        Effect of Chromium Picolinate on Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, Serum Metabolites and Metabolism of Lipid in Pigs

        The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of chromium picolinate (CrP) on growth, carcass characteristics and serum metabolites in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 96 Landrace$\times$Yorkshire$\times$Duroc hybrid pigs, initial live weight about $38.12{\pm}00kg$, were randomly assigned to 2 groups (16 pigs per pen, 3 pens per group), each group had 48 pigs with an equal number of barrows and gilts. The pigs were fed the diet with or without $200{\mu}g/kg$ Cr from CrP. The results indicated that the addition of $200{\mu}g/kg$ CrP increased ADG by 3.58% and decreased feed conversion rate (FCR) by 3.00% compared to the control group. Pigs fed CrP had 7.58% (p<0.05) higher carcass lean percentage, 15.55% (p<0.05) larger longissimus muscle area (LMA) and 10.90% (p<0.05) lower back fat thickness, 15.17% (p<0.05) lower carcass fat percentage. In addition, the IGF-I level in serum was elevated by 79.20% (p<0.05), the Insulin and cortisol level decreased by 27.35% (p<0.05) and 34.58% (p<0.05) respectively with supplementation of CrP. Analysis of subcutaneous fat (10th rib) showed that the activity of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) increased by 79.58% (p<0.05) and the activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (ISD) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) decreased significantly by 15.06% (p<0.05) and 54.53% (p<0.05) respectively in the $200{\mu}g/kg$ CrP group. The concentration of RNA, RNA/DNA in LMA increased by 31.89% (p<0.05) and 5.41% (p<0.05) respectively with the addition of CrP. These results suggest that CrP reduced fat deposits by decreasing lipogenic enzyme activities and increasing HSL activity and may have promoted muscle anabolic metabolism through elevated IGF-I levels.

        Growth Associated Hormones Response and Fat Metabolism Change in Finishing Pigs Fed with n-Methyl-d, L-Aspartate

        A trial was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary NMA on several growth associated hormones and fat metabolism in finishing pigs. A total of 84 crossbred finishing pigs (average initial BW of $56{\pm}$0.37kg) were divided into 6 pens, 14 pigs per pen (7 gilts and 7 barrows per pen). 3 pens of pigs were fed with control diet (corn-soybean meal) and the others were fed control diet addition with 50 mg/kg NMA. During the trial, all pigs were given free access to feed and water. After 44 days trial, 8 pigs from each treatment (4 gilts and 4 barrows, weight similar to average group weight, $86.94{\pm}0.71kg$ for control group, and $90.55{\pm}1.51kg$ for NMA treated group) were sacrificed to collect the sample of the liver, longissimus muscle, subcutaneous fat (10th rib). The addition of NMA in diet increased the IGF-I, Insulin, T3, T4 levels in serum by 50.68% (p<0.05), 38.36% (p<0.05), 123.33% (p<0.01), 60.58% (p<0.03), respectively. Meanwhile, IGF-I level in the liver and the muscle were increased with 17.83% (p<0.03) and 26.00% (p<0.03) with addition of NMA. The data from subcutaneous fat (10th rib) analysis showed that supplement of 50 mg/kg NMA decreased the total activities of malic dehydrogenase (MDH) by 20.54% (p<0.05), glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-DPH) by 16.97% (p<0.05), and decreased the specific activities of MDH and G-6-DPH by 37.46% (p<0.01) and 35.06% (p<0.01), respectively. The hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) total activity was increased by 25.00% (p<0.05) in NMA treated pigs. These results indicated that addition of 50 mg/kg NMA to diet can induce the endocrine great change in finishing pigs, furthermore, inhibit the fat synthesis through suppressing lipogenic enzymes and promote the fat degradation by elevating HSL activity in finishing pigs.

        Circ_0101622 governs the miR-1179/RAB23 pathway to promote the aggressive progression of thyroid cancer

        Background Numerous circular RNAs (circRNAs) are functionally investigated in human cancers. However, there are still a large number of circRNAs with unclear functions. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the role of circ_0101622 in thyroid cancer. The expression of circ_0101622, microRNA-1179 (miR-1179), and Ras-associated binding protein 23 (RAB23) was measured using quantitative real-time PCR method. The protein levels of E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and RAB23 were detected by western blot. For functional analyses, cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion were assessed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, flow cytometry assay, wound-healing assay, and Transwell assay, respectively. Glycolysis was assessed by glucose consumption and lactate production. The binding between miR-1179 and circ_0101622 or RAB23 was determined by dualluciferase reporter assay and RIP assay. Animal study was performed to verify the role of circ_0101622. Circ_0101622 showed high expression in thyroid cancer tissues and cells. Results Circ_0101622 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and glycolysis metabolism in vitro and blocked tumor growth in vivo. Mechanism analysis found that circ_0101622 functioned as miR-1179 sponge to release RAB23. Circ_0101622 knockdown inhibited cancer development by enriching miR-1179, and miR-1179 restoration inhibited cancer development by sequestering RAB23. Conclusion Circ_0101622 might act as an oncogenic driver to promote the malignant progression of thyroid cancer by mediating the miR-1179/RAB23 pathway.

        Gentrification in Urban China under Market Transformation

        After the reform and opening up in 1978, urban social space has been reconstructing according to market principals in China. With the gradual differentiation of urban social classes and the expansion of the middle class, gentrification has presented itself in metropolises of China in the process of urban renewal. It is a process of social space reconstruction that is initiated and facilitated by the government, and participated by investors, financial institutions and the middle class together. The previous study on gentrification in China pays more attention to physical renewal, neglecting its social function. This paper thinks that it is a process of the reproduction of urban space in the course of market transformation, mainly dominated by governments, among which, the central government aims to construct a harmonious society and the local states purpose is focused on urban management.

        Research and practice of health monitoring for long-span bridges in the mainland of China

        The large number of long-span bridges constructed in China motivates the applications ofstructural health monitoring (SHM) technology. Many bridges have been equipped with sophisticated SHMsystems in the mainland of China and in Hong Kong of China. Recently, SHM technology has beenextended to field test systems. In this view, SHM can serve as a tool to develop the methods of life-cycleperformance design, evaluation, maintenance and management of bridges; to develop new structuralanalysis methods through validation and feedback from SHM results; and to understand the behavior ofbridges under natural and man-made disasters, rapidly assess the damage and loss of structures over largeregions after disasters, e.g., earthquake, typhoon, flood, etc. It is hoped that combining analytical methods,numerical simulation, small-scale tests and accelerated durability tests with SHM could become the mainengine driving the development of bridge engineering. This paper demonstrates the above viewpoint.

        Inhibition of human liver cancer cell growth by evodiamine involves apoptosis and deactivation of PI3K/AKT pathway

        Evodiamine is an active alkaloid member found in Traditional Chinese Herb (TCH) Evodia rutaecarpa. It has been reported to exhibit remarkable biological and medicinal activities including anticancer and anti-inflammatory. This study was designed to investigate the anticancer effects of evodiamine against human liver cancer and evaluate its effects on cell migration, cell invasion, cellular apoptosis and PI3K/AKT pathway. The results showed that evodiamine exhibits potent antiproliferative effects against two human liver cancer cell lines (HepG2 and PLHC-1) with an IC50 of 20 μM. Nonetheless, the cytotoxic effects of evodiamine were comparatively low against the normal cells as evident from the IC50 of 100 μM. The growth inhibitory effects of evodiamine were found to be due to the induction of apoptosis as revealed by the DAPI, AO/EB and annexin V/PI staining assays. The induction of apoptosis was also associated with upregulation of Bax and downregulation of Bcl-2 expression in a concentration dependent manner. The wound healing and transwell assay revealed that evodiamine caused a significant decline in the migration and invasion of the HepG2 and PLHC-1 cells. Investigation of the effects of evodiamine on the PI3K/AKT signalling revealed that evodiamine inhibited the phosphorylation of PI3K and AKT proteins. Taken together, the results showed that evodiamine inhibits the growth of human liver cancer via induction of apoptosis and deactivation of PI3K/AKT pathway. The results point towards the therapeutic potential of evodiamine in the treatment of liver cancer.

        Spectral CT Multiparameter Angiography in the Diagnosis of Aortic Stent Endoleak

        Endoleak has potential risk of rupture for endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). CT is the main follow-up method to detect and classify possible endoleaks. As a novel imaging technique, a dual-layer spectral detector CT (SDCT) can provide multi-parameter images, which could display endoleaks with high sensitivity. This case study presents the advantage of SDCT in detecting endoleaks.
