        Hydrothermally synthesized Na<sub>2</sub>Ti<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7</sub> nanotube–V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> heterostructures with improved visible photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen evolution - Its photocorrosion suppression

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>There is still a need to prepare heterostructure photocatalysts with high activity and recyclability but without using precious metals to reduce the cost of photocatalysts. Thus, a facile and simple method for the synthesis of a Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst via hydrothermal synthesis is reported herein. The chemical composition, morphology, and structural features of the photocatalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption–desorption specific surface area analysis (BET), and diffuse reflectance absorption (DRS) methods. It was observed that the specific surface area of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst increased with the incorporation of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB>. The Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst was then used for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated solar light irradiation. The Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst revealed excellent photocatalytic activity and photodegradation kinetics as compared to pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotubes and V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> photocatalysts. Furthermore, both the photoactivity and long-term stability of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst were superior to those of the pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotubes and V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> photocatalysts. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> nanotube–V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> heterostructure photocatalyst can be ascribed to its high specific surface area (283.71 m<SUP>2</SUP>g<SUP>−1</SUP>), mesoporous structure, highly dispersed V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanoparticles, and hindrance of electron–hole pair recombination of Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> due to the V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> incorporation, which is proven by the photoelectrochemical results, including photocurrent and electron impendence spectroscopy results. In addition, during the study of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, the hydrogen yield of the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB>/V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> nanocomposite was 1.83 times that of pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB>, which also exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Heterojunction of Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> NTs/V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> NPs was developed via hydrothermal method. </LI> <LI> Visible photocatalytic RhB degradation studies were performed over Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> NTs/V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> NPs. </LI> <LI> Improved degradation efficiency was observed over Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> NTs/V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> NPs when compared to pristine Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> NTs. </LI> <LI> V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> NPs were successfully utilized as cocatalyst for pollutant degradation. </LI> <LI> Charge recombination was diminished in the Na<SUB>2</SUB>Ti<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7</SUB> NTs by the addition of V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> NPs. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Effect of Buffalo Follicular Fluid Alone and in Combination with PMSG and M199 on in vitro Buffalo Oocyte Maturation

        The effect of replacement of in vitro maturation medium completely with the buffalo follicular fluid (buFF) on in vitro oocyte maturation of buffalo oocytes was studied. 5 to 8 buffalo cumulus oocyte complexes were cultured in a single drop with each of the eight media studied i.e., M199+steer serum (10% v/v), M199+steer serum (10% v/v)+PMSG, M199+buFF (10% v/v), M199+buFF (10% v/v)+PMSG, M199+buFF (50% v/v), M199+buFF (50% v/v)+ PMSG, buFF (100%) and buFF+PMSG at $39^{\circ}C$ and 5% $CO_2$ in air for 24 h. Supplementation of M199 with Steer serum alone resulted in IVM rate of 35% only. When the above medium was supplemented with PMSG, the maturation rate rallied to 82%. Significant increase in the maturation rates were observed when M199 was supplemented with increasing levels of buFF. A further increase in the maturation rate was also obtained when PMSG was incorporated into the medium of M199 supplemented with buFF. The rate of maturation was to the tune of 91% when oocytes were matured in buFF alone which was increased non significantly on the addition of PMSG. Highest maturation rate (97%) obtained with M199+buFF (50%v/v)+PMSG did not differ significantly from that obtained by either M199+buFF (10%v/v)+PMSG or buFF+PMSG. It is suggested that buFF alone without any supplementation can form the effective in vitro maturation medium for buffalo oocytes.

        Role of Bacillus subtilis VSG4-derived biosurfactant in mediating immune responses in Labeo rohita

        <P>This study aimed to isolate biosurfactant from CO2-sequestering Bacillus subtilis VSG4 and to evaluate its immunostimulatory effect in Labeo rohita fingerlings. Fish were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with 0.1 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing the water-soluble fraction of purified biosurfactant at 50 (S50), 100 (S100), 200 (S200), or 300 (S300) mu g mL(-1). Fish injected with PBS served as controls. Various immunological parameters, including immune-related gene expression, were measured at 14, 21, and 28 days post administration (dpa). At 28 dpa, the.fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and mortality was recorded up to 14 days. Among the immune parameters tested, lysozyme levels (36.32 +/- 1.79 U mL(-1)), alternative complement pathway activity (76.26 +/- 2.18 U mL(-1)), phagocytic activity (32.18 +/- 0.67%), and serum bactericidal activity (73.2 +/- 4.7%) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the 5200 group at 21 dpa than in the controls. Respiratory burst activity (0.386 +/- 0.008 OD630nm) was the highest in the 5200 group at 28 dpa. Of the immune-related genes examined, pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta) were significantly down-regulated in the S200 and 5300 groups. Expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-beta) as well as IKB-alpha was higher (P < 0.05) in the S100-S300 groups at 21 dpa. The expression of NF-kappa B p65, IKK-beta, MAPKp38, and Myd88 was down-regulated in the treated groups when compared to the controls. Fish in the 5200 group exhibited the highest post challenge relative survival rate (67.88%). Collectively, these results suggest that secondary metabolite (biosurfactant) isolated from B. subtilis VSG4 at 200 mu g mL(-1) can positively influence immune responses, enhance disease resistance, and stimulate immune-related gene expression in L rohita.         IMPACT BEHAVIOR MODELING OF MOTORCYCLE FRONT WHEEL-TIRE ASSEMBLY

        Experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of certain parameters that affect the impact response of the motorcycle front wheel-tire assembly under various impact conditions. Impact tests were conducted according to 2V 5–1 fractional factorial design using a pendulum impact test apparatus with impact speed, impact mass, tire inflation pressure level, striker geometry, and impact location as design factors. Significant factors influencing the response of the wheel-tire assembly were identified. Coefficients for each factor were also determined, and empirical models were then developed for each response. An analysis indicates that the developed models fit well within the experimental ranges of the respective factors. However, for several interaction effects, the models become unrealistic, whereby they give certain deformation values when approaching zero impact mass and/or zero impact velocity. This is not consistent with the mechanics of the physical world, as there should not be any significant deformation when delivered impact energy is small enough. Efforts have been made in developing better models to resolve the inconsistency and to include a wider range, especially considering the case of the lower limit of experimental factors, which are an impact mass of 51.18 kg and/or an impact velocity of 3 m s−1 (10.8 km/h) down to zero. The minimum amount of impact energy required to produce the onset of observable deformation on the wheel was incorporated in the development of new models. Finally, the present models have been developed not only to cover the lower regions but also to range up to the upper limits of the factors, which are an impact mass of 101.33 kg and an impact velocity of 6 m s−1 (21.6 km/h).         Rheological Characterization of Hydrogen Peroxide Gel Propellant

        An experimental investigation on the rheological behavior of gelled hydrogen peroxide at different ambient temperature (283.15, 293.15 and 303.15 K) was carried out in this study. The gel propellant was rheologically characterized using a rheometer, in the shear rate ranges of 1 to 20 s<SUP>-1</SUP>, and 1 to 1000 s<SUP>-1</SUP>. Hydrogen peroxide gel was found to be thixotropic in nature. The apparent viscosity value with some yield stress (in-case of shear rate 1 to 20 s<SUP>-1</SUP>) drastically fell with the shear rate. In the case of the shear rate range of 1 to 20 s<SUP>-1</SUP>, the apparent viscosity and yield stress of gel were significantly reduced at higher ambient temperatures. In the case of the shear rate range of 1 to 1000 s<SUP>-1</SUP>, no significant effect of varying the ambient temperature on the gel apparent viscosity was observed. The up and down shear rate curves for hydrogen peroxide gel formed a hysteresis loop that showed no significant change with variation in temperature for both the 1 to 20 s<SUP>-1</SUP> and the 1 to 1000 s<SUP>-1</SUP> shear rate ranges. No significant change in the thixotropic index of gel was observed for different ambient temperatures, for both low and high shear rates. The gel in the 1 to 20 s<SUP>-1</SUP> shear rate range did not lead to a complete breakdown of gel structure, in comparison to that in the 1 to 1000 s<SUP>-1</SUP> shear rate range.

      • Catalytic performance of vanadia-doped titania-pillared clay for the selective catalytic oxidation of H<sub>2</sub>S

        A series of vanadia-doped titania pillared clay (V/Ti-PILC) with various amounts of vanadia were prepared and their performance for the selective catalytic oxidation of H<SUB>2</SUB>S was investigated in this study. V/Ti-PILCs were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET apparatus, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). V/Ti-PILCs showed better catalytic performance than as such Ti-PILC at temperatures ranging from 220 to 300<SUP>o</SUP>C without any considerable SO<SUB>2</SUB> emission. The H<SUB>2</SUB>S conversion over V/Ti-PILC increased with increasing vanadia content up to 5wt.%. This superior catalytic performance might be related to the uniform dispersion of vanadia in the form of monomeric and polymeric species. However, it decreased at 10wt.% vanadia loading due to the decrease of surface area and to the formation of crystalline V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> phase. The presence of water vapor in the reactant mixture resulted in the decrease of the H<SUB>2</SUB>S conversion.

        Measurement of the relative yields of ψ(2S) to ψ(1S) mesons produced at forward and backward rapidity in p+p , p+Al , p+Au , and He3+Au collisions at <sub>sNN</sub>=200 GeV

        <P>The PHENIX Collaboration has measured the ratio of the yields of psi(2S) to psi(1S) mesons produced in p + p, p + Al, p + Au, and He-3+Au collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV over the forward and backward rapidity intervals 1.2 < | y | < 2.2. We find that the ratio in p + p collisions is consistent with measurements at other collision energies. In collisions with nuclei, we find that in the forward (p-going or He-3-going) direction, the relative yield of psi(2S) mesons to psi(1S) mesons is consistent with the value measured in p + p collisions. However, in the backward (nucleus-going) direction, the psi(2S) meson is preferentially suppressed by a factor of similar to 2. This suppression is attributed in some models to the breakup of the weakly bound psi(2S) meson through final-state interactions with comoving particles, which have a higher density in the nucleus-going direction. These breakup effects may compete with color screening in a deconfined quark-gluon plasma to produce sequential suppression of excited quarkonia states.</P>

        Protective Effects of Sea Spaghetti-Enriched Restructured Pork Against Dietary Cholesterol: Effects on Arylesterase and Lipoprotein Profile and Composition of Growing Rats

        There is a general assumption that seaweeds are hypocholesterolemics and antioxidants. However, controversial results suggest specific properties for each individual alga. This study aims to assess the effect of including Sea Spaghetti alga (S) in a restructured-pork (RP) diet, both enriched and not enriched with dietary cholesterol, on arylesterase (AE) activity and lipoprotein concentration and composition of Wistar rats. Four groups of 10 growing male Wistar rats were each fed a mix of 85% AIN-93M diet and 15% freeze-dried RP for 5 weeks. The control group (C) consumed control RP-C; the S group consumed RP-S with 5% seaweeds; the Chol-C group consumed the C diet but enriched with cholesterol (2.43%) and cholic acid (0.49%); the Chol-S group consumed the S diet but enriched with cholesterol and cholic acid. AE activity was five times higher (P < .01) in S compared with C rats, but three times lower in Chol-S compared with Chol-C rats (P < .01). The Chol-C diet induced hypercholesterolemia but reduced triglycerides (TG), giving rise to the presence of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) that was enriched in cholesterol. The Chol-S diet partially blocked (P < .001) the hypercholesterolemic induction of the Chol-C diet, and reduced TG levels (P < .05) with respect to S rats. The cholesterol supplementation increased total cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, and intermediate-density lipoprotein + LDL-cholesterol (IDL + LDL)-cholesterol (P < .001) in Chol-C rats, but the effect was lower in the Chol-S diet. In conclusion, RP-S increases the antioxidant capacity within a noncholesterol enriched diet while improving the lipoprotein profile within a cholesterol-enriched diet.

        ON A VARIANT OF VERTEX EDGE DOMINATION

        A new variant of vertex edge domination, namely semi total vertex edge domination has been introduced in the present paper. A subset S of the vertex set V of a graph G is said to be a semi total vertex edge dominating set(stved - set), if it is a vertex edge dominating set of G and each vertex in S is within a distance two of another vertex in S. An stved-set of G having minimum cardinality is said to be an γ<sub>stve</sub>(G)- set and its cardinality is denoted by γ<sub>stve</sub>(G). Bounds for γ<sub>stve</sub>(G) - set have been given in terms of various graph theoretic parameters and graphs attaining the bounds have been characterized. In particular, bounds for trees have been obtained and extremal trees have been characterized.
