics cooperation and strengthen exchanges with inland economic areas, expanding the ports influence to the inland and building a sustainable port system is also needed.

        Patient and Care Delays of Breast Cancer in China

        Purpose This study differentiates patient and care delays of breast cancer and explores the related factors as well as the associations with the prognosis in Guangzhou, a southern city of China. Materials and Methods A cohort of female incident breast cancer patients (n=1,551) was recruited from October 2008 to March 2012 and followed up until January 1, 2016 (n=1,374) in the affiliated hospitals of Sun Yat-sen University. The factors associated with patient and care delays were analyzed with multivariable logistic models. Cox proportional hazards regression models were constructed to estimate the impacts of the delays on the prognosis. Results There were 40.4% patient delay (! 3 months) and 15.5% care delay (! 1 month). The patient delay, but not the care delay, was significantly related to the clinical stage and consequently worsened the prognosis of breast cancer (hazard ratio, 1.45; 95% confidence interval, 1.09 to 1.91 for progression-free survival). The factors related to an increased patient delay included premenopausal status, history of benign breast disease, and less physical examination. Conclusion Patient delay was the main type of delay in Guangzhou and resulted in higher clinical stage and poor prognosis of breast cancer. Screening for breast cancer among premenopausal women may be an effective way to reduce this delay.

        Whitening and inhibiting NF- B-mediated infl ammation properties of the biotransformed green ginseng berry of new cultivar K1, ginsenoside Rg2 enriched, on B16 and LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells

        Background: Main bioactive constituents and pharmacological functions of ripened red ginseng berry(Panax ginseng Meyer) have been frequently reported. Yet, the research gap targeting the beneficial activitiesof transformed green ginseng berries has not reported elsewhere. Methods: Ginsenosides of new green berry cultivar K-1 (GK-1) were identified by HPLC-QTOF/MS. Ginsenosidesbioconversion in GK-1 by bgp1 enzyme was confirmed with HPLC and TLC. Then, mechanismsof GK-1 and b-glucosidase (bgp1) biotransformed GK-1 (BGK-1) were determined by QuantitativeReverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction and Western blot. Results: GK-1 possesses highest ginsenosides especially ginsenoside-Re amongst seven ginseng cultivarsincluding (Chunpoong, Huangsuk, Kumpoong, K-1, Honkaejong, Gopoong, and Yunpoong). Ginseng root’sbiomass is not affected with the harvest of GK-1 at 3 weeks after flowering period. Then, Re is bioconvertedinto a promising pharmaceutical effect of Rg2 via bgp1. According to the results of cell assays,BGK-1 shows decrease of tyrosinase and melanin content in a-melanocyte-stimulating hormonechallenged-murine melanoma B16 cells. BGK-1 which is comparatively more effective than GK-1 extractshows significant suppression of the nuclear factor (NF)-kB activation and inflammatory target genes, inLPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Conclusion: These results reported effective whitening and anti-inflammatory of BGK-1 as compared toGK-1.

        한·중 공포소구 유형에 따른 담배 패키지디자인 경고이미지에 관한 연구

        본 연구는 공포소구의 개념 및 유형을 재정리하였으며 이를 바탕으로 담배 패키지디자인 경고이미지의 유형을제시하였다. 한·중 담배패키지 경고이미지 활용 현황 및 차이점을 분석하기 위해 구체적 한·중 사례 84개를 연구대상으로 유형, 요소, 표현기법 등을 분석하였다. 결론적으로 유형별로는 한·중 모두 개인피해형 경고이미지를 가장 많이 활용하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, 광고 자극 범위 측면에서 면적을 크게 활용하고 주목성이 높은위치에 제시하고 다양한 표현기법을 응용하는 경고이미지를 투입하는 필요성을 보인다. 광고 자극 주기 측면에서 다양한 내용으로 제시하고 수량이 많고 정기적으로 개정하는 경고이미지를 투입하는 필요성이 대두되고있다. 본 연구의 한계점과 향후연구 제언을 바탕으로 담배 패키지디자인 경고이미지에 대한 다양한 후속 연구들이 진행되어 효과적으로 금연을 위한 정책을 제공할 수 있는 광고를 집행하는데 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다. This study rearranged the concept and type of fear appeal, and suggested the type of warning image of cigarette package design. In order to analyze the current status and differences in the use of cigarette package warning images in Korea and China, 84 specific cases were analyzed for types, elements, and expression techniques. In conclusion, by type, it was confirmed that both Korea and China used the most personal damage warning images. In addition, in terms of the advertising stimulus range, it is necessary to use the area of the warning image to a large extent, present it in a highly noticeable position, and insert a warning image that applies various expression techniques. In terms of the advertising stimulation cycle, the need to present a variety of contents and to input warning images that are regularly revised with a large number is emerging. Based on the limitations of this study and the suggestions for future research, it is hoped that warning images can contribute to the execution of advertisements that can effectively provide a policy for smoking cessation.

        The WNT/Ca2+ pathway promotes atrial natriuretic peptide secretion by activating protein kinase C/transforming growth factor-β activated kinase 1/activating transcription factor 2 signaling in isolated beating rat atria

        WNT signaling plays an important role in cardiac development, but abnormal activity is often associated with cardiac hypertrophy, myocardial infarction, remodeling, and heart failure. The effect of WNT signaling on regulation of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) secretion is unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Wnt agonist 1 (Wnta1) on ANP secretion and mechanical dynamics in beating rat atria. Wnta1 treatment significantly increased atrial ANP secretion and pulse pressure; these effects were blocked by U73122, an antagonist of phospholipase C. U73122 also abolished the effects of Wnta1-mediated upregulation of protein kinase C (PKC) β and γ expression, and the PKC antagonist Go 6983 eliminated Wnta1-induced secretion of ANP. In addition, Wnta1 upregulated levels of phospho-transforming growth factor-β activated kinase 1 (p-TAK1), TAK1 banding 1 (TAB1) and phospho-activating transcription factor 2 (p-ATF2); these effects were blocked by both U73122 and Go 6983. Wnta1-induced ATF2 was abrogated by inhibition of TAK1. Furthermore, Wnta1 upregulated the expression of T cell factor (TCF) 3, TCF4, and lymphoid enhancer factor 1 (LEF1), and these effects were blocked by U73122 and Go 6983. Tak1 inhibition abolished the Wnta1-induced expression of TCF3, TCF4, and LEF1 and Wnta1-mediated ANP secretion and changes in mechanical dynamics. These results suggest that Wnta1 increased the secretion of ANP and mechanical dynamics in beating rat atria by activation of PKC–TAK1–ATF2–TCF3/LEF1 and TCF4/LEF1 signaling mainly via the WNT/Ca2+ pathway. It is also suggested that WNT–ANP signaling is implicated in cardiac physiology and pathophysiology.

      • Lack of Association Between Interleukin-8-251 T>A Polymorphism and Colorectal Cancer Risk: a Meta-analysis based on 3,019 Cases and 3,984 Controls

        Purpose: The results of recent published studies focusing on IL-8 polymorphism in colorectal cancer susceptibility have often been inconsistent. We therefore carried out a meta-analysis based on independent studies to assess the association. Methods: Nine case-control studies with 7,003 individuals (3,019 cases and 3,984 controls) were included in this meta-analysis through searching the databases of PubMed, Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM; Chinese) (up to Aug 1st, 2012). The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were used to assess the strength of the association. Meta-analysis was conducted in a fixed/random effect model. Results: No obvious associations were found for all genetic models when all studies were pooled into the meta-analysis (for A vs. T: OR = 1.084, 95% CI = 0.971-1.209, P = 0.019; for TA vs. TT: OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 0.943-1.475, P = 0.001; for AA vs. TT: OR = 1.155, 95% CI = 0.916-1.456, P = 0.014; for AA+TA vs. TT: OR = 1.170, 95% CI =0.953-1.437, P = 0.001; for AA vs. TT+TA: OR = 1.044, 95% CI = 0.886-1.230, P = 0.097). In the subgroup analyses by ethnicity (Caucasian) and source of controls (population based), also no significant associations were found for all genetic models. Conclusions: Result suggests that the IL-8-251T>A polymorphism is not associated with colorectal cancer risk. Because of the limitations of this meta-analysis, this finding demands further investigation.
