Lycopene and Tomato Sauce Improve Hepatic and Cardiac Cell Biomarkers in Rats

Vanessa Azevedo de Jesuz,Monique de Barros Elias Campos,Vanessa Rosse de Souza,Teresa Palmiciano Bede,Bianca Portugal Tavares de Moraes,Adriana Ribeiro Silva,Cassiano Felippe Gonc¸alves de Albuquerque 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.11

This study evaluated the effects of tomato sauce and lycopene on hepatic and cardiac cell biomarkers in rats fed a high-fat diet. Animals were split into five groups: control group, high-fat group (HG), high-fat tomato sauce group, high-fat lycopene 2 mg, and high-fat lycopene 4 mg. Food and water were offered ad libitum, whereas tomato sauce and lycopene (2 and 4 mg/day) were offered daily for 60 days. Body, heart, and liver weights, cardiosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, and serum parameters were also analyzed in rats. The animals' hearts and liver were processed, and cells were examined by flow cytometry. Results showed that the groups receiving tomato sauce and lycopene had lower glycemia. The serum concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, hepatic enzymes, and tumor necrosis factor-α did not change upon treatment. Tomato sauce and lycopene supplementation did not increase interleukin-1β in response to a high-fat diet. Cell cycle analysis of cardiac and liver cells showed a lower percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase and an increase in the G2/M phase in HG. Both lycopene and tomato sauce reversed this effect. Both lycopene and tomato sauce reversed this effect and prevented high-fat diet-stimulated cardiac and liver cell death. Supplementation of tomato sauce and lycopene showed beneficial effects on cardiac and liver cell metabolism; therefore, it is suggested as a nutritional approach for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis.

      • Local Residents Expression of Dissatisfaction with Tourism and Events. An Empirical Study Based on Winchester (UK)

        ( Vanessa Gowreesunkar ),( Hugues Seraphin ),( Mustafeed Zaman ),( Marco Platania ) 한국문화관광학회 2018 문화관광연구 Vol.20 No.2

Purpose - Our objective is twofold: First, to identify what can cause local residents dissatisfaction with events and tourism in rural communities. Second, show that the level of happiness of the local residents can mitigate their dissatisfaction with the tourism industry and event development. Design/methodology/approach - In terms of methodology, this paper is based on primary data collected using a questionnaire. SPSS has been used to run some descriptive analysis Practical implication - Existing literature discuss mainly the contribution of events and tourism to destinations and local residents as a one-way contribution or impact with events and tourism impacting or contributing to the local community and destination overall. We are arguing that in some cases, the direction of the impact or contribution goes the other way round. It is the resilience of local residents that enable events and tourism to grow and remain. Quality of life or happiness should systematically be used as a metric by DMOs to assess their performance Originality / value - Happiness and/or Quality of Life and tourism are very topical at the moment and still poorly researched. This research paper is therefore going to contribute to the meta-literature in the area. Last but not least, there is absolutely no research paper on tourism and events based on Winchester (UK).

Evaluation of Soybean Methanol Fraction on Acute Inflammation

Vanessa da Silva Carrara,Ciomar Bersani Amado,Juliana Oliveira de Melo,Jose´ Marcos Gontijo Mandarino,Dio´genes Aparı´cio Garcia Cortez 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.12

Soybeans have been of interest of researchers because of the presence of isoflavones, a subclass of flavonoids, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity. The aim of this study was investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanol fraction from soybean, which contains mainly isoflavone glucosides and malonylglucosides. The anti-inflammatory activity of the methanol fraction from soybean was studied using croton oil–induced mouse ear edema and carrageenan-induced pleurisy models. The methanol fraction inhibited the ear edema in a dose-dependent manner: 0.625 mg/kg by 44.23% (P < .05), 1.25 mg/kg by 60.68% (P < .01), and 2.5 mg/kg by 65.68% (P < .01). Myeloperoxidase enzyme activity was reduced at the dose of 2.5 mg/kg (64.79%, P < .05). No effects were seen on carrageenan-induced pleurisy at different doses of the methanol fraction (100 or 400 mg/kg). These results demonstrated that the methanol fraction containing conjugated isoflavones showed topical anti-inflammatory activity. There was no acute toxicity in Swiss mice after oral administration of the fraction, at doses of 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, and 4,000 mg/kg.

‘Fashion it thus’—Construal in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar—

        Vanessa Lim 한국서양고전학회 2023 西洋古典學硏究 Vol.62 No.1

Critics of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar have broadly fallen into two camps: those who see Brutus as the noble, tragic hero of the play, and those who try to correct what they believe to be an idealised view of his character. In many of these readings, commentators (sympathetic or otherwise) have suggested that Brutus’s soliloquy in the orchard―in which he ruminates on the question of Caesar’s assassination―is somehow faulty or defective. What seems particularly troubling is Brutus’s use of ‘common proof’, a strategy of argument which causes his reasoning to appear morally dubious, since it is not based on his personal experience of Caesar but on generalisations about ambition. A rather different picture of the speech emerges when it is contextualised against classical rhetorical strategies of argumentation that were undoubtedly familiar to Shakespeare from his time at grammar school. Read against these strategies, we can see how the speech follows a specific set of rhetorical recommendations that relies on the invocation of general, common, and universally credible arguments to highlight and even exaggerate an individual’s faults. The article reconstructs these recommendations from rhetorical handbooks such as Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria, Cicero’s De inventione, and Aphthonius’s Progymnasmata and offers a close reading of the speech from Shakespeare’s play. It argues that paying attention to these rhetorical strategies can help us to better understand the movement of thought in the speech and what exactly it is that Brutus aims to accomplish with his arguments. As I hope to show, it may also even illuminate certain choices in terms of Shakespeare’s characterisation of Caesar.

      • CALCULATION OF WIND TURBINE NEEDED IN PROVIDING SUFFICIENT ELECTRICAL POWER - AT EDENVILLE COUNTRYHOMES SUBDIVISION, TUGBONGAN, CONSOLACION, CEBU, PHILIPPINES

Vanessa Ruth Baylon 국제과학영재학회 2014 APEC Youth Scientist Journal Vol.6 No.2

Wind turbines use the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into either mechanical or electrical energy. A wind turbine is an environmental-friendly way of generating power. This study is done to calculate the necessary size of wind turbine application to provide sufficient electrical power to the Edenville Countryhomes subdivision at the Philippines. The total power consumed by the entire subdivision was calculated as well as the average wind speed in the area, the density of air, and the wind turbine power coefficient. The calculation used and manipulated is the Power in the Wind equation. It was found that the Edenville Countryhomes would need a wind turbine with a radius of 13 meters altogether in order to generate sufficient electrical power.

Magnetic Field Interactions of Copper-Containing Intrauterine Devices in 3.0-Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging: In Vivo Study

        Vanessa Berger-Kulemann,Henrik Einspieler,Nilouparak Hachemian,Daniela Prayer,Siegfried Trattnig,Michael Weber,Ahmed Ba-Ssalamah 대한영상의학회 2013 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.14 No.3

Objective: An ex vivo study found a copper-containing intrauterine device (IUD) to be safe for women undergoing an MRI examination at a 3.0-T field. No significant artifacts caused by the metallic implant were detected. However, there are still no in vivo data about these concerns. The aim of this study was to evaluate 3.0-T magnetic field interactions of copper-containing IUDs in vivo. Materials and Methods: Magnetic field interactions and potential adverse events were evaluated in 33 women using a questionnaire-based telephone survey. Two experienced radiologists performed artifact evaluation on MR images of the pelvis. Results: Eighteen patients were eligible for the survey. One patient reported a dislocation of the IUD after the MR examination. All other patients had no signs of field interactions. No IUD-related artifacts were found. Conclusion: MRI at 3.0-T is possible for women with copper-containing IUDs. However, consulting a gynecologist to check the correct position of the IUD and exclude complications after an MR examination is highly recommended. High-quality clinical imaging of the female pelvis can be performed without a loss in image quality.

CMR Parametric Mapping as a Tool for Myocardial Tissue Characterization

        Vanessa M. Ferreira,Stefan K. Piechnik 대한심장학회 2020 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.50 No.8

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the current gold standard for imaging cardiac anatomy, function, and advanced myocardial tissue characterization. After cine, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), and perfusion imaging, parametric mapping is widely regarded as the 4th era of myocardial CMR development. In contrast to conventional CMR tissue characterization techniques, which rely on relative variations in image intensities to highlight abnormal tissues, parametric mapping provides direct visualization of tissue MR properties such as T1, T2 and T2* in absolute denominations (e.g. in milliseconds). Presentation as pixel-wise parametric maps adds spatial information for a more complete assessment of the myocardium. Advantages of parametric mapping include direct, quantitative comparisons inter- and within-individuals, as well as detection of diffuse disease not evident on conventional CMR imaging, without the need for contrast agents. CMR parametric mapping methods have matured over the past decade into clinical tools, demonstrating not only clinical utility but added value in a wide range of cardiac diseases. They are particularly useful for the evaluation of acute myocardial injury, suspected infiltration and heart failure of unclear etiology. This review discusses the background of parametric mapping, particularly T1-, T2- and ECV-mapping, general magnetic resonance physics principles, clinical applications (including imaging protocols, image analysis and reporting guidelines), current challenges and future directions. CMR parametric mapping is increasingly available on routine clinical scanners, and promises to deliver advanced myocardial tissue characterization beyond conventional CMR techniques, ultimately helping clinicians to benefit patients in their clinical management.

        Swift Observations of GRB 060614

Vanessa Mangano,Giancarlo Cusumano,Daniele Malesani,Guido Chincarini 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.5

GRB 060614 is a remarkable nearby gamma-ray burst (GRB; z = 0.125) observed by the Swift space based observatory, and it has puzzling properties that challenge current progenitor models;its lack of any bright supernova down to very strict limits and its vanishing spectral lags are typical of short GRBs, strikingly at odds with the long (102 s) duration of this event. However, the burst presents optical, UV, and X-ray afterglows in remarkable agreement with standard jetted fireball models. In particular, spectral analysis of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and the X-ray Telescope (XRT) data during the overlap time interval and after shows that the peak energy of the burst decays and crosses the XRT energy band within 500 s from the trigger. The afterglow shows a clear case of jet break, which is simultaneously detected at optical, UV, and X-ray wavelengths, possibly the best among Swift GRBs. Moreover, the Ultraviolet and Optical Telecope (UVOT)light curves possibly show evidence of the passage of the injection frequency across the optical band between 10 and 30 ks from the trigger.
