Solute Distribution Ahead of Interface during Heteroepitaxial Growth
Yao, Wen Jing,Jin, Zeng Jia,Wang, Nan,Lee, Jeh Yun Trans Tech Publications 2013 Advanced materials research Vol.690 No.-
<P>By establishing a diffusion model, the solute distribution is investigated during the growth of eutectic phase from the binary melt on the primary phase. Based on the eutectic reaction conditions, reasonable assumptions are carried out to build the partial differential equation. After the determination of the initial and boundary conditions, the analytical solutions have been derived from the method of variables separation. The solute distribution ahead of interface and the influence of this distribution on the growth rate of heteroepitaxial phase are discussed.</P>
Influence of Rear Earth Yb on the Specific Heat of Liquid Fe-Co-Yb Alloy
Yao, Wen Jing,Wang, Nan,Lee, Jeh Yun Trans Tech Publications 2013 Advanced materials research Vol.690 No.-
<P>By Monte Carlo method with EAM potentials, the specific heat of liquid Co50Fe50 and Co48Fe48Th4 alloys at different temperatures are obtained. The effect of Th on the thermophysical parameters is examined. Over the temperature range from 1400 to 2000 K, the specific heat decreases from to Jmol-1K-1 after Th was added. It is the addition of Th element which has bigger atomic radius, larger atomic mass, and complex arrangement of extranuclear electron, leads to the reduced specific heat.</P>
Tests of reinforced concrete deep beams
Wen-Yao Lu,Hsin-Tai Hsiao,Chun-Liang Chen,Shu-Min Huang,Ming-Che Lin 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2015 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.15 No.3
This study reports the test results of twelve reinforced concrete deep beams. The deep beams were tested with loads applied through and supported by columns. The main variables studied were the shear span-to-depth ratios, and the horizontal and vertical stirrups. The shear strengths can be effectively enhanced for deep beams reinforced with both horizontal and vertical stirrups. The test results indicate the shear strengths of deep beams increase with the decrease of the shear span-to-depth ratios. The normalized shear strengths of the deep beams did not increase proportionally with an increase in effective depth. An analytical method for predicting the shear strengths of deep beams is proposed in this study. The shear strengths predicted by the proposed method and the strut-and-tie model of the ACI Code are compared with available test results. The comparison shows the proposed method can predict the shear strengths of reinforced concrete deep beams more accurately than the strut-and-tie model of the ACI Code.
A novel role of dipeptidyl peptidase 9 in epidermal growth factor signaling.
Yao, Tsun-Wen,Kim, Woo-Shin,Yu, Denise M T,Sharbeen, George,McCaughan, Geoffrey W,Choi, Kang-Yell,Xia, Pu,Gorrell, Mark D American Association for Cancer Research 2011 Molecular cancer research Vol.9 No.7
<P>Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4), DPP8, DPP9, and fibroblast activation protein (FAP), the four proteases of the DPP4 gene family, have unique peptidase and extra-enzymatic activities that have been implicated in various diseases including cancers. We report here a novel role of DPP9 in regulating cell survival and proliferation through modulating molecular signaling cascades. Akt (protein kinase B) activation was significantly inhibited by human DPP9 overexpression in human hepatoma cells (HepG2 and Huh7) and human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T), whereas extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) activity was unaffected, revealing a pathway-specific effect. Interestingly, the inhibitory effect of DPP9 on Akt pathway activation was growth factor dependent. DPP9 overexpression caused apoptosis and significantly less epidermal growth factor (EGF)-mediated Akt activation in HepG2 cells. However, such inhibitory effect was not observed in cells stimulated with other growth factors, including connective tissue growth factor, hepatic growth factor, insulin or platelet-derived growth factor-BB. The effect of DPP9 on Akt did not occur when DPP9 enzyme activity was ablated by either mutagenesis or inhibition. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway is a major downstream effector of Ras. We found that DPP9 and DPP8, but not DPP4 or FAP, associate with H-Ras, a key signal molecule of the EGF receptor signaling pathway. These findings suggest an important signaling role of DPP9 in the regulation of survival and proliferation pathways.</P>

China’s party diplomacy—the Communist Party of China’s own international outreach—has become an important component of China’s foreign relations. Given Southeast Asia’s strategic importance, the Communist Party of China (CPC) has been proactively engaging political elites in the region. What are the immediate changes party diplomacy brings about for Southeast Asian actors, and how do they translate into long-term consequences? I propose a threepronged framework to explore the local effects of China’s party diplomacy, respectively, concerning exposure to ideas, the pursuit of interests, and the emergence of controversies. Drawing on a novel dataset and using illustrative cases of Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, and Malaysia, I show how the effects are contingent on the agency of Southeast Asian actors and domestic dynamics in each country. From the standpoint of Southeast Asian elites, engagement with the CPC could bring about ideational and material benefits, while domestic pushback, if any, is easy to deflect and tends to fade away over time. China’s party diplomacy is best described as a moderate status quo multiplier that leads to noticeable changes without triggering structural shifts.

<P>Under near-equilibrium solidification conditions, the Co-17.8 wt%Gd eutectic alloy forms rod-like eutectic microstructure of (αCo) solid solution and Co17Gd2 compound. When the solidification condition is far from the equilibrium, the rapid growth of nano-eutectic in Co-17.8 wt%Gd alloy ribbons is realized by the single-roller techniques. The average granular size (d) of nano-eutectic in the center of ribbons varies with the increase of wheel speed (V), d = 510.36-25.51 V+0.44 V2. XRD results of ribbons at different wheel speeds indicate that, with the rise of wheel speed, the main peak of Co17Gd2 compound becomes more and more notable, whereas the main peak of (αCo) solid solution tends to reduce. Along the length direction, the Co-17.8 wt%Gd alloy ribbons have the negative magnetostrictive strain. The magnetostrictive strain enhances with the increase of wheel speed. At the wheel speed of 40 m/s, the magnetostrictive coefficient of ribbons is measured to be - 733 ppm at the magnetic field of 6 kOe. The influence of the wheel speed and the magnetic field on the maanetostrictive coefficient is discussed.</P>
Storage strategies for containers in container yards

Container storage problem is a critical issue for the efficient operation of container terminal. The storage yard in the study is horizontal layout, in which one quay crane is served by several yard cranes and one vessel is served by several blocks during vessel operation. This study addresses various storage strategies for horizontal container lay yard layout. The storage strategies include the strategy for selecting blocks, reserving spaces for a group of containers in advance, and selecting yard stacks. The proposed strategies are tested by a simulation study.
