Christian Mission in a Five Hundred Year Context
Vol.25 No.-
The twentieth century was an extraordinary period in human history because a vast movement of population, the Great European Migration, that had shaped world history ended. In the twentieth century this movement of population reached its peak, then came to a halt and went into reverse. The Great European Migration lasted from about the beginning of the sixteenth century until the middle of the twentieth. The strangest religious aspect of the Migration was in the position of Christianity. When the Great European began in the sixteenth century, Christianity was the religion of Europe and a largely European religion. By the end of the twentieth a massive recession in the West, especially in Europe, and a massive accession in the rest of the world, and especially Africa, had transformed the cultural and demo-graphic distribution of Christianity. The majority of those who profess the Christian faith are now Africans, Asians, Latin Americans and Pacific Islanders; and they substantially outnumber the professed Christians of Europe, the old Christendom, and its North American outcrop. Christianity is now a predominantly non-western religion, the profession principally of African and Asian and Latin American people. Christianity had once more become, as in its beginnings, a non-Western religion and it has reverted to type. The balance of the Church has shifted and the idea of a “home base” in Europe and North America is no longer an operating concept. There are now an infinite number of segments of partially converted social reality within the Church. They are not simply many races, but many lifestyles, many cultures. Each is a building block in a new temple that is in precess of building and an organ in a functioning body of which Christ is the brain. Only together will they reach the fullness of Christ which is the completion and the perfection of humanity.

A novel cellular beam structure (CBS) intended for two to ten storey offi ce buildings has been developed by the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) which consists of prefabricated modules comprising of cellular steel beams encased in a multi-layered fl ooring system, which yields an innovative structure with many benefi ts, including reduced construction time and cost. However, a major obstacle to commercialisation is the unknown fi re resistance. Thus, this paper presents a series of non-linear fi nite element models that simulate the structural behaviour of the CBS under standard and parametric fi re conditions. The simulations include single structural elements in isolation and global structure models. Overall, it was found that the CBS performs satisfactorily in a fi re, provided that the integrity of the ceiling system can be maintained. However, signifi cant lateral defl ections up to 185 mm are predicted in a standard fi re, which threatens the integrity of the ceiling. Under parametric fi re conditions, a cooling phase suggests that there is negligible permanent deformation after a fi re, due to the fl exibility of the structure. Ultimately the results are used to make recommendations that: (a) steel end connections are designed to provide negligible moment restraint (b) slotted bolt holes are provided to allow free thermal expansion, and (c) the ceiling system is carefully detailed to accommodate the predicted lateral defl ections, thereby safeguarding the integrity.
Mass and Stiffness Distributions in Optimized Ungrouped Unbraced Frames
2010 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.10 No.3
This paper investigates the distribution of mass and stiffness in multi-storey, ungrouped, unbraced, optimized frames. Ungrouped structures are impractical to design and construct. However, optimized, ungrouped structures suggest how structural systems can be improved, and the loads can be carried more efficiently. The Virtual Work Optimization (VWO) method is used to minimize the weight of the structures considered. A 60-storey structure found in the literature is optimized to compare the distribution of mass and stiffness in grouped and ungrouped configurations. A parametric study of frames subjected to lateral loads, ranging in height from 5 to 30 stories, is carried out. Structures are designed to satisfy both strength and deflection criteria. Three different section databases are used for each case study to investigate whether the nature of discrete sections influences results. When ungrouped frames subject to lateral loads are optimized the total stiffness and mass per floor decrease approximately linearly with decreasing height, followed in some cases by a constant region of mass and stiffness, and a decrease in the foundation region. Distinct patterns emerge where members are stiffened on diagonal paths across the width of the structure. The distribution of mass in the frames suggests truss or megabrace behaviour.
