        Steel Bridge Construction of Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge

        The 55-km-long Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge (HZMB) is the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge, connecting Hong Kong with Zhuhai and Macao at the mouth of the Pearl River Estuary in China, comprising 22.9-km-long steel bridges. HZMB is the leading steel bridge in China, with top-level manufacturing and installation technology. This paper outlines the steel bridge construction experiences of HZMB to provide comparisons for the construction of other long sea-crossing steel bridges at home or abroad. The main considerations of construction constraints, scheme selection, structural and aesthetic design of HZMB are presented, and the following points related to new strategies in the steel bridge construction of HZMB are elaborated: (1) construction quality assurance, (2) automatic manufacturing technology, (3) large segment off shore installation, (4) eco-friendly paint (content limitation of volatile organic compounds) and new multifunctional inspection gantry, and (5) Guss Mastic Asphalt steel deck pavement system. The successful implementation of those strategies shows that the steel bridge construction of HZMB promotes improvement in the overall construction and management level of the Chinese bridge industry. The advanced experience of HZMB has opened up broad prospects for the design and construction of off shore bridge engineering in China.

        Investigation on the Effects of Welding Speed on Bobbin Tool Friction Stir Welding of 2219 Aluminum Alloy

        The microstructure and mechanical properties of bobbin tool friction stir welded joints for 2219-T87 aluminum alloy usingdifferent welding speeds were investigated based on the experimental results together with a thermo-mechanical modeldeveloped. The stir zone created in the joint shows a dumbbell shape. As welding speed increases, both the width and grainsize of stir zone decrease. The symmetrical hardness distribution forms across the joint thickness, while the asymmetrichardness is measured along the width of the stir zone. The hardness of the stir zone on the retreating side is lower than thaton the advancing side. The hardness profile presents a W-shape, with the minimum values measured increasing with weldingspeed. The tensile residual stresses increase gradually towards the center of the joint from the outer surface, presentinga symmetrical feature as well. As welding speed increases, both the tensile strength and elongation show a maximum value70% of joint efficiency. Tensile fracture occurs in the stir zone and shows a symmetrical surface with three different layerfracture modes identified. In layers I and III, the fracture surface presents 45° direction, while fracture propagates along theS-line in layer II.

        The Ability of Bone Mineral Density and Microstructural Indices to Reflect the Mechanical Properties of Trabecular Bone in the Intertrochanteric Region

        목적: 본 연구의 목적은 골밀도와 미세 골구조의 성질이 전자부 골소주의 기계적 특성(예, 탄성계수)에 미치는 영향을 연구하는 것이다. 대상 및 방법: 인공관절 전치환술을 시행 받은 15명의 환자로부터 대퇴골 전자부에서 총 15개의 고관절 골소주 시편을 채취하여, 이들을 대상으로 PIXImus2 골밀도 측정기, 고해상도 미세 컴퓨터 단층촬영기, 유한요소법을 이용하여 골밀도와 2차 및 3차원 미세구조 지수, 그리고 기계적 특성을 분석하였다. 골밀도, 구조 지수, 탄성계수 간의 상관관계를 선형회귀분석을 이용하여 통계처리하였다. 결과: 저자들의 본 연구에서 골밀도 및 골 체적비는 기계적 특성을 예측하는데 가장 중요한 인자였으며, 삼차원 마세구조 지수(예를 들어 구조 모델 지수) 또한 51% 정도 통계적으로 의미 있게 기계적 특성을 예측하였다. 골밀도와 미세구조지수를 조합한 경우에 탄성계수의 변화량을 예측하는데 잘 반영하였다. 결론: 골밀도와 미세구조지수를 이용한 복합적인 분석은 전자부에서 탄성계수를 예측하는데 가장 좋은 방법이다. Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the contribution of bone mineral density (BMD) and the microstructural properties of trabecular bone to predict its mechanical property, i.e., its elastic modulus in the intertrochanteric region. Materials and Methods: A total 15 trabecular bone core specimens were obtained from the proximal femurs of patients who were to undergo to total hip arthroplasties. The BMD measurement, 2-D and 3-D microstructural parameters, and elastic modulus of each bone core were obtained with PIXImus2 densitometer, high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and micro-finite element analysis (FEA). The multiple relationships among the BMD, structural parameters and elastic modulus were assessed with using linear regression analysis. Results: Linear regression analysis demonstrated that the bone volume fraction (BV/TV) was the best predictor for Young's modulus, as well as the BMD. A 3-D microarchitectural parameter, the structure model index (SMI) could well explain the variance of Young's modulus by 51%. The ability to explain the variance of Young's modulus was improved by combining the structural indices with each other, as well as by supplementing the BMD with any of the examined structural indices. Conclusion: A combination of microstructural parameters with each other or with the bone mineral density measurement could provide the best predictions of the elastic modulus of cancellous bone in the intertrochanteric region.

        Timosaponin B-Ⅱ Inhibits Pro-inflammatory Cytokine Induction by Lipopolysaccharide in BV2 Cells

        It was reported that the total polysaccharides extracts from Anemarrhenae asphodeloides Bge(Liliaceae, rhizome) could inhibit inflammatory responses in various models. In the present study, the effects of Timosaponin B-II, a purified extract from A. asphodeloidesb, on the expressions of IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6, the activity of NF-κB and the activation of signal pathway related to NF-κB were explored in vitro. Timosaponin B-Ⅱ significantly attenuated increase of these cytokines on both mRNA and protein levels from LPS-stimulated BV2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The reporter gene assay also showed that the activation of NF-κB induced by LPS was inhibited by pre-treatment with Timosaponin B-Ⅱ. Moreover, western blot results showed that the activation of p38, JNK and P65 had been decreased. These results suggest that both NF-κB signal pathway and MAPK pathway were involved in the inhibitory effects of Timosaponin B-II on the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

        Escherichia coli-Derived Outer Membrane Vesicles Deliver Galactose- 1-Phosphate Uridyltransferase and Yield Partial Protection against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in Mice

        In our previous studies, we have identified several in vivo-induced antigens and evaluated their potential as subunit vaccine candidates in a murine model, in which the recombinant protein GalT showed the most potent immunogenicity and immunoprotective efficacy against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. To exploit a more efficient way of delivering GalT proteins, in this study, we employed the widely studied E. coli outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) as a platform to deliver GalT protein and performed the vaccine trial using the recombinant GalTOMVs in the murine model. Results revealed that GalT-OMVs could elicit a highly-specific, IgG antibody titer that was comparable with the adjuvant GalT group. Significantly higher lymphocyte proliferation and cytokines secretion levels were observed in the GalT-OMVs group. 87.5% and 50% of mice were protected from a lethal dose challenge using A. pleuropneumoniae in active or passive immunization, respectively. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses showed remarkably reduced pathological changes and infiltration of neutrophils in the lungs of mice immunized with GalT-OMVs after the challenge. Taken together, these findings confirm that OMVs can be used as a platform to deliver GalT protein and enhance its immunogenicity to induce both humoral and cellular immune responses in mice.

        현대 추상 수묵화의 구성언어 실현 연구 - 수묵화의 추상 표현을 중심으로

        본 논문은 『현대 추상 수묵화의 구성언어 실현 연구』라는 주제로 수묵화의 추상 표현을 중심으로 수묵화에 대한 현대적인 맥락(脈絡)에서 추상회화의 구성언어 실현 가능성을 규명(糾明)하는 것이 근본 목적이다. 본론 부분은 동·서양의 선행작가들을 통하여 그려지는 추상형식의 구성언어로 인하여 나타나는 추상미의 표현을 열거(列擧)함으로써 그 추상예술 표현의 특징을 찾아볼 것이다. 그리고 현대 추상 수묵화형식의 구성언어로 추상미 표현방법을 분석하였다. 그래서 현대 추상 수묵화의 구성언어 실현 가능성을 탐색(探索)할 수 있었다. 연구의 성과는 현대 추상 수묵화 구성언어의 실현 가능한 개연성(蓋然性)을 가지고 심미(審美)의 예술성 가치가 있는 추상작품을 창작하게 됨을 알게 되었다. 그러므로 추상 수묵화 구성언어가 실현된 심미적 추상 미학의 세계가 작품에서 표현됨을 파악할 수 있었다. 따라서 현대 추상 수묵화의 구성언어 실현은 첫째, 필묵과 기법(技法)으로 실현의 가능성을 엿볼 수 있다. 둘째, 의미와 정감(情感)으로 실현 가능성이 도출되었다. 셋째, 주제와 입의(立意)에서 실현 가능해진다. 넷째, 기하원소와 구조(構造)로 실현 가능성이 나타난다. 결과적으로 수묵화의 작품 화면에서 현 시대적 흐름에 맞는 추상형식 구성언어의 실현 가능성은 향후(向後) 추상화 창작 활동을 하는 데에 큰 도움이 되고 작품에서 현대 추상 수묵화의 구성언어에 대한 독특한 화풍(畫風)을 찾고자 하는 때에 본고(本稿)는 촉매(觸媒) 역할을 할 것으로 본다. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of realizing the configurational language of abstract black ink paintings in a modern context for black ink painting centering on its abstract expression under the theme of “A Study of the Realization of the Configurational Language of Modern Abstract Black Ink Painting.” The main text will find the characteristics of the abstract art expressions by listing the expressions of abstract beauty displayed by composition language, which is an abstract form portrayed by preceding artists of the East and West. Moreover, it analyzed the method for expressing abstract beauty with the composition language in the form of contemporary abstract ink painting. Furthermore, the ability to realize the configurational language of modern abstract black ink paintings was explored. As a result, it was found that abstract works of aesthetic and artistic value were created with the possibility of realizing the configurational language of modern abstract black ink paintings. Accordingly, aesthetic abstract beauty with configurational language of abstract black ink paintings was shown in the works of art. Therefore, the configurational language of modern abstract black ink paintings can be realized (1) with pen and ink and the technique, (2) based on the meaning and feelings, (3) from the theme and the conveyance of meaning, and (4) through elements and structure. In conclusion, the possibility of realizing an abstract composition on the scene of ink-and-wash painting in line with the current trend significantly benefits the creation of abstract paintings in the future. It would also act as a catalyst in finding unique styles in the composition of modern abstract ink-and-wash painting.

      • Simulation of turbulent flow of turbine passage with uniform rotating velocity of guide vane

        In this study, a computational method for wall shear stress combined with an implicit direct-forcing immersed boundary method is presented. Near the immersed boundaries, the sub-grid stress is determined by a wall model in which the wall shear stress is directly calculated from the Lagrangian force on the immersed boundary. A coupling mathematical model of the transition process for a model Francis turbine comprising turbulent flow and rotating rigid guide vanes is established. The spatiotemporal distributions of pressure, velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantity are gained with the transient process; the drag and lift coefficients as well as other forces (moments) are also obtained as functions of the attack angle. At the same time, analysis is conducted of the characteristics of pressure pulsation, velocity stripes and vortex structure at some key parts of flowing passage. The coupling relations among the turbulent flow, the dynamical force (moment) response of blade and the rotating of guide vane are also obtained.

        Novel HMW glutenin genes from Aegilops tauschii and their unique structures

        A pair of novel high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) 1Dx5.3t and 1Dy12.1**t were revealed and characterized from Ae. tauschii accession PI554324. SDS-PAGE band of 1Dx5.3t was between those of 1Bx6 and 1Bx7, while 1Dy12.1**t with slightly faster migration rate than that of 1Dy12. The lengths of 1Dx5.3t and 1Dy12.1**t were 2115 bp and 1986 bp, encoding 703 and 660 amino acid residues,respectively. Their authenticity was confirmed by successful expression of the coding regions in Escherichia coli. 1Dx5.3t is the shortest of the known Dx-type alleles. 1Dy12.1**t is also a special subunit since it has an additional cysteine in the front of the central repetitive domain. This cysteine that is not existed in previously reported Dy-type genes may be useful for improving bread wheat quality. Median-joining Network analysis indicated that 1Dy12.1**t may be a key site in the genealogy of the Glu-Dy.
