A Different Perspective on Macroscopic Sampling of Cholecystectomy Specimens
Asuman Argon,Ayşe Yağcı,Funda Taşlı,Tulu Kebat,Senem Deniz,Nazif Erkan,Gül Kitapçıoğlu,Enver Vardar 대한병리학회 2013 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.47 No.6
Background: Because there may be interdepartmental differences in macroscopic sampling of cholecystectomy specimens, we aimed to investigate differences between the longitudinal sampling technique and our classical sampling technique in cholecystectomy specimens in which there was no obvious malignancy. Methods: Six hundred eight cholecystectomy specimens that were collected between 2011 and 2012 were included in this study. The first group included 273 specimens for which one sample was taken from each of the fundus, body, and neck regions (our classical technique). The second group included 335 specimens for which samples taken from the neck region and lengthwise from the fundus toward the neck were placed together in one cassette (longitudinal sampling). The Pearson chi-square, Fisher exact, and ANOVA tests were used and differences were considered significant at p<.05. Results: In the statistical analysis, although gallbladders in the first group were bigger, the average length of the samples taken in the second group was greater. Inflammatory cells, pyloric metaplasia, intestinal metaplasia, low grade dysplasia, and invasive carcinoma were seen more often in the second group. Conclusions: In our study, the use of a longitudinal sampling technique enabled us to examine a longer mucosa and to detect more mucosal lesions than did our classical technique. Thus, longitudinal sampling can be an effective technique in detecting preinvasive lesions.

Different studies have demonstrated changes in chitotriosidase (ChT) activity and concentrations in multiple diseases. However, changes in ChT activity and concentrations have not been concurrently evaluated in patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). In this study, we analyzed the changes in serum ChT activity and concentrations in patients with FMF. The study included a total of 80 patients with FMF and 80 healthy controls. ChT enzyme activity and concentrations were measured and then compared between the groups. ChT activity was measured by using fluorometric ELISA and ChT concentrations were measured by using colorimetric ELISA methods. The median ChT activity was 10.00 (6.00–15.00) nmol/mL/hr in the patients and 14.00 (6.25–20.75) nmol/mL/hr in the controls. There was a statistically significant difference in the ChT activity between the controls and patients (P = 0.027). The median ChT concentrations were 65.40 (46.20–84.92) pg/mL and 125.00 (75.72–143.95) pg/mL in the patients and controls, respectively (P < 0.001), which were expressed as median percentiles (25th–75th). Additionally, we found no correlation between C-reactive protein and ChT activity (P = 0.978, r = 0.003) and concentrations (P = 0.446, r = −0.87). Serum ChT enzyme activity and concentrations may not be considered as a biomarker in FMF patients taking colchicine. New studies are needed to evaluate the changes of enzyme activity and concentration in colchicine-negative patients.

<P>AC and dc magnetic measurements in temperature interval 5-350 K and at external magnetic field H les 5 T were employed to probe the finite-size and nonstoichiometry effects on magnetic ordering of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 half-doped manganite compound. It is shown that the complex mixed magnetic ordering in bulk samples appears to be unstable regarding the both effects. The strongest one is the size effect, suppressing the mixed order and inducing the ferromagnetic-like one, which is characteristic also for other half-doped manganites. The small variations in cation composition (nonstoichiometry), which don't influence the crystal structure, lead to strong perturbations in the mixed magnetic ordering of the bulk. The results obtained are discussed in the terms of pronounced competition of spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom, characteristic for doped manganites.</P>

<P>Electron spin resonance was studied on three (two bulk and one nanometer sized) samples of the same La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 manganite compound aiming to compare their magnetic homogeneities. The results obtained show that both ceramic and single crystalline bulk samples are less homogeneous than nano-crystalline one. Except for higher homogeneity, the nano sample demonstrates also a weaker magnetic anisotropy. As a result, well pronounced coexistence of different magnetic phases (coexistence of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic resonance signals) is observed in bulk samples, while it is absent in nano. It is suggested that such strong difference is directly connected to the difference in structural state of the samples. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)</P>

TiO2 nanowire/nanotube electrodes were synthesized by anodization of titanium foils in ethylene glycol solution containing 0.5 wt% NH4F and 1 wt% water at 60 V for 6 h. The microstructure and morphology of the asprepared electrodes were investigated by XRD and SEM. A possible formation mechanism and oxidation parameters of nanocomposite structure were discussed. The relationship between structural characteristics of TiO2 nanowire/nanotube electrodes and its photoelectrochemical characterization were evaluated by electrochemical analyzer and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution. Furthermore, these TiO2 nanowire/nanotube electrodes promoted the photoelectrochemical characterization due to the larger surface areas, enhanced light harvesting and electron transport rate. The results show that photocurrent density of 1.44mA/cm2 and photocatalytic degradation of 95.51% was achieved for TiO2 nanowire/nanotube electrodes, which were 0.55mA/cm2 and 20.52% higher than the TiO2 nanotube electrodes under a similar condition, respectively.

Perovskite structured barium titanate particles ($BaTiO_3$) platelets were synthesized by molten salt synthesis and topochemical microcrystal conversion. As the precursors of $BaTiO_3$, plate-like $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ particles were first synthesized by the reaction of $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$, $BaCO_3$, and $TiO_2$ at $1080^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in $BaCl_2$-KCl molten salt. After the topochemical reactions, layer-structured $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ particles transformed to the perovskite $BaTiO_3$ platelets. $BaTiO_3$ particles with thickness of approximately $0.5{\mu}m$ and a length of $10-15{\mu}m$ retained the morphology feature of the $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ precursor. For <001> $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-32.5PbTiO_3$ (PMNT)-5 wt % PbO piezoelectric ceramics textured with 5 vol % of $BaTiO_3$ templates, the Lotgering factor reached 0.82, and $d_{33}$ was 870 pC/N.
