Objectives: This study investigated the association between menopausal-specific quality of life (MENQOL) and breast cancer screening beliefs among Hong Kong Chinese menopausal and postmenopausal women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed to collect data. The questionnaire was distributed to a convenience sample of 218 women aged above 45. The outcome variables were breast cancer screening beliefs and breast examination. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the effect of 4 domains in MENQOL (vasomotor, psycho-social, physical, and sexual symptom) and the health behaviors on the 2 outcome variables. Results: This study found that the overall MENQOL scores (in particular psycho-social, and physical aspects) were significantly associated with positive attitudes toward health check-ups and better knowledge and perceptions in breast cancer. Regular exercise was also significantly related to breast examination. Conclusions: MENQOL (especially psycho-social and physical domain) and regular exercise are important factors associated with breast cancer screening beliefs. The results of this study illuminate health care professionals to develop primary health care strategies to improve the quality of life of mid-life women.
Utility Specialists in Hong Kong : A Corpus Study of Perception of Communicative Competence
Winnie Cheng 한국코퍼스언어학회 2015 Corpus Linguistics Research Vol.1 No.-
The paper reports on part of a larger scale collaborative and interdisciplinary project among English Applied Studies, Land Surveying and Geo-informatics, and utility specialists industry in engineering in Hong Kong. The present study interviewed 36 utility specialists in Hong Kong to find out their understanding of and perceived importance of communicative competences in English situated in their professional workplaces. The corpora created from the interview data were analysed in several complementary and inter-connected ways, namely word lists, concgram lists, and key semantic fields, to ascertain the kinds of meanings or topical concerns and themes expressed by the professionals when they talked about different types of competences in communication, namely linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic, socio-cultural, and social in their workplace. The project has also achieved effective outcomes in terms of knowledge sharing and exchange with the industry.
Green Activism in the City: Hong Kong Independent Ecofilms in the Post-2008 Era
Winnie L M YEE 연세대학교 영어영문학과 BK21 Plus 사업단 2018 Situations: Cultural Studies in the Asian Context Vol.11 No.1
More and more people are acutely aware of the pollutants entering the city from the industries in Southern China, more people are “going green,” and discussions of animal rights have become much more prominent. Still, the lack of imminent danger seems to have lulled the citizens of Hong Kong into a comfortable sense that they are, at least temporarily, free from global climate change. Two arenas of ecocritical responsibility will be examined in this paper: alternative communities, with a focus on Sangwoodgoon, and the thriving ecocinema scene in Hong Kong. Sangwoodgoon combines farming activities with films, art, and performance, creating a platform that connects the aesthetic portrayal of the land with the physical working of the land. It seeks to engage audiences with the land, both as a physical site and as a rich terrain of the imagination. The combination of art appreciation and farm-related activities encourages members to reflect on life and environment, nature and development, the local and the globe.
A Simple Interactive 3D Interior Design Application for Living Room - Cost Management
Winnie, Chin,Hui, Saw Seow,Gee, Yap Seok Korea Multimedia Society 2017 The journal of multimedia information system Vol.4 No.3
The title of this project is "A Simple Interactive 3D Interior Design Application for Living Room - Cost Management", focusing on developing an application that enables costing and designing to be executed concurrently in interior design phases. This is because any changes made at costing phase after design phase is completed, it will potentially lead to unnecessary increase in cost and time. Therefore, the objective of this project is aimed to devise a cost management module to be included in the proposed application, allowing interior designer to make cost-based decision at the designing phase itself. This can be achieved through its proposed functions which include total cost update, budget management, cost estimator calculator and material list generation. The methodology being proposed in this project is Prototyping Development, categorized under Rapid Application Development (RAD), by starting off with planning, analysis, design and implementation phases are performed concurrently and repeatedly in a cycle to produce a prototype until the application is completed. In the end of this project, the developed prototype is expected to contribute a better solution towards cost management in interior design.
The effect of self-efficacy for increasing fruit and vegetables consumption among male firefighters
Winnie Wing Man Ng,Kin Cheung 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10
Self-efficacy is the key strategy to change health behaviors such as eating behaviors on fruit and vegetables intakes. However, limited studies explore the effect of self-efficacy in fruit and vegetables intake, especially for male firefighters. Aim: This study aims to investigate the effect of self-efficacy in the consumption of fruit and vegetables among male firefighters. Methods: The convenience and snowball sampling methods were used to recruit male firefighters from September 2018 to May 2019. Written consent and questionnaire were completed for 48 firefighters to participate in the study at baseline (T0). Randomization was performed by an independent staff member, who was not involved in any other procedure in this study. Twenty-three firefighters from 17 fire stations were allocated to the intervention group (printed pamphlet and teaching materials through WhatsApp) while 25 from six fire stations were allocated to the control group (printed pamphlet). Results: The eating self-efficacy was evaluated by using self-report questionnaire at baseline, 3 and 6 months after the intervention. Test results with p < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. A total of 45 participants completed this study. Three of them withdrew from the study due to personal issues. Self-efficacy on fruit consumption was significantly improved in both groups, while self-efficacy on vegetables consumption was only found in the control group. Conclusions: Results showed that more work is required to improve the self-efficacy on vegetables consumption. In general, the preparation of fruit might be easier than that of vegetables. Chinese prefer cooked vegetables instead of raw ones, like salad. As a result, the preparation of vegetables might impede firefighters’ self-efficacy. Further research is required to explore the factors affecting firefighters’ self-efficacy on vegetables consumption, and the corresponding improvement strategies.
Exploring phraseological variations by concgramming
Winnie Cheng,Maggie Leung 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2012 언어연구 Vol.29 No.3
The significance of studying the co-selection of words has long been recognized. More traditional corpus linguistic approaches or tools help to find co-selections in the form of contiguous words (i.e. n-gram, or lexical bundles and clusters) or non-contiguous patterns. However, phraseologies in the form of non-contiguous co-occurrence with positional variations are rarely examined. Here it is argued that they are worth examining and have significance for better understanding language use and meaning. One reason for the rare discussion of these phraseologies is that they are not easily discovered with more traditional approaches and tools. This paper describes the realisation of different patterns of phraseological variations, exemplified with five concgrams (i.e. co-occurrence of words) extracted from two profession-specific corpora. With the use of an innovative corpus linguistic software, ConcGram 1.0 (Greaves, 2009), the frequencies and patterns of all of the possible phraseological variations (constituency and positional variations) of the concgrams are analysed. The illustration and analysis have implications on the application values of studying phraseological variations using concgramming.
