      • The New Trend in Combatting Unemployment: Earning while Working from Home

        ( Randy A Tudy ) 한국행정학회 2016 한국행정학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.2016 No.-

Unemployment is global phenomenon even among advanced countries. The phenomenon of people working from home is gaining interest for many people, especially those still looking for jobs. The main purpose of this study was to explore on the work experiences of people working from home or the virtual professionals. This study employed a qualitative research design using phenomenological tradition. Twelve participants from different parts of the Philippines willingly responded to the Key Informant Interviews (KII). In terms of how the participants described their life, including the advantages, the findings revealed the following themes: Freedom, Flexibility, Family Time, Learning Experience, Convenience and Financial Advantage. As to the challenges they experienced, Internet Interruption, Distractions, and Less Social Life were the three major themes that came out. For their suggestions to those still looking for jobs, three themes emerged: Online Work, Confidence and Skills Development. The participants were happy with their work, giving the fact that they have more time with their family and enjoy other benefits. The findings of the study were sources of inspiration for those who are still jobless, for parents who want to be with their kids, but still earn a living, and even for people with disabilities (PWD). Indeed, without much government intervention and investment, the virtual professionals are finding jobs and are paving the way for combating unemployment. The implication of the study is for government and other agencies to understand this new phenomenon and to create mechanisms to support and promote it.

Active learning strategy-based reliability assessment on the wear of spur gears

        Hua-Ming Qian,Tudi Huang,Jing Wei,Hong-Zhong Huang 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.12

This study introduces the active learning strategy and Kriging model into the reliability assessment of spur gear wear. First, the wear model of spur gears is constructed based on Archard’s model, and its wear life is approximately estimated. Next, the uncertainty factors affecting the wear life are analyzed and quantified, which causes the reliability problem of spur gear wear. Then, the active learning Kriging model is introduced to estimate the wear reliability for highly efficient and highly accurate computation. Finally, the result analysis for a spur gear is provided, and the relevant results reveal the evolutionary law of spur gear wear depth with working pressure angle. Meanwhile, the wear reliability of spur gears is estimated by different learning functions for comparative analysis, and it is eventually estimated as approximately 99.45 %, which guides decision makers in engineering practice. In addition, Monte Carlo simulation is adopted to validate the accuracy of the estimated wear reliability of spur gears.

      • ABUSED WOMEN SPEAK UP: Motivations and Insights of Women in stopping Domestic Violence

        ( Annie Rose P. Ortiz ),( Randy A. Tudy ) 한국행정학회 2016 한국행정학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.2016 No.-

Violence against women is a global concern. Government laws have been crafted and implemented but abused women continue to suffer and remain silent and fearful. Just like in any other countries, the Philippine government has created a special desk in each municipality under the Municipal Social Welfare Development Office to address the concern of women. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the motivations and insights of abused women to speak up against violence they experience. This study used qualitative phenomenological research design. Ten female participants, who sought help in a particular municipality in the province of Davao del Sur, Philippines, willingly responded to the conduct of Key Informant Interview (KIIs). Results showed that the common motivations of the participants were fear for their life, anger towards their husband, embarrassment, and unbearable physical abuse. When asked about their insights, the following themes emerged: children as inspiration, presence of support groups, and willingness to withdraw. Indeed, it was not an easy ordeal for the participants but with personal courage and the availability of support groups they are able to escape the scourge of hell at the hands of their cruel intimate partners. The implication of the study is for the Municipal Social Welfare Development Office, other agencies and support groups to exhaust available resources and support mechanism to help women experiencing violence get the needed help they want.

A framework for structural reliability analysis based on conjugate sensitivity factor and saddlepoint approximation

Peng Huang,Hong-Zhong Huang,Tudi Huang,Hua-Ming Qian 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.9

A new structural reliability analysis framework is developed to extend the performance of first-order reliability method, which is low robustness and poor accuracy when dealing with highly nonlinear functions. Initially, an improved conjugate sensitivity factor method is proposed to find the most probable point. The method enhances its robustness of convergence by introducing a conjugate gradient direction based sensitivity factor technique and improves its computational efficiency by putting forward a hybrid conjugate gradient factor and an adaptive step length strategy. Subsequently, the dimension reduction-based saddlepoint approximation method is developed, which uses the dimension reduction approach to construct the limit state function as the additive univariate quadratic functions and applies saddlepoint approximation to obtain the result with higher precision. A comparison analysis from five mathematical and structural examples illustrates that the proposed method is better than most existing methods in terms of robustness, efficiency and accuracy for estimating the failure probability of structures.

      • Shifting of Farmers` Interest from Coconut to Other Crops

        ( Socorro Sofia L Pueblo ),( Randy A. Tudy ) 한국행정학회 2016 한국행정학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.2016 No.-

The growth and success in agricultural sector largely depends on the timely and strategic intervention of the government. The Philippines continues to suffer the loss of coconut trees as farmers convert their coconut into other crops. The purpose of this study is to understand the trends in the shifting of interest of farmers from coconut cultivation to other crops in Davao del Norte Province, Philippines. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological research design. Ten farmers, four males and six females who are previous owners and farmers of coconut farms, willingly responded and answered questions during the conduct of Key Informant Interviews (KIIs).Findings of the study showed that the common reasons of farmers from shifting to other crops were the following: freedom from debts, better quality of life, new business entrepreneurship, low price of coconuts, and increased buying power. As to their insights and learning, the participants shared the following: become employees of their own farm, forced conversion to other crops, necessity of government intervention, and availability of credit line. The implication of the study is for the government to aggressively address the problems of coconut farmers and provide immediate remedy and support.

Improved trajectory similarity-based approach for turbofan engine prognostics

        Cheng-Geng Huang,Hong-Zhong Huang,Weiwen Peng,Tudi Huang 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.10

Trajectory similarity-based prediction (TSBP) is an emerging real-time remaining useful life (RUL) prediction method that has drawn considerable attention in the field of data-driven prognostics. TSBP is fast, and the corresponding model is easy to train. However, TBSP only provides a point estimation of RUL, which is insufficient for some specific prognostic applications. Hence, this study introduces an improved TSBP method to handle the issue of prognostic uncertainty. On the basis of an adaptive kernel density estimation technique and β-criterion, the improved TSBP method not only provides an accurate and precise point prediction of RUL but also specifies the confidence interval of RUL prediction. The capability of obtaining the confidence interval of RUL can enhance the TSBP method for uncertainty management. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through two cases studies, which are related to turbofan engine prognostics.
