        Low Specific On-resistance SOI LDMOS Device with P<sup>+</sup>P-top Layer in the Drift Region

        In this paper, a novel low specific on-resistance SOI LDMOS Device with P+P-top layer in the drift region is proposed and investigated using a two dimensional device simulator, MEDICI. The structure is characterized by a heavily-doped $P^+$ region which is connected to the P-top layer in the drift region. The $P^+$ region can modulates the surface electric field profile, increases the drift doping concentration and reduces the sensitivity of the breakdown voltage on the geometry parameters. Compared to the conventional D-RESURF device, a 25.8% decrease in specific on-resistance and a 48.2% increase in figure of merit can be obtained in the novel device. Furthermore, the novel $P^+P$-top device also present cost efficiency due to the fact that the $P^+$ region can be fabricated together with the P-type body contact region without any additional mask.

        Involvement of Alternative Oxidase in the Regulation of Sensitivity of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum to the Fungicides Azoxystrobin and Procymidone

        Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a filamentous fungal pathogen that can infect many economically important crops and vegetables. Alternative oxidase is the terminal oxidase of the alternative respiratory pathway in fungal mitochondria. The function of alternative oxidase was investigated in the regulation of sensitivity of S. sclerotiorum to two commercial fungicides, azoxystrobin and procymidone which have different fungitoxic mechanisms. Two isolates of S. sclerotiorum were sensitive to both fungicides. Application of salicylhydroxamic acid, a specific inhibitor of alternative oxidase, significantly increased the values of effective concentration causing 50% mycelial growth inhibition (EC50) of azoxystrobin to both S. sclerotiorum isolates, whereas notably decreased the EC50 values of procymidone. In mycelial respiration assay azoxystrobin displayed immediate inhibitory effect on cytochrome pathway capacity, but had no immediate effect on alternative pathway capacity. In contrast, procymidone showed no immediate impact on capacities of both cytochrome and alternative pathways in the mycelia. However, alternative oxidase encoding gene (aox) transcript and protein levels, alternative respiration pathway capacity of the mycelia were obviously increased by pre-treatment for 24 h with both azoxystrobin and procymidone. These results indicate that alternative oxidase was involved in the regulation of sensitivity of S. sclerotiorum to the fungicides azoxystrobin and procymidone, and that both fungicides could affect aox gene expression and the alternative respiration pathway capacity development in mycelia of this fungal pathogen.

        Evaluating the effects of programs for reducing achievement gaps: a case study in Taiwan

        Considering that achievement gaps have become a serious educational problem worldwide, the Ministry of Education in Taiwan has been addressing a series of policies to reduce achievement gaps, but the effect of these policies has not yet been carefully examined. Therefore, the present study investigated current educational policies, achievement gap phenomenon, and its changing trends in the use of national standardized tests in Taiwan and evaluated the degree to which these policies are reducing the achievement gaps among Taiwanese students. Junior high school graduates who took the high school entrance examination between 2004 and 2010 were recruited to examine the associations between their academic achievements and variables such as socioeconomic status (SES), ethnicity, and school district. Time series analyses were conducted to determine the longitudinal trends for the achievement gaps. The results revealed that achievement gaps are decreasing among different ethnicities, but they are increasing among different SESs and school districts. These findings demonstrate some positive effects of the educational policies introduced in Taiwan, but also the need for further modification and precise implementation of these policies. Suggestions for implementing educational programs and policies to reduce achievement gaps are also presented.

      • Case-Control Study of Diet in Patients with Cervical Cancer or Precancerosis in Wufeng, a High Incidence Region in China

        Purpose: To investigate the diet of patients with cervical cancer and precancerosis in the Wufeng area, a high-incidence region in China. Methods: In the case group, 104 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINII/III) were recruited from the Wufeng area. Nine hundred thirty-six healthy women were selected from the same area as the matched controls. A questionnaire, which included questions about general lifestyle conditions, smoking and alcohol status, source of drinking water, green tea intake, and diet in the past year, was presented to all participants. Results: Green tea intake (P=0.022, OR=0.551, 95% CI=0.330-0.919) and vegetable intake (P=0.035, OR=0.896, 95% CI=0.809-0.993) were identified as protective factors against cervical cancer or CINII/III. There was no indication of any associations of other lifestyle factors (smoking status, alcohol status, source of drinking water) or diet (intake of fruit, meat/egg/milk, soybean food, onion/garlic, staple food and pickled food) with cervical cancer. Conclusions: The results suggest that eating more fresh vegetables and drinking more green tea may help to reduce the risk of cervical cancer or CINII/III in people of the Wufeng area.

      • Intravenous Flurbiprofen Axetil Enhances Analgesic Effect of Opioids in Patients with Refractory Cancer Pain by Increasing Plasma β-Endorphin

        Background: The study aimed to investigate the analgesic effect of a combination of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil and opioids, and evaluate the relationship between refractory pain relief and plasma ${\beta}$-endorphin levels in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 cancer patients was randomly divided into two groups, 60 patients took orally morphine sulfate sustained-release tablets in group A, and another 60 patients receiving the combination treatment of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil and opioid drugs in group B. After 7 days, pain relief, quality of life improvement and side effects were evaluated. Furthermore, plasma ${\beta}$-endorphin levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: With the combination treatment of intravenous intravenous flurbiprofen axetil and opioids, the total effective rate of pain relief rose to 91.4%, as compared to 82.1% when morphine sulfate sustained-release tablet was used alone. Compared with that of group A, the analgesic effect increased in group B (p=0.031). Moreover, satisfactory pain relief was associated with a significant increase in plasma ${\beta}$-endorphin levels. After the treatment, plasma ${\beta}$-endorphin level in group B was $62.4{\pm}13.5pg/ml$, which was higher than that in group A ($45.8{\pm}11.2pg/ml$) (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results suggest the combination of intravenous flurbiprofen axetil and opioids can enhance the analgesic effect of opioid drugs by increasing plasma ${\beta}$-endorphin levels, which would offer a selected and reliable strategy for refractory cancer pain treatment.

      • Study on Mobile Terminal Distribution Act : Effects of Subsidy Regulations

        This paper analyzes the effect of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation, which are the main regulation adopted in “Law on the Improvement of the Mobile Terminal Distribution System” (Mobile Terminal Distribution Act), on the social surplus, the consumer surplus and profits of telecommunications carriers. We focus our analysis on whether the service charge competition is stimulated enough so that it can compensate for the loss of subsidies. Number Portability subsidy, especially, undermines the rival’s market power and thus reduces the service charge. On the other hand, the regulations will also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers. However, social surplus is maximized when both of the regulations are present because the regulations reduces the frequency of switching handsets inefficiently. In enacting the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act, the telecommunications regulatory agency asserted that the regulation on subsidies will stimulate service charge competition, and in the long run, enhance the consumer surplus. However, contrary to the regulatory agency’s assertion, subsidy regulation, especially the regulation on Number Portability subsidy, reduces consumer surplus. On the other hand, the Mobile Terminal Distribution Act can also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers because it decreases competition among the telecommunications carriers.

        단말기 유통법에 관한 연구: 보조금 규제의 영향

        Purpose – This paper analyzes the effect of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation, which are the main regulation adopted in “Law on the Improvement of the Mobile Terminal Distribution System” (Mobile Terminal Distribution Act), on the social surplus, the consumer surplus and profits of telecommunications carriers. We focus our analysis on whether the service charge competition is stimulated enough so that it can compensate for the loss of subsidies. Research design, data, and methodology – We use simple economic model to assess the impact of the handset subsidy and the Mobile Number Portability subscriber subsidy regulation. Unlike the former researches on this topic, we depart from using Hotelling model, and instead use the switching cost model, which uses switching cost as a parameter of market powers of telecommunications carriers. We also study the effect of the two different regulations when they are adopted both independently and concurrently. Results – If the market powers of telecommunications carriers are over certain threshold, contrary to the regulatory agency’s assertion, the service charge competition would not be stimulated enough to compensate for the deduction in the subsidies, and thus the consumer surplus is compromised. Number Portability subsidy, especially, undermines the rival’s market power and thus reduces the service charge. On the other hand, the regulations will also increase the profits of telecommunications carriers. However, social surplus is maximized when both of the regulations are present because the regulations reduces the frequency of switching handsets inefficiently.         2011년 10월 15일 중국공산당 제17기 중앙위원회 제6차 전체 회의에서 21세기 중국의 새로운 국가 비전으로 사회주의 문화강국을 지향했다. 문화체재개혁을 심화하고 사회주의 문화 대 발전을 이루기 위해서 문화산업을 국민경제 지주 산업으로 육성하고, 개혁개방을 강조하고 문화번영발전에 유리한 시스템을 신속히 구축하겠다고 천명했다. 중국 정부는 문화정책의 체재개혁 심화를 통해서 실질적인 문화산업을 육성하고 발전시키고 이를 통해 문화생산력의 해방과 발전을 도모하고, 황해문화를 건설하겠다는 이념으로 변화하였다. 이러한 중국 문화산업정책의 변화와 그 영향은 한국정부는 물론 중국진출 기업들은 반드시 검토해야 할 내용이다. 본 고는 중국 문화산업의 전반적인 현황과 문제점이 무엇인지 조감해보고, 이를 통해 한국이 추구해야 할 문화산업의 방향성을 가늠해보고자 한다. China, the plenary session of the 17th central committee in the communist party, on 15th october 2011, has aimed “a cultural powerhouse of the socialist state” for their new vision. They clarify their standpoint by “reform and opening-up” that developing reform of cultutal system and fostering cultural industry for national economy, leading a huge jump of the socialism culture. Also, the advantageous system for the cultural development would be established swiftly. The chinese government has been changed to make progress for liberation and development of the cultural productivity by deepening cultural reform and fostering substantive cultural industry. China wants to build a new “Yellow-sea Culture”. Korean government and the Korean enterprises in China should consider this transition of the cultural industry policy of China and its influence. This study would overlook whole state and problem of cultural industry in China and then estimate a direction of cultural industry which Korea should pursue.

        Experimental Investigation of the Behavior of Collapsible Loess Treated with the Acid-addition Pre-soaking Method

        The pre-soaking method is widely used to address loess collapsibility. However, this method requires a long construction time and has a limited application range. To foster the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of the pre-soaking method regarding ease of use, acid-addition collapsibility tests and acid-addition shear tests were performed to investigate the effect of combining the pre-soaking method with the use of an acetic acid solution. This approach is based on the principle that acid can dissolve cemented connections, which is the main factor of loess collapsibility, in a short period of time. Moreover, a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was used to observe the features of loess samples before and after these tests. The SEM images also confirm our inferred conclusions. The experimental results showed that, compared with the conventional pre-soaking method, the addition of acetic acid sharply decreases the loess collapsibility under low pressure condition and reduces the construction time. In addition, the proposed approach simultaneously increases the strength of modified soil under low pressure conditions. Further, the addition of acetic acid allows the pre-soaking method to be applied to a non-self-weight collapsible loess, to which the conventional pre-soaking method cannot be applied.
