        Nutritional properties, minerals, and selected heavy metal contents in herby cheese plants of Lamiaceae

        Ten of the most popular and well-known edible plant species from the Lamiaceae which are used in the production of herby cheese were examined to evaluate their nutritional properties, mineral, and heavy metal content. This study has revealed significant variations in the contents of minerals among the studied plant species. The most of plant samples were rich in some of the vital minerals such as Fe, Cu, Ca, K, Mn, and Zn, which are known to be important in health maintenance. Ziziphora capitata plant materials had the highest concentration of toxic heavy metals, including chromium (1.72 mg kg-1), where Mentha longifolia had the highest cobalt (1.14 mg kg-1). The results of this study suggest that the use of these plant species in herby cheese will not contribute to heavy metal toxicity, but may be useful in treating micronutrient deficiency.

        Medical Waste Treatment via Waste Electrospinning of PS

        Body fluid medical wastes are infectious clinical wastes (blood, saliva, urine) due to their high pathogenic content. Incineration is the most commonly used method in waste management that possess high water content along with molecularly dissolved species such as proteins. The process is costly; so that the removal of solid content dissolved in aqueous part by preliminary filtration can reduce the volume of the waste material. In this study, fibrous mats were prepared by electrospinning of PS wastes from DMF and THF solutions. Then they are employed in the removal of protein-based solid contents of body fluid medical wastes before their disposal. Two sources of PS waste (CD cover and Styrofoam) were employed along with virgin PS for comparison. The adsorption capacity of as-prepared electrospun fibers was examined for three model proteins: Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), Myoglobin (MYO), and Trypsin (TRY). The fibers obtained from PS CD wastes have remarkably larger protein sorption capacities (particularly BSA) than the fibers obtained from virgin PS. XPS reveals the presence of CaCO3 domains in CD covers added into PS during their production steps probably to increase mechanical properties. There may be an electrostatic interaction between Ca2+ and the negatively charged groups of the protein. In this way, PS wastes could be converted to a beneficial secondary product by electrospinning and also resulting materials promises for the disposal of body fluid medical wastes. This may be one of the frontiers study on the removal of medical wastes by adsorbents produced via electrospinning of waste polymers.

        Clinical and anatomical importance of foramen magnum and craniocervical junction structures in the perspective of surgical approaches

        This study was conducted to investigate the clinical and anatomical importance of the relevant region from theperspective of surgical approaches by determining the morphometric analysis of the craniocervical junction and foramen magnum (FM) region and determining their distances from important anatomical points. This research was carried out with 59 skulls found at the Anatomy Laboratories of Erciyes and Ankara Medipol University. Metric measurements of FM and condyle, FM shape, condyle-fossa relationship, and pharyngeal tubercle (PT) were made in mm-based dry bone samples of unknown age and sex. The distance between the anterior notches and the FM was 87.01±4.35, the distance between the anterior notches and the PT was 77.70±4.24, the distance between the PT-sphenooccipital junction was 13.23±2.42, and the FM index was 81.86±7.47. The anteroposterior and transverse lengths of FM were determined as 33.80±2.99 and 27.72±2.30, respectively. The morphometric and morphological data available regarding the craniocervical junction showed significant differences between populations. Comprehensive knowledge of this topic will provide a better approach to treat Arnold Chiari Malformation, FM meningiomas, and other posterior cranial fossa lesions. Therefore, we believe that FM and craniocervical junction morphology will be a guide not only for anatomists, but also for radiologists, neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, and orthopedists.

        Application of the Catalyst MnTACN onto Cotton Fabric as a Novel Approach in the H2O2/UV Decolourisation Process

        In this article a novel approach for a catalytic advanced oxidation process using H2O2/UV/MnTACN isinvestigated, for the decolouration of Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) containing wastewater at room temperature. The catalyst 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (MnTACN) was not added to the batch reactor where the advanced oxidation process(AOP) was carried out conventionally, but was first applied to the cotton fabric to form a suitable catalyst carrier with a highspecific surface area. With the given experimental parameters (0.777 g/l H2O2; a mercury (Hg) lamp at 500 W; 40 mg/lsolution of Reactive Blue 4; room temperature), complete decolourisation with the MnTACN catalyst was achieved in only20 minutes. When the MnTACN catalyst adsorbed on the cotton fabrics is introduced into the process as a functional textilematerial, the decolouration of RB4 is much faster, and 100 % decolouration is achieved in 10 minutes. Although pretreatmentof the fabric with acid and/or UV/ozone before application of MnTACN influences the amount of adsorbedMnTACN, the decolouration process is almost unaffected over time. Pre-treatment of fabric with chitosan before theapplication of MnTACN affects the final decolourisation rate and efficiency negatively, and does not act synergistically withthe MnTACN. The same functional fabric with adsorbed MnTACN can be used in at least 5 consecutive AOPs, which makesthe process more environmentally friendly and cost effective, but also opens the possibility to a continuous wastewatertreatment process.

        Non-linear performance analysis of existing and concentric braced steel structures

        Since there are several places located in active seismic zones in the world, serious damages and losses have happened due to major scaled earthquakes. Especially, structures having different irregularities have been severely damaged or collapsed during these seismic events. Behavior of existing structures under several loading conditions is not completely determined due to some uncertainties. This situation reveals the importance of design and analysis of structures under seismic effects. Several non-linear static procedures have been developed in recent years. Determination of the seismic safety of the existing structures and strengthening techniques are significant civil engineering problems Non-linear methods are defined in codes to determine the performance levels of structures more accurately. However, displacement based ones give more realistic results. These methods provide more reliable evaluation possibilities for existing structures with developing computer technology. In this study, non-linear performance analysis of existing and strengthened steel structures by X shaped bracing members with 3, 5 and 7 stories which have soft story irregularity is performed according to FEMA-356 and Turkish Earthquake Code-2007. Damage ratios of the structural members and global performance levels are determined as well as modal properties and story drift ratios after non-linear finite elements analysis for each structure.
