        Giant High-Flow Type Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation: Coil Embolization with Flow Control by Balloon Occlusion and an Anchored Detachable Coil

        Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are often treated by pushable fibered or non-fibered microcoils, using an anchor or scaffold technique or with an Amplatzer plug through a guiding sheath. When performing percutaneous transcatheter microcoil embolization, there is a risk of coil migration, particularly with high-flow type PAVMs. The authors report on a unique treatment in a patient with a giant high-flow PAVM whose nidus had a maximum diameter of 6 cm. A detachable coil, not detached from a delivery wire (an anchored detachable coil), was first placed in the feeding artery under flow control by balloon occlusion, and then multiple microcoils were packed proximally to the anchored detachable coil. After confirming the stability of the microcoils during a gradual deflation of the balloon, we finally released the first detachable coil. The nidus was reduced in size to 15 mm at one year postoperatively.

      • Comparative genomic analysis of Korean and Japanese green tea trees by using molecular markers

        <P> Although green tea is one of the most popular beverages in many countries, the evolutionary origin of Korean and Japanese green tea trees has not been extensively elucidated in a molecular level. Lineages of the five Korean green tea populations and cultivars growing in Hadong area were examined in comparison with the six Japanese and one Chinese cultivars using phylogenetic analysis and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using the non-transcribed region (NTS) region of the 5S rRNA suggested that the Korean Hadong cultivar was a minor variant of the Korean Hadong Cheon-nyeon wild tea plant, which has grown in the Hadong area more than 800 years. RFLP analysis with CAPS markers of the genes in phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway showed that all of the Korean Hadong wild tea populations and cultivar had unique polymorphism patterns, when compared with those of the six Japanese and one Chinese cultivars. In addition, Hadong Cheon-nyeon wild tea showed unique CAPS patterns in the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) locus, indicating that the three CAPS markers in the PAL gene are sufficient to distinguish Hadong Cheon-nyeon wild tea from the others. Thus, our genetic analyses suggested that the Korean Hadong Cheon-nyeon wild tea plant might have evolved as a different lineage from the other wild green tea populations in the Hadong area or the Japanese tea cultivars.         Recently, researches of artificial arms and pointing devices using Electro Myo Gram(EMG) have been actively done. However, EMG is usually measured from a part with comparatively big muscular fibers such as arms and shoulders. Therefore, if we can recognize wrist motions using EMG which was measured from the wrist, the range of application will extend further more. However, when we use the wrist EMG, there are problems that the individual difference is large and its repeatability is low and soon. In this paper, we aim the construction of wrist EMG recognition system that is robust to these problems.

        군기지 이전지 활용에 관한 참여설계과정 - 요코하마 후카야 통신소 이전지 아이디어 공모사업 사례 -

        일본의 요코하마시는 1950년대부터 장기간에 걸쳐 미군기지 반환운동을 실시하였으며, 반환된 이전지를 활용함에 있어서 체계적인 활용계획을 수립하였다. 후카야 통신소는 2004년 반환이 확정된 요코하마 시내의 미군기지 중 하나이다. 후카야 통신소는 원형의 부지형태 및 부지 전체가 국유지라는 활용에 용의한 조건을 갖고 있으며, 이에 요코하마시는 후카야 통신소 이전지 활용에 대해 다양한 시민들의 의견을 수용한 대규모 녹지공간으로 조성하기 위해 아이디어 제안공모사업을 실시하였다. 본 연구에서는 후카야 통신소를 대상으로 참여설계과정을 유도하는 아이디어 공모사업의 추진 배경과 진행과정을 정리하고, 또한 공모전에 참가한 아이디어를 분석하여 이전지 활용에 대한 최근 시민들의 수요를 해석하였다. 요코하마시는 아이디어 공모를 통해서 최근 도시녹지의 기능 및 테마에 대한 시민들의 요구사행에 관해 많은 아이디어를 얻을 수 있었다. 시민들은 후카야 통신소 부지에 녹지 인프라로서 새로운 녹지공간을 창조하는데 많은 관심을 보였다. 또한 아이디어들 중에는 개별녹지의 활용을 넘어 자연과 소통하는 지역의 새로운 라이프스타일을 제안하기도 하였다. 요코하마시는 아이디어 공모사업의 진행과정과 결과를 가능한 많은 시민들이 함께 공유할 수 있도록 '응모-심사-응원-참관-이해'의 다양한 참여 방식을 도모하였다. 후카야 통신소 이전지 활용에 관한 참여설계의 과정은 도시 기반시설로, 다양한 참여설계가 이루어져야 하는 공공사업에 있어서 커뮤니티 설계의 원칙과 프로세스가 구현되어지고 있는 사례라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 후카야의 사례는 이전지 공원화 계획안이 수립된 우리나라의 의정부시 미군기지, 서울시 용산 미군기지에 시사하는바가 적지 않다고 생각된다. 본 연구내용을 바탕으로 할 때, 향후 우리나라의 미군부대 반환지 활용에 있어 시민을 위한 이전지 활용방안을 위해서는 보다 체계적인 이전지 활용계획의 틀, 투명한 절차 및 정보공개, 다양한 참여설계에 의한 협업 과정 등이 중요하다고 하겠다. Since 1950, the city of Yokohama has been demanding the return of US. military base sites in Yokohama. Yokohama has established a systematic utilization plan for these relocation sites. The Fukaya communication site is one of former US. military bases verified for return in 2004. The Fukaya communication site is distinctively circular in shape and is entirely national land. Yokohama took an idea competition to its citizens to create a new park at the relocation of the Fukaya communication site, involving lots of citizen opinion in its utilization goals. This study determined the process of the idea competition at the Fukaya communication site in encouraging civic participation and analyzing citizen demands for the utilization of the relocation site. Through the idea competition, Yokohama city was able to obtain several ideas on the new park from various angles such as the function and shape of the urban open spaces. Citizens showed great interest in creating a park as green infrastructure on the Fukaya communication site. In addition, beyond utilization as an urban open space, many ideas suggested new lifestyles for the region in connection with the natural environment in the vicinity. Yokohama city tried to share the process and results of the idea competition with as many citizens as it could through a variety of means such as Participation, Judging, Support, Observation and Understanding. The case study on the idea competition at the Fukaya communication site is a good example of community design practice in public projects, and is full of suggestions for military bases in Korea, which has just established the plan of utilizing relocation sites as parks. Based on this case study, it can be concluded that it is important to make a systemic form for utilization planning with a clear process, open information and partnership in a variety of participatory design processes in order to ensure maximum civic utilization of relocation sites.

        STS-RFLP법을 이용한 국내지역 재배녹차의 비교분석

        최근 웰빙 열풍으로 나날이 녹차에 대한 관심과 소비가 증가하고, 생산 재배되고 있는 산지에 대한 브랜드화가 진행되고 있다. 하지만 지역에서 재배되고 있는 녹차품종의 구별 및 차이에 대해서는 아직 많은 연구가 되어 있지 않고 있다. 이 연구에서 국내 대표 녹차산지인 하동지역과 보성지역에서 채집한 녹차와 중국과 일본의 대표적 녹차품종을 가지고 STS-RFLP분석을 수행하였다. 페닐프로파노이드 생합성 경로에 관여하는 페닐알라닌 암모니아 리아제와 찰콘 합성효소 그리고 디하이드로플라보놀 4-리덕타아제 유전자의 암호영역과 비암호영역을 사용하여 이들 품종들을 구별할 수 있는 연구에 성공하였다. 이 논문에서는 녹차품종 구별에 사용 가능한 STS-RFLP법과 프라이머를 나타내었고, 하동지역과 보성지역의 녹차품종을 CHS 유전자의 CAPS 마커만으로 구별할 수 있는 방법을 찾아내어, 국내 지역간 품종의 구분 및 검증에 사용할 수 있다는 사실을 제시하였다. Consumption of green tea has increased along with increasing concern regarding healthier lifestyles, and many brands of green tea are sold with a label indicating the region of Korea in which the tea was produced. However, there is little information on identifying the difference between the green tea cultivars according to the region they were grown. Here, 9 green tea cultivars collected from Hadong region, Bosung region, China and Japan were subjected to the STS-RFLP analysis. Using the coding and noncoding DNA regions of genes related to the phenylpropanoid pathway, such as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, chalcone synthase and dihydroflavonol 4-reductase, we have identified the differences between green tea cultivars according to the region they were grown in. In this study, we showed a STS-RFLP method of green tea analysis which easily distinguished different kinds of tea using the primers as described. In addition, we identified that the green tea cultivars from Hadong and Bosung displayed a different profile when PAL intron was digested with Dde I, suggesting that a rapid authentication system for green tea cultivars grown in different regions in Korea is available.

      • A Circle-Based Region-Of-Interest Segmantation Method for Palmprint Recognition

        This paper presents a novel method for optimal Region-Of-Interest(ROI) segmentation for palmprint feature extraction based on the largest inscribed circle. This ensures that the optimal amount of features can be extracted, unlike square-based methods which exclude a substantial area on the outside region of the palmprint image. After position normalization, the middle portion of the palmprint is searched to determine the center from which the largest inscribed circle can be extracted. The circular area is then unwrapped into a fixed-size rectangular strip which is further preprocessed to remove redundancies and then split into seven equal square sub-images. A layered approach is then adopted during the matching stage where each square is successively matched and polled to produce a matching score. Experiments are performed using the "PolyU Palmprint Database" and results show that this is a viable method for palmprint feature extraction, with a recognition rate of above 90% obtained.

        Cytokeratin 13, Cytokeratin 17, and Ki-67 Expression in Human Acquired Cholesteatoma and Their Correlation With Its Destructive Capacity

        Objectives. Cholesteatoma is a nonneoplastic destructive lesion of the temporal bone with debated pathogenesis and bone resorptive mechanism. Both molecular and cellular events chiefly master its activity. Continued research is necessary to clarify factors related to its aggressiveness. We aimed to investigate the expression of Ki-67, cytokeratin 13 (CK13) and cytokeratin 17 (CK17) in acquired nonrecurrent human cholesteatoma and correlate them with its bone destructive capacity. Methods. A prospective quantitative immunohistochemical study was carried out using fresh acquired cholesteatoma tissues (n=19), collected during cholesteatoma surgery. Deep meatal skin tissues from the same patients were used as control (n=8). Cholesteatoma patients were divided into 2 groups and compared (invasive and noninvasive) according to a grading score for bone resorption based upon clinical, radiologic and intraoperative findings. To our knowledge, the role of CK17 in cholesteatoma aggressiveness was first investigated in this paper. Results. Both Ki-67 and CK17 were significantly overexpressed in cholesteatoma than control tissues (P<0.001 for both Ki-67 and CK17). In addition, Ki-67 and CK17 were significantly higher in the invasive group than noninvasive group of cholesteatoma (P=0.029, P=0.033, respectively). Furthermore, Ki-67 and CK17 showed a moderate positive correlation with bone erosion scores (r=0.547, P=0.015 and r=0.588, P=0.008, respectively). In terms of CK13, no significant difference was found between cholesteatoma and skin (P=0.766). Conclusion. Both Ki-67 and CK17 were overexpressed in cholesteatoma tissue and positively correlated with bone resorption activity. The concept that Ki-67 can be a predictor for aggressiveness of cholesteatoma was supported. In addition, this is the first study demonstrating CK17 as a favoring marker in the aggressiveness of acquired cholesteatoma.
