        Retrospective long-term analysis of bone level changes after horizontal alveolar crest reconstruction with autologous bone grafts harvested from the posterior region of the mandible

        Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term success of horizontal alveolar crest augmentation of the retromolar region of the mandible with particulated bone, as well as factors affecting subsequent peri-implant bone loss. Methods: A total of 109 patients (68 female, 41 male) suffering from alveolar ridge deficiencies of the maxilla and mandible were included in this study. All patients were treated with particulated retromolar bone grafts from the mandible prior to the insertion of endosseous dental implants. Mesial and distal peri-implant crestal bone changes were assessed at six time points. Several parameters, including implant survival and the influence of age, gender, localisation of the implant, diameter, covering procedures, and time points of implant placement, were analysed to identify associations with bone level changes using the Mann-Whitney U-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient. Results: A total of 164 dental implants were placed in the maxilla (n=97) and in the mandible (n=67). The mean observation period was $105.26{\pm}21.58$ months after implantation. The overall survival rate was 97.6% after 10 years. Overall, peri-implant bone loss was highest during the first year, but decreased over time. The mean amount of bone loss after 10 years was 2.47 mm mesially and 2.50 mm distally. Bone loss was significantly influenced by implant type and primary stability. Conclusions: The use of particulated autologous retromolar bone grafts is a reliable technique for the horizontal reconstruction of local alveolar ridge deficiencies. Our results demonstrate that implants placed in augmented bone demonstrated similar bone level changes compared to implants inserted in non-augmented regions.

        Renewable Energy Strategies Leading to Closer Europe-Japan Cooperation after 3/11

        The EU and Japan have intensified its cooperation and a broad range of fields since the early 1990s. Political, industrial and academic cooperation in the area of science and technology including in the improvement of new technologies to production of energy had become one core element since the early 1990s, and even more so with the 2001 EU-Japan Action Plan. The 3/11 disaster and the post-Fukushima energy future promise another area of cooperation, namely in dealing with the global energy crisis. Despite common interests between Japan and many European countries and the EU in regard to energy policy, research and development in nuclear safety and renewable energy resources, post-3/11 cooperation between Japan and European countries remained far from optimal. In the immediate post-disaster period, it was the initiatives of businesses and R&D interests rather than national government initiatives that provided first evidence that cooperation between Japan and the EU and individual EU member states might become more prominent in the face of a global energy crisis. This article analyzes the changes in bilateral and multilateral relations of the EU and some of its member states with Japan, and asks whether 3/11 can act as a trigger for the development of a joint Japanese-European energy strategy.

        Swelling modification by electron beam at chalcopyrite copper indium gallium diselenium thin-film controlled optical features

        Electron beam effect on swelling at the sol-gel derived thin film has been examined for chalcopyrite copper indium gallium diselenium thin-film semiconductor nanolayers with optical pransparent features. The copper indium gallium diselenium layers with the optical transparent features were irradiated by negatively charged electron beam which was emmited from Sr-90 radioisotope with 2.86 mCi activity. The swelling was the important parameters to use this thin film at the optoelectronic layers that have affected the safety and operating life of the equipments and systems in nuclear applications.

        Microscopic Origin of the Near-Band-Edge Emission in Aqueous Chemically-Grown ZnO Nanorods

        The microscopic origin of the near-band-edge emission in low-temperature aqueous chemicallygrown ZnO nanorods is analyzed. For the as-grown nanorods, a broad and almost featureless main emission band at 3.366 eV is observed due the presence of a high donor and defect density. After the nanorods have been annealed at 800 ℃ for 1 hour in an oxygen atmosphere, a remarkable reduction of the linewidth of the near-band-edge emission from 10 meV to 4 meV is observed. Sharp and distinguishable excitonic transitions are visible. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show very fast recombination times of 11 ps for the as-grown sample while the radiative recombination time increases to 80 ps after the sample is annealed in oxygen atmosphere.

        Near-Band-Edge Photoluminescence Spectroscopy of ZnO Nanowires Embedded in Polymers

        We report on studies of the low-temperature photoluminescence of ZnO nanowires embedded in different polymers. The spectra of as-grown and embedded ZnO nanowires are compared. We observe a decrease of the deep-level emission and an increase of the near band-edge emission after the embedding process. The near-band-edge emission of the embedded ZnO nanowires is dominated by a surface exciton band. To explain the spectral changes, we propose a model.         Reproductive Fitness and Dietary Choice Behavior of the Genetic Model Organism Caenorhabditis elegans under Semi-Natural Conditions

        Laboratory breeding conditions of the model organism C. elegans do not correspond with the conditions in its natural soil habitat. To assess the consequences of the differences in environmental conditions, the effects of air composition, medium and bacterial food on reproductive fitness and/or dietary-choice behavior of C. elegans were investigated. The reproductive fitness of C. elegans was maximal under oxygen deficiency and not influenced by a high fractional share of carbon dioxide. In media approximating natural soil structure, reproductive fitness was much lower than in s tandard laboratory media. I n seminatural media, the reproductive fitness of C. elegans was low with the standard laboratory food bacterium E. coli (${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria), but significantly higher with C. arvensicola (Bacteroidetes) and B. tropica (${\beta}$-Proteobacteria) as food. Dietary-choice experiments in semi-natural media revealed a low preference of C. elegans for E. coli but significantly higher preferences for C. arvensicola and B. tropica (among other bacteria). Dietary-choice experiments under quasi-natural conditions, which were feasible by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of bacteria, showed a high preference of C. elegans for Cytophaga-Flexibacter-Bacteroides, Firmicutes, and ${\beta}$-Proteobacteria, but a low preference for ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria. The results show that data on C. elegans under standard laboratory conditions have to be carefully interpreted with respect to their biological significance.

        The development of an easily upscalable method for the preparation of nanosized phosphors is reported, which comprises a simplified precipitation method for the synthesis of lanthanide (Ln)-doped Y2O3 nanoparticles (NPs). Co-doping the Y2O3 NPs with Tb3+ and Eu3+ led to a gradient of the emission color, this adjustment is very important for applications. The influence of different synthesis parameters on the mean particle size and the size distribution was unravelled and the toxicity of aminosilane functionalized and neat NPs was investigated.
