Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Periprosthetic Joint Infection after Hip Revision Arthroplasty

( Valentino Latallade ),( Carlos Lucero ),( Pablo Slullitel ),( Martin Buttaro ) 대한고관절학회 2023 Hip and Pelvis Vol.35 No.2

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, a well-established opportunistic bacterium, primarily impacts healthcare settings. Infection of the musculoskeletal system with this bacterium is rare. We report on the first known case of hip periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by S. maltophilia. The potential for development of a PJI caused by this pathogen should be considered by orthopaedic surgeons, particularly in patients with multiple severe comorbidities.

      • Design models for predicting the resistance of headed studs in profiled sheeting

        Valentino Vigneri,Stephen J. Hicks,Andreas Taras,Christoph Odenbreit 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.42 No.5

This paper presents the results from reliability analyses of the current Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-1) and AISC 360-16 design models for predicting the resistance of headed stud shear connectors within profiled steel sheeting, when the ribs are oriented transverse to the supporting beam. For comparison purposes, the performance of the alternative “Luxembourg” and “Stuttgart” model were also considered. From an initial database of 611 push-out tests, 269 cases were included in the study, which ensured that the results were valid over a wide range of geometrical and material properties. It was found that the current EN 1994-1-1 design rules deliver a corrected partial safety factor γM * of around 2.0, which is significantly higher than the target value 1.25. Moreover, 179 tests fell within the domain of the concrete-related failure design equation. Notwithstanding this, the EN 1994-1-1 equations provide satisfactory results for re-entrant profiled sheeting. The AISC 360-16 design equation for steel failure covers 263 of the tests in the database and delivers γM *≈2.0. Conversely, whilst the alternative “Stuttgart” model provides an improvement over the current codes, only a corrected partial safety factor of γM *=1.47 is achieved. Finally, the alternative “Luxembourg” design model was found to deliver the required target value, with a corrected partial safety factor γM * between 1.21 and 1.28. Given the fact that the Luxembourg design model is the only model that achieved the target values required by EN 1990, it is recommended as a potential candidate for inclusion within the second generation of Eurocodes.

A GIANT LY<i>α</i>NEBULA IN THE CORE OF AN X-RAY CLUSTER AT<i>Z</i>= 1.99: IMPLICATIONS FOR EARLY ENERGY INJECTION

        Valentino, Francesco,Daddi, Emanuele,Finoguenov, Alexis,Strazzullo, Veronica,Brun, Amandine Le,Vignali, Cristian,Bournaud, Fré,,ric,Dickinson, Mark,Renzini, Alvio,,thermin, Matth American Astronomical Society 2016 The Astrophysical journal Vol.829 No.1

<P>We present the discovery of a giant >= 100 kpc Ly alpha nebula detected in the core of the X-ray emitting cluster CL J1449 +0856 at z = 1.99 through Keck/LRIS narrow-band imaging. This detection extends the known relation between Lya nebulae and overdense regions of the universe to the dense core of a 5-7 x 10(13) M-circle dot cluster. The most plausible candidates to power the nebula are two Chandra-detected AGN host cluster members, while cooling from the X-ray phase and cosmological cold flows are disfavored primarily because of the high Ly alpha to X-ray luminosity ratio (L-Ly alpha/L-X approximate to 0.3, greater than or similar to 10-1000 times. higher than in local cool-core clusters) and by current modeling. Given the physical conditions of the Ly alpha-emitting gas and the possible interplay with the X-ray phase, we argue that the Ly alpha nebula would be short-lived (less than or similar to 10 Myr) if not continuously replenished with cold gas at a rate of greater than or similar to 1000 M-circle dot yr(-1). We investigate the possibility that cluster galaxies supply the required gas through outflows and we show that their total mass outflow rate matches the replenishment necessary to sustain the nebula. This scenario directly implies the extraction of energy from galaxies and its deposition in the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM), as required to explain the thermodynamic properties of local clusters. We estimate an energy injection of the order of approximate to 2 keV per particle in the ICM over a 2 Gyr interval. In our baseline calculation, AGNs provide up to 85% of the injected energy and two-thirds. of the mass, while the rest is supplied by supernovae-driven winds.</P>

METAL DEFICIENCY IN CLUSTER STAR-FORMING GALAXIES AT<i>Z</i>= 2

        Valentino, F.,Daddi, E.,Strazzullo, V.,Gobat, R.,Onodera, M.,Bournaud, F.,Juneau, S.,Renzini, A.,Arimoto, N.,Carollo, M.,Zanella, A. IOP Publishing 2015 The Astrophysical journal Vol.801 No.2

<P>We investigate the environmental effect on the metal enrichment of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the farthest spectroscopically confirmed and X-ray-detected cluster, CL J1449+0856 at z = 1.99. We combined Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 G141 slitless spectroscopic data, our thirteen-band photometry, and a recent Subaru/Multi-object InfraRed Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) near-infrared spectroscopic follow-up to constrain the physical properties of SFGs in CL J1449+0856 and in a mass-matched field sample. After a conservative removal of active galactic nuclei, stacking individual MOIRCS spectra of 6 (31) sources in the cluster (field) in the mass range 10 <= log(M/M-circle dot) <= 11, we find a similar to 4 sigma. lower [N II]/H alpha ratio in the cluster than in the field. Stacking a subsample of 16 field galaxies with H beta and [O III] in the observed range, we measure an [O III]/H beta ratio fully compatible with the cluster value. Converting these ratios into metallicities, we find that the cluster SFGs are up to 0.25 dex poorer in metals than their field counterparts, depending on the adopted calibration. The low metallicity in cluster sources is confirmed using alternative indicators. Furthermore, we observe a significantly higher H alpha luminosity and equivalent width in the average cluster spectrum than in the field. This is likely due to the enhanced specific star formation rate; even if lower dust reddening and/or an uncertain environmental dependence on. the continuum-to-nebular emission differential reddening may play a role. Our findings might be explained by the accretion of pristine gas around galaxies at z = 2 and from cluster-scale reservoirs, possibly connected with a phase of rapid halo mass assembly at z > 2 and of a high galaxy merging rate.</P>

Sacral Nerves Reconstruction After Surgical Resection of a Large Sacral Chordoma Restores the Urinary and Sexual Function and the Anal Continence

        Luigi Valentino Berra,Daniele Armocida,Mauro Palmieri,Valerio Di Norcia,Luca D’Angelo,Massimo Mongardini,Massimo Vigliotta,Edoardo Maccari,Antonio Santoro 대한척추신경외과학회 2022 Neurospine Vol.19 No.1

Objective: Chordomas are slow-growing tumors, with a high tendency to local relapse. En bloc resection is related to the most favorable outcome in terms of survival but is frequently associated with permanent neurological deficits involving sphincters and sexual functions. In the present article, we describe an innovative technique of en bloc resection followed by reconstruction of the sacral nerves with nerve grafts. Methods: The chordoma was excised through a posterior approach after dividing the proximal and distal sacral nerves using the established technique. After that, a microsurgical S2-S3-S4 nerve reconstruction was performed connecting the proximal and distal stumps with sural nerve grafts withdrawn from both lower limbs. Results: Immediately after surgery, the patient experienced complete impairment of sexual function and sphincters with urinary and fecal incontinence. After 6 months, there was a progressive recovery of sexual function and sphincter control. One year after the operation, the patient achieved an adequate sexual life (erection and ejaculation) and complete control of the bladder and anal sphincter. Conclusion: Reconstruction of nerves sacrificed during sacral tumor removal has been shown to be effective in restoring sphincter and sexual function and is a promising technique that may significantly improve patients' quality of life.

      • General template-free strategy for fabricating mesoporous two-dimensional mixed oxide nanosheetsviaself-deconstruction/reconstruction of monodispersed metal glycerate nanospheres

        Kaneti, Yusuf Valentino,Salunkhe, Rahul R.,Wulan Septiani, Ni Luh,Young, Christine,Jiang, Xuchuan,He, Yan-Bing,Kang, Yong-Mook,Sugahara, Yoshiyuki,Yamauchi, Yusuke The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Journal of materials chemistry. A, Materials for e Vol.6 No.14

<P>In this work, we propose a general template-free strategy for fabricating two-dimensional mesoporous mixed oxide nanosheets, such as metal cobaltites (MCo2O4, M = Ni, Zn) through the self-deconstruction/reconstruction of highly uniform Co-based metal glycerate nanospheres into 2D Co-based metal glycerate/hydroxide nanosheets, induced by the so-called “water treatment” process at room temperature followed by their calcination in air at 260 °C. The proposed ‘self-deconstruction/reconstruction’ strategy is highly advantageous as the resulting 2D metal cobaltite nanosheets possess very high surface areas (150-200 m2g−1) and mesoporous features with narrow pore size distribution. In addition, our proposed method also enables the crystallization temperature to achieve pure metal cobaltite phase from the precursor phase to be lowered by 50 °C. Using the 2D mesoporous NiCo2O4nanosheets as a representative sample, we found that they exhibit 6-20 times higher specific capacitance and greatly enhanced capacitance retention compared to the NiCo2O4nanospheres achieved through the direct calcination of the Ni-Co glycerate nanospheres. This highlights another advantage of the proposed strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of the mixed oxide products for supercapacitor applications. Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled using the 2D NiCo2O4nanosheets//graphene oxide (GO) exhibits a maximum energy density of 38.53 W h kg−1, while also showing a high capacitance retention of 91% after 2000 cycles at 5 A g−1. It is expected that the proposed general method may be extended to other transition metal elements for creating 2D mixed oxide nanosheets with enhanced surface areas and improved electrochemical performance.</P>

Visitor's Motivation in Free Food Festivals

        류기상,양은정,Valentino, Emily 한국외식경영학회 2012 외식경영연구 Vol.15 No.1

The purpose of this study was to examine motivations for both intended visitors and accidental visitors in the context of free food festival. The data was collected from the visitors who attended the New Orleans RoadFood Festival, which was free and open to the public. The results of exploratory factor analysis identified four factors (taste, enjoyment, change, and socialization) of attendees’ motivations to the food festival. Multiple regression analysis found that entertainment was a significant antecedent of attendee satisfaction. Results also found attendee satisfaction positively affected their loyalty. Independent samples t-test showed significant differences between accidental visitors and intended visitors in terms of the perceptions about experiencing quality food, learning about a variety of food, experiencing new foods, intention to recommend, and intention to revisit. Practical implications of the findings are further discussed.

Particles and Fields within a Unification Scheme

Francesco Cianfrani,Valentino Lacquaniti,Giovanni Montani 한국물리학회 2010 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.56 No.5

We discuss the properties of particles and fields in a multi-dimensional space-time, where the geometrization of gauge interactions can be performed. For instance, in a 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein manifold, we argue that the motion of charged spinning bodies is obtained in a Papapetrou-like formulation. As far as spinors are concerned, we outline how the gauge coupling can be recognized by using a proper dependence on extra-coordinates and by using the dimensional reduction procedure.

Integration of Forming Operations on Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Systems Based on Fusion Welding

        João P. M. Pragana,Valentino A. M. Cristino,Ivo M. F. Bragança,Carlos M. A. Silva,Paulo A. F. Martins 한국정밀공학회 2020 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.7 No.3

This paper is focused on the integration of metal forming operations in hybrid systems that combine additive manufacturing (AM) by gas metal wire arc and subtractive manufacturing by machining. The investigation is carried out in AISI 316L stainless steel wire and draws from tensile testing to incremental sheet forming of truncated conical shapes. Commercial sheets from the same material are utilized for comparison purposes. Thickness measurements, digital image correlation (DIC), circle grid analysis (CGA) and microstructural and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations are carried out to understand how diff erent is the mechanical behaviour of the deposited metal from that of commercial metal sheets and how signifi cant is the infl uence of the deposited metal microstructure on its overall formability. Results confi rm that integration of metal forming operations in hybrid AM routes is feasible despite the formability of deposited metal being smaller than that of the commercial metal sheets due to the strong anisotropy induced by the dendritic based microstructure of the deposited metal. Incremental forming of two deposited parts also allows concluding that integration of metal forming operations in hybrid AM systems is a step towards green and sustainable manufacturing by extending their fi eld of applicability to the fabrication of complex ready-to-use parts requiring combination of diff erent processes.
