      • Approaching professional ethics and conduct in business interpreting training

        Francisco J. Vigier-Moreno,Carmen Torrella-Gutiérrez 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 2022 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 학술대회 Vol.2022 No.01

In a world where countless companies seize the opportunity of selling or buying abroad, or of finding strategic partners no matter the nation, business internationalization represents a key pillar for the economy. This transnational connection not only pertains to the economic field, but also to the language one, as internationalized businesses, to a greater or lesser degree, require language and cultural mediation for commercial relations to be built with partners and customers in and from different parts of the world. Companies are known to lose business opportunities due to the lack of language skills and intercultural competence, and having in-house personnel with language skills –or outsourcing translation and interpreting services– has been reported to be undoubtedly linked to successful international business performance. This has subsequently boosted the demand for language services in the business sector both face-to-face and remotely, especially as accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, language-based posts related to internationalized businesses have become a clear careers opportunity for a remarkable number of graduates in the four-year undergraduate degree in Translation and Interpreting taught in Spanish universities. Business Interpreting can be defined as a type of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural mediation that allows a business operation to be undertaken between two or more individuals who speak different languages but share common ground in terms of commercial interests and objectives. Thus it is a complex activity that requires flexible and high-performing professionals, since it is characterized by the rich diversity in terms of scenarios, subject matter and interpreting modes that it may entail. Interpreting training must be therefore aimed at equipping students with the skills and abilities that will make them fit for successfully interpreting in internationalized business operations, which include language competence, professional protocols, thematic competence, professional ethics, etc. Frequently, business interpreting training focuses greatly on the development of language competence, thematic competence, and interpreting skills, but somehow overlooks other elements such as professional ethics and conduct, which are especially relevant for business interpreters as, unlike other interpreting settings, issues such as impartiality and wholeness may conflict with the interests and needs of the company that hires the interpreter. In this proposal, we purport to illustrate how examples of such controversial cases extracted from a real interpreter-mediated business meeting corpus can be applied to business interpreting training by introducing them in semi-scripted role-plays used in training sessions. Our aim is for trainee interpreters to be exposed to such situations and collaboratively explore and expound different options that both allow for the transfer of the message and adhere to professional principles.

Variation of lithium isotope geochemistry during basalt weathering and secondary mineral transformations in Hawaii

        Ryu, J.S.,Vigier, N.,Lee, S.W.,Lee, K.S.,Chadwick, O.A. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2014 Geochimica et cosmochimica acta Vol.145 No.-

Lithium isotopes are a potential tracer of silicate weathering but the relationship between lithium isotope compositions and weathering state still need to be established with precision. Here, we report Li concentrations and Li isotope compositions of soils developed along a 4 million year humid-environment chronosequence in the Hawaiian Islands. Li concentrations are variable with depth and age, ranging from 0.24 to 21.3ppm, and significant Li depletions (up to 92%) relative to parent basalts are systematically enhanced towards the surface. Our calculations show that the relative contribution from atmospheric deposits to the Li soil budget remains small, with a maximum contribution from dust Li of 20% at the oldest site. This is explained by the capacity of the weathering products to retain, within the profiles, the Li coming from basalt alteration, and allows us to explore more specifically the role of alteration processes on soil Li isotope signatures. The δ7Li values display a large range between -2.5%% and +13.9%%. The youngest soils (0.3ka) display the same δ7Li value as fresh basalt, regardless of depth, despite ~30% Li loss by leaching, indicating that there is little Li isotope fractionation during the incipient stage of weathering. δ7Li values for the older soils (≥20ka) vary non-linearly as a function of time and can be explained by progressive mineral transformations starting with the synthesis of metastable short-range order (nano-crystalline) minerals and followed by their transformation into relatively inert secondary minerals. Results highlight significant Li isotope fractionation during secondary mineral formation and in particular during Li uptake by kaolinite. Finally, we suggest that the non-monotonous evolution of the regolith δ7Li value over the last 4Ma is consistent with climatic variations, where congruent release of Li isotopes occurs during warmer periods.

        Euna Park(박은아),Jieun Han(한지은),Hojin Choi(최호진),Prie Yannick,Toinon Vigier,Samuel Bluteau,Gyu Hyun Kwon(권규현) 대한인간공학회 2020 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2020 No.10

Objective: This study aims to develop a measurement tool for the shifting ability as an Executive Functions (EF) in Virtual Environment (VE) based on the theory of embodied cognition. Background: Most of conventional EF measurement tools show an 18-20% difference between measured value through the questionnaires and ability of daily practices, which leads to dysfunctional problems in everyday life. Method: We designed a shifting measurement tool in VE. A measurement tool was developed by creating the scenario for organizing books on a bookshelf according to specific rules through an expert-based evaluation in a VE. (Color, Shape, Category) Using this measurement tool, we gained the tasks score data, duration, and the behavioral data of hand and head from 12 healthy adults(20-30s) and analyzed the data. Results: Using this Shifting measurement tool, we gain the behavioral data of hands and head, and tasks scores data from 12 participants. It is compared with the behavioral data of hand and head movement according to the task score. Conclusion: Findings of this study could be used to evaluate existing measurements and enhance a newly developed shifting measurement tool.

      • 체화된 행동 패턴 탐색을 위한 Color-category Interference 기반의 VR 시스템 개발 : 실행 기능의 억제 능력과 메를로 퐁티의 지각의 현상학을 중심으로

        조인령(Inryeong Jo),한지은(Jieun Han),최호진(Hojin Choi),Prie Yannick,Toinon Vigier,Samuel Bluteau,권규현(Gyu Hyun Kwon) 대한인간공학회 2020 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2020 No.10

The purpose of this study is to develop a scenario for deriving scientifically explanatory behavioral data on the phenomenon that inhibitory ability is embodied as behavior in real life context and to develop a virtual reality system to systemize it. When the inhibition among executive function is decreased, self-control in real life becomes difficult, leading to various behavioral disorders and negative psychological states. Traditional Stroop tests, known as tools to assess them, have low ecological validity and report results that do not match the actual performance of individuals in real life. In order to create a scenario that reflects the real life context as a method of evaluating the ecological deterrence ability, we reviewed the literature on behavioral phenomena in which cognitive ability was embodied, and developed a VR system that applied dynamic stimulation and interaction using virtual reality. This VR system is an application study to develop a tool to evaluate the performance of inhibition ability seen in real life ecologically. It is expected that various behavioral data can be discovered by physically systematizing phenomenological behavior that is the basis of embodied cognitive theory in virtual environment.

Objective: This study aims to measure working memory and decision-making ability in the enhanced virtual mall environment based on the embodied cognition theory. Background: Various technologies have been emerged to allow more precise measurements of patients" behavioral data. Therefore, we have developed the Virtual Mall environments based on the embodied cognition theory, to provide the possibilities of evaluation indicators other than those given by the traditional neuropsychological tests in the virtual environments. Method: Based on field observation, we developed the self-checkout system to measure the executive functions, and the results of performance were categorized by MET tests. Finally, we evaluated the possible form of clinical programs based on professional comments by the HCI and medical experts. Results: Four HCI experts reviewed eight elements of usability, and five medical experts assessed the potential of this program as a clinical purpose. Conclusion: This suggests that the self-checkout system developed in this study has potential as a clinical program. Application: These results of this study will be useful as a foundational work to create the VR scenarios and VR environment in neuropsychological tests for the measurement of working memory and decision making.

        Chaeyoung Jeon(전채영),Jieun Han(한지은),Hojin Choi(최호진),Prie Yannick,Toinon Vigier,Samuel Bluteau,Gyuhyun Kwon(권규현) 대한인간공학회 2020 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2020 No.10

Objective: The aim is to develop a system that can measure the executive functions in daily life away from the classical executive functions measurement system. Background: The Tower of London test, one of the classics of executive functions tests, is mainly used to measure planning. Although it is available for all ages and has the advantage of being able to analyze various factors, it also has the same disadvantages as many accompanying sub-tests. Thus, we improved and developed a Measuring System for the Executive Functions in Virtual Kitchen Environment. Design: The system has a scenario like "You have to clean up the kitchen before your friend comes.!" On the kitchen table is a post-it with the name of the kitchenware, and various kitchenware. Users should clean up the kitchen as soon as possible and ticktack sounds are played to make the situation aware. The Data collect the number of movements (grab, release times), the time is taken, the moving distance in the kitchen, data on the trajectory of the hand, and the number of matches between words and objects. Results: An expert evaluation was conducted. The advantage of being able to measure planning in daily life from a medical perspective and the proper VR environment setting from an HCI perspective have been verified. Conclusion: Development of the measuring system for the executive functions in a virtual kitchen environment is of significance to be able to measure executive functions based on actual daily life. Application: This work was supported by Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion(IITP) grant funded by the Korean Government(MSIP) (No. 2019-0-01569, Development of VR and IoT-based Systems for Evaluation of Embodied Cognition)
