Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Blocking of Cell Proliferation, Cytokines Production and Genes Expression Following Administration of Cordyceps sinensis in the Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluids Cells. Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production. The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

Adaptive Trajectory Compensation of Large Inertia Robot

        Kuo Yang,Xin-hui Liu,Bing-wei Cao,Wei Chen,Peng Tan 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2024 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.22 No.3

The electro-hydraulic controlled bionic robots suffer from path contour deviation, which is affected byinertia, system lag, and control system accuracy. The focus of this paper is on the study of a data-driven systemfor the compensation of errors in the robot’s internal arithmetic model and its own motion. A deviation predictionmodel of the robot motion process is constructed using a machine learning approach, while the spatial error, generated in the transfer process between the input trajectory and the actual output, is de-parameterized and regardedas an attribute value of the robot’s motion process. Furthermore, a data-based adaptive compensation method isproposed. The simulation model and a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform of the proposed control strategyare constructed, in order to verify the proposed control approach. Simulation and experimental results show that theproposed compensation strategy can significantly reduce system deviation.

Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy for L5–S1 Disc Herniation With High Iliac Crest: Technical Note and Preliminary Series

        Kuo-Tai Chen,Sung-Tai Wei,Chun Tseng,Su-Wei Ou,Li-Wei Sun,Chien-Min Chen 대한척추신경외과학회 2020 Neurospine Vol.17 No.sup.

With the trend of minimally invasive spine surgery, full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy (FELD) has evolved with the advancement of the optics and instruments. Regarding the techniques, the transforaminal and interlaminar approach remain the major accesses in FELD. Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) is an effective and safe treatment for herniation of the lumbar disc. More and more evidence supports the TELD in enhancing recovery and decreasing surgical complications. However, the learning curve of TELD remains steep, especially at the L5–S1 level. The iliac crest height is an essential factor in the operability of TELD at the L5–S1 level. In the situation of the high iliac crest, TELD is technically challenging even for an experienced surgeon. Therefore, the authors report their techniques of TELD with foraminoplasty step-by-step and the preliminary results in this report.

      • Development of an Inductorless Step-Down Converter

        Wei-Yu Wang,Jia-Hao Kuo,Kuo-Yuan Lo 전력전자학회 2019 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2019 No.5

The objective of this paper is to propose an inductorless non-isolated step-down converter. The proposed converter is composed of multiple charging pump dc-dc converters with interleaving operation. Based on the characteristic of charging pump capacitor, the presented converter does not require an inductor and can obtain the step-down output voltage. Advantages of the proposed converter include: inductorless power conversion, control circuit simplicity, low voltage stress, low input current ripple, low output voltage ripple, and fault-tolerant operation for each dc-dc converter module. Based on the circuit analysis, the power loss can be evaluated with the capacitance of bridge capacitor and switching frequency. Also, with the interleaved operation between the charging pump converters, the current ripple of the input can be reduced without the need of input inductor. The computer simulations and hardware experimental results are shown to verify the performance of the proposed inductorless step-down converter. The peak efficiency from an input voltage 100 V, output voltage 50 V, and output power 75W prototype is around 97.2%.

Scour depth evaluation of a bridge with a complex pier foundation

        Kuo-Wei Liao,Yasunori Muto,Jhe-Yu Lin 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.7

A scour depth prediction formula for a river bridge is established using experimental data in which the effects of the pier, pile-capand pile group are considered. More than 170 experimental data entries, including different pier structural sizes, flow depths and soilcovering depths, are collected and verified by existing formulae, which failed to deliver a promising prediction. A machine learningprediction model was then developed to enhance the accuracy. For application purpose, a sequential quadratic programmingoptimization was adopted to construct an explicit prediction formula. The MAPE was significantly improved from 102.8 to 28.9. Theresults indicate that the proposed formula can simultaneously satisfy the requirements of accuracy and simplicity. The proposedformula has the advantages of being conceptually consistent with observed scour behaviors and provides a solid scour depthprediction, which is an important and critical step in the bridge safety evaluation if floods are considered.

Reliability-based Evaluation of River-bridge Flood Resistance Ability Via a Visual Inspection Table

        Kuo-Wei Liao,Bang-Ho Wu,Wei-Lun Chen 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.9

This research establishes a reliability-based preliminary evaluation table for assessing river-bridge flood resistance. Flood resistance for a river-bridge is affected by numerous factors, including bridge structure, river environment, hydrology, and riverbank protection infrastructure. Flood resistance assessment is a complex issue that involves multiple areas of expertise. A comprehensive assessment process is extremely time-consuming and difficult to implement in practice, especially given the limited time and resources. Many bridges require risk evaluations. A preliminary visual inspection is often conducted in response to these problems. The primary issue with visual inspection is the high subjectivity regarding the understanding and standards for the various indicators. To solve this issue, a Bayesian Network (BN) is proposed to combine the contributions from experts and reliability analyses. Eight bridges are selected for performing FOSM-based reliability calculations using a parameterized ABAQUS model. An ideal preliminary inspection table enables a close relationship with the failure probability that is calculated from an advance analysis. Thus, PSO is employed to maximize the correlation between the scores obtained from the visual inspection table and the failure probability calculated from the BN to establish a reliability-based visual inspection table that provides a strong foundation for a bridge risk analysis.

      • The Inventory and Statistics of Potential Large-scale Landslide Areas in Southern Taiwan

        ( Kuo-wei Li ),( Chien-yu Lin ),( Jyh-jong Liao ),( Yi-wen Pan ),( Keng-hao Kang ),( Che-ming Yang ) 대한지질공학회 2019 대한지질공학회 학술발표회논문집 Vol.2019 No.2

This study produced an inventory of the 2,523 potential large-scale landslide areas (PLSLAs) in southern Taiwan. These PLSLAs were delineated using LiDAR DEM of 1m resolution after the 2009 Typhoon Morakot by other institutes. Using the inventory, we conducted a statistical analysis of the important geologic and geomorphologic factors possibly related to a PLSLA. The statistical analyses reveal that, among the 2,523 PLSLAs, (1) 82% of elevation are between 750 and 2,750 m, (2) 79% of the area are between 10 and 40 hectares, (3) 76% of the slope height are between 200 and 600 m, (4) 86% of the slope are between 25 and 40 degrees and (5) 83 percent of stream order are less than 3. Rock formations of these PLSLAs range from Oligocene to Miocene; 67% of the strata are slate, and 12% are interbedded of sandstone and shale. This study selected 24 medium to high risk cases of the 2,523 PLSLAs, and interpreted the micro-geomorphological features from 1m LiDAR DEM. The following three patterns were present: (1) PLSLA with clear features of gravitational slope deformation in slope height more than 500 m condition, (2) PLSLA with the relic of paleo landslides induced by gravitational buckling, toppling, or plane sliding, (3) PLSLA with river bank erosion on slope toe and head-cut erosion induced by gully development. Based on statistics, the stream order of the PLSLAs with gravitational slope deformation usually would exceed 3; 83% of PLSLAs are the areas also with paleo large-scale landslide.

Enhancing the Security of Credit Card Transaction based on Visual DSC

        ( Kuo-jui Wei ),( Jung-san Lee ),( Shin-jen Chen ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.3

People have transferred their business model from traditional commerce to e-commerce in recent decades. Both shopping and payment can be completed through the Internet and bring convenience to consumers and business opportunities to industry. These trade techniques are mostly set up based on the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). SSL provides the security for transaction information and is easy to set up, which makes it is widely accepted by individuals. Although attackers cannot obtain the real content even when the transferred information is intercepted, still there is risk for online trade. For example, it is impossible to prevent credit card information from being stolen by virtual merchant. Therefore, we propose a new mechanism to solve such security problem. We make use of the disposable dynamic security code (DSC) to replace traditional card security code. So even attackers get DSC for that round of transaction, they cannot use it for the next time. Besides, we apply visual secret sharing techniques to transfer the DSC, so that interceptors cannot retrieve the real DSC even for one round of trade. This way, we can improve security of credit card transaction and reliability of online business. The experiments results validate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed mechanism.

The Optimum Dietary Essential Amino Acid Pattern for Male Taiwan Country Chicks

        Wei, Hen-Wei,Kuo, Hsin-Mei,Chiu, Wen-Zan,Chen, Bao-Ji Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.8

The objective of this study was to estimate the optimum dietary essential amino acid pattern for male Taiwan country chicks. A series of experiments was conducted with chicks, 14 d of age, for 2 wks. A basal synthetic diet was established using a dose response test for all essential amino acids referring to the broiler requirements recommended by NRC (1994). Twelve chicks were sacrificed at the beginning to provide initial body nitrogen data, and every group of six birds received the basal diet or a diet with a deficiency in a single essential amino acid in twenty one treatments by intubation according to their daily metabolic body weight (MBW). Deposited body nitrogen was determined using comparative slaughtering. According to the daily intake from the limiting amino acid per unit of MBW and the body nitrogen accretion rates for every two deficient groups with the same limiting amino acid but at different levels, a corresponding straight line was computed for each essential amino acid to intersect with a horizontal line made by the body nitrogen accretion rate of the control group. The x coordinate of the intersection represented the daily requirement for growth plus maintenance based on MBW corresponding to the essential amino acid. The amino acid ratios can be considered as the optimum pattern of dietary essential amino acids. The results, expressed with respect to lysine = 100, were arginine 105, methionine 81, histidine 34, tryptophan 18, leucine 103, phenylalanine 135, isoleucine 69, threonine 65 and valine 79. This pattern could be utilized to compute the dietary requirements (g/kg feed) for all essential amino acids by multiplying by the requirement of a single essential amino acid cited from the literature.

A Probabilistic Safety Evaluation Framework for Multi-Hazard Assessment in a Bridge using SO-MARS Learning Model

        Kuo-Wei Liao,Nhat-Duc Hoang,Jessica Gitomarsono 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.22 No.3

A probabilistic evaluation procedure is established to assess a bridge safety against floods and earthquakes, which are the two major threats of a bridge in Taiwan. Scour depth distribution is used to reflect the flood hazard, in which swarm optimized multivariate adaptive regression splines (SO-MARS) is utilized to calculate scour depth density followed by Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and a scour risk curve is constructed. Displacement ductility is used to measure the bridge performance under attacks of both hazards through nonlinear time history analyses followed by a power law regression to build the fragility curve. A code-based probabilistic seismic hazard curve is constructed and the joint failure probability under seismic and flood attacks is obtained. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed methodology, in which the nonlinear behaviors in concrete (including core and cover areas), steel bar and soil are included in a bridge model. A threshold scour depth for a given earthquake (e.g., the return period or the peak ground acceleration is given) is derived to meet a specified target reliability. The suggested scour depth is a deterministic number which is immediately applicable in engineering practice.
