In our previous work, an acidic homogenous polysaccharide TAPA1 purified from Tremella aurantialba and its acetylated derivative TAPA1-ac, deacetylated derivative TAPA1-deac and sulfated fractions TAPA1-s were obtained by chemical modification and their partially chemical characterization were investigated. In present work, the antioxidant activities of various polysaccharides, including TAPA1, and its three derivative fractions, were determined in terms of scavenging of superoxide anion radicals and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by using chemiluminescence measurements, and their activities of oxidative injury rehabilitation were assessed by using PC12 oxidative injury model induced with H2O2. In general, compared with TAPA1, TAPA1-ac showed significant antioxidant activities and higher oxidative injury protection effects, whereas TAPA1-deac and TAPA1-s showed lower effects. These findings seemed to suggest that antioxidant effects and rehabilitation effect of oxidative injury, relate to not only different substituted group, but also the content and the degree of substitution (DS) of acetyl group, indicating that acetylation of TAPA1 was an effective means of enhancing its antioxidant activity and rehabilitation effect.
Risk Factors of Acoustic Neuroma: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Purpose: Many epidemiological studies have investigated environmental risk factors for the development of acoustic neuroma. However, these results are controversial. We conducted a meta-analysis of case-control studies to identify any potential relationshipbetween history of noise exposure, smoking, allergic diseases, and risk of acoustic neuroma. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed to identify relevant articles. Two researchers evaluated the eligibility and extracted the data independently. Results: Eleven case-control studies were included in our meta-analysis. Acoustic neuroma was found to be associated with leisurenoise exposure [odds ratio (OR)=1.33, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05–1.68], but not with occupational noise exposure and ever noise exposure (OR=1.20, 95% CI: 0.84–1.72 and OR=1.15, 95% CI: 0.80–1.65). The OR of acoustic neuroma for ever (versus never) smoking was 0.53 (95% CI: 0.30–0.94), while the subgroup analysis indicated ORs of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.81–1.10) and 0.49 (95% CI: 0.41–0.59) for ex-smoker and current smoker respectively. The ORs for asthma, eczema, and seasonal rhinitis were 0.98 (95% CI: 0.80–1.18), 0.91 (95% CI: 0.76–1.09), and 1.52 (95% CI: 0.90–2.54), respectively. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis is suggestive of an elevated risk of acoustic neuroma among individuals who were ever exposed to leisure noise, but not to occupational noise. Our study also indicated a lower acoustic neuroma risk among ever and current cigarettesmokers than never smokers, while there was no significant relationship for ex-smokers. No significant associations were found between acoustic neuroma and history of any allergic diseases, such as asthma, eczema, and seasonal rhinitis.

At the background of the global financial crisis, the severe employment situation makes enterpreneurship becomes the first choice for many university graduates. The state-related institutions, the society and the universities are creating conditions for graduates. However, the entrepreneurial graduates are faced on more risks and uncertainties than ordinary business entrepreneurs. From the project management"s view, using risk matrix method, this article plans to recognize and analyze the risk of them, and expects to provide ideas to deal with the corresponding risks through an example.

Forward osmosis (FO) membrane is a promising membrane technique. However, its application in desalination is limited. Thus, we synthesized MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃ via solvent-thermal method to fabricate MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃/cellulose acetate (CA) composite membranes of high desalination performance. MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃ and MIL-53(Fe) particles were studied using XRD, FITR, SEM, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, and AFM. The structural features of MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃/CA membrane and MIL-53(Fe)/CA membrane were analyzed using SEM, AFM and water contact angle. The reverse salt flux and water flux of the MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃/CA membrane reached 1.78 g m<SUP>-2</SUP> h<SUP>-1</SUP> and 37.1 L m<SUP>-2 </SUP>h<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively, when the deionized water and 1 M NaCl solution were the feed solution and traction solution, respectively. Compared to the MIL-53(Fe)/CA membrane, the MIL-53(Fe)@γ-Al₂O₃/CA membrane demonstrated better perviousness and selectivity properties of the membrane. This study shows a potential advantage of MOF composites as additives for improvement in the desalination performance of forward osmosis membranes.

Neurotoxicity of acrylonitrile evaluated by manganese enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Acrylonitrile (ACN), a chemical compound commonly used to manufacture plastics, has been found in drin king water and as a pollutant in the air. Exposure to high levels of ACN leads to brain lesions via oxidative stress-induced injury. To date, there is no non-invasive method of examining brain lesions. We determined if manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) can be used to detect brain lesions in ACN-treated rats by exploiting the binding properties of manganese to the enzymes manganesesuperoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and glutamine synthetase (GS). Rats exposed to low, mid, and high doses of ACN over 7 days were subjected to MEMRI on the eighth day. Contrast enhancement of the brain decreased in ACN-treated rats, along with marked decreases in Mn-SOD and GS activities, particularly in mid- and high-ACN treated rats. Our study indicates that MEMRI may be a potential non-invasive method of detecting ACN-induced oxidative damage.

Single-repeat R3 MYB transcription factors (R3 MYBs) regulate epidermal cell fate determination in Arabidopsis through a lateral inhibition mechanism. Previously we have shown that poplar R3 MYB genes regulate trichome formation when expressed in Arabidopsis. Here we report the identification and functional characterization of a poplar R3 MYB-like protein, Populus trichocarpa R3 MYB-LIKE1 (PtrRML1). So far all the MYB transcription factors identified have a highly conserved N-terminal DNA-binding domain composed of MYB repeats and a highly variable C-terminal domain. However, PtrRML1 has a single R3 MYB repeat at its C-terminal and an LxLxL repressor motif-containing N-terminal, and with amino acids about twice of that of the known R3 MYBs. PtrRML1 is localized in nuclear in transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing PtrRML1-GFP. PtrRML1 repressed reporter gene expression in protoplasts, and it interacted with GL3 in plant cells. Expression of PtrRML1 in Arabidopsis resulted in glabrous phenotypes, increased number of root hairs, and decreased anthocyanin accumulation. Consist with these observation, the expression levels of some MBW component genes and some of their target genes involved in the regulation of epidermal cell fate determination and anthocyanin biosynthesis, including TRY, CPC, ETC1, GL1, GL2, DFR, UF3GT and TT8 were reduced in the transgenic plants.

<P>Direct growth of graphene on traditional glasses is of great importance for various daily life applications. We report herein the catalyst-free atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition approach to directly synthesizing large-area, uniform graphene films on solid glasses. The optical transparency and sheet resistance of such kinds of graphene glasses can be readily adjusted together with the experimentally tunable layer thickness of graphene. More significantly, these graphene glasses find a broad range of real applications by enabling the low-cost construction of heating devices, transparent electrodes, photocatalytic plates, and smart windows.
