Experimental and numerical verification of hydraulic displacement amplification damping system

        Tracy Sau-Kwai Chung,Eddie Siu-Shu Lam,Bo Wu,You-Lin Xu 국제구조공학회 2009 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.33 No.1

Hong Kong is now recognized as an area of moderate seismic hazard, but most of the buildings have been designed with no seismic provision. It is of great significance to develop effective and practical measures to retrofit existing buildings against moderate seismic attacks. Researches show that beam-column joints are critical structural elements to be retrofitted for seismic resistance for reinforced concrete frame structures. This paper explores the possibility of using a Hydraulic Displacement Amplification Damping System (HDADS), which can be easily installed at the exterior of beam-column joints, to prevent structural damage against moderate seismic attacks. A series of shaking table tests were carried out with a 1/3 prototype steel frame have been carried out to assess the performance of the HDADS. A Numerical model representing the HDADS is developed. It is also used in numerical simulation of the shaking table tests. The numerical model of the HDADS and the numerical simulation of the shaking table tests are verified by experimental results.

      • Evaluating the Impacts of Destination ImagiNation on the Creative Problem Solving Skills of Middle School Students

        Tracy C. Missett,Carolyn M. Callahan,Holly Hertberg-Davis 대한사고개발학회 2013 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.23 No.2

As the development of 21st Century skills, or those skills associated with critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and creative innovation, receive increased attention, research designed to measure the impacts of creativity enhancement programs purporting to teach 21st Century skills becomes important. To examine the impacts of one such program, Destination ImagiNation (DI), on skills associated with creative problem solving, divergent thinking, critical thinking, and teamwork, middle school students who participated in DI during 2009-2010 were compared on multiple measures of creative problem solving against comparable students who had not participated in DI. Students who participated in DI had statistically significant higher divergent thinking, critical thinking, creative problem solving, and teamwork skills than students who had not participated in DI (p < .05). Surveys of DI stakeholders (students, parents, and team managers) support high satisfaction with the program in these areas. Methodological limitations of the study are discussed.

      • THE DECLINE OF THE UK HAND KNIT CRAFT AT THE CLOSE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Tracy Cassidy 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2017 Global Fashion Management Conference Vol.2017 No.07

At the end of the twentieth century the decline of the domestic knitting craft was of paramount concern to the yarn companies and retailers that served this market sector. As demand reduced in the UK so did the number of specialist retailers. This was as detrimental to the yarn companies as it was to the craft. Research undertaken in 1999 by the author suggests that it is probably true to say that the knitting craft was at that point in time at its lowest point of popularity throughout the entire twentieth century. Throughout the twentieth century in the UK the popularity of crafts as domestic leisure pursuits fluctuated. Increased interest is reported to be primarily related to economic recession, where necessity is identified as being the greatest motivation for craft engagement; and craft engagement declines when the economy is more buoyant. There is evidence to support claims that the popularity of crafts in general experienced rise and fall throughout the 20th century correlating with times of austerity during economic downturns, thus suggesting that crafts were still largely taken up then as a necessity which could be contested. This paper reports briefly on the reasons behind the rise and fall of the hand knitting craft’s popularity throughout the last century in the UK before focusing on the latter decades in order to expose the factors related to the more serious decline of the craft in the 1990s. It discloses the perceptions of the craft at the end of the century and provides the foundation for the next stage of the research project which will involve an investigation of the craft in the early decades of the twentieth-first century. The paper draws predominantly on company and trade reports such as Keynote and Mintel and on previously unpublished survey materials from the late 1990s that were designed to explore the state of the hand knit craft at the close of the twentieth century.

      • Rapid development of biosurveillance tools and management tactics for a polyphagous invasive species

        Tracy C. Leskey 한국응용곤충학회 2018 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2018 No.04

The introduction of Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), in the USA and Europe has disrupted many established fruit, vegetable and row crop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. BMSB poses a profound threat to many crops because of its broad host range, strong dispersal capacity, well-concealed overwintering populations, as well as the fact that biological control from native natural enemies has been limited and very few registered insecticides are considered effective. The need for sensitive biosurveillance and monitoring tools in uninvaded and invaded regions, respectively, as well as alternative management tactics to reduce insecticide inputs has been paramount. The identification of the BMSB pheromone, (3S,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol and (3R, 6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol in a 3.5:1 ratio and pheromone synergist methyl (2E,4E,6Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate has rapidly propelled the development of these tools and tactics. Pheromone-baited traps deployed with these stimuli have been evaluated across invaded regions in the USA and Europe and in the native range in South Korea. In every case, traps baited with the combination of the BMSB pheromone and pheromone synergist captured greater numbers of BMSB than traps baited either stimulus alone indicating that these trapping systems can be used for worldwide biosurveillance. Moreover, baited traps have been used as sensitive IPM tools to guide management decisions in affected crops such as apple. Finally, these pheromonal stimuli have served as the basis for successful attract and kill programs in affected crops. While refinement of these tools and tactics continue, their use has resulted in significant reductions in insecticide inputs in apple crops, for example, and successful biosurveillance in newly invaded regions.

Direct Moxibustion to Treat Spleen Qi and Yang Deficiency Fatigue: A Pilot Study

        Tracy L. Thorne,Doug A. Hanes,Heather Wild,Agatha Colbert 사단법인약침학회 2014 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.7 No.2

Limited research suggests that indirect moxibustion may be beneficial for treating fa- tigue, but no studies to evaluate direct moxibustion have been conducted in the United States. Thus, we explored the usefulness of four outcome measures for evaluating the effectiveness of direct moxibustion for patients with spleen qi and yang deficiency fa- tigue (SQYDF). Eleven female volunteers, ages 25e60 years, were enrolled. Three to five rice grains in thread-sized moxa cones were burned on 11 acupuncture points once per week for 8 weeks. Eight participants completed the study. The most common adverse events (AEs) were temporary worsening of fatigue, lightheadedness, and headache. Symptomatic improvement was seen on the SF-36 energy/fatigue scale (p Z 0.003), SF-36 social function scale (p Z 0.008) and Flinders fatigue scale (p = 0.014). The skin conductance at acupoints showed no consistent diagnostic baseline meridian patterns. Heart rate variability data showed an improved low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ra- tio in three of four participants. Direct moxibustion is safe in patients with SQYDF. The Flinders Fatigue Scale (FFS) and the SF-36 are useful outcome measures for evaluating the effects of direct moxibustion, and the heart rate variability (HRV) may be, but the skin conductance did not correlate with SQYDF diagnosis or with symptomatic improvement. How Singapore Companies in Asean Manage Political Risk

Tracy Chan Su Yin,Douglas Sikorski,Louis Ta Huu Phuong 서울대학교 경제연구소 2003 Seoul journal of economics Vol.16 No.1

The Asian crisis served as a reminder to businessmen how fragile the world economic and political scene can be and how dangerous it was to base foreign direct investment decisions on optimistic perceptions of unending economic boom. Perceptions, whether or not they reflect actual realities in the business environment, play a very important role in the investment decisions of many corporations. This study examines the perceptions of decision-makers of Singapore companies operating in ASEAN. What are the sorts of factors that shape their perceptions and help them form a "gut feeling" about the quality of their investments? In particular this study looks at non-quantitative, non-market aspects of investment decisions, generally defined as political risk. Political risk is measured by an assessment of how managers perceive the sociopolitical conditions in the host country and the likely effect on the business climate. Thus, we have attempted to reveal the relative importance of various factors associated with socio-political risk assessment for sample firms operating in ASEAN and the significance of particular risk factors. Likewise, we examined the risk assessment methods and risk management strategies used by Singapore-based companies.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Interventions for Managing Parkinson’s Disease: A Narrative Review

Tracy Lister 대한파킨슨병및이상운동질환학회 2020 Journal Of Movement Disorders Vol.13 No.2

The etiology of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is not fully understood, but environmental toxin overexposure, increased intestinal permeability, and dysbiosis related to nutrition and lifestyle habits are thought to be contributors. Considering these nutrition andlifestyle implications, there is a lack of practice-based programs utilizing interventions for managing symptoms or slowing theprogression of the disease. The purpose of this narrative review was to identify relevant research related to nutrition and lifestyleinterventions for PD, evaluate the research utilizing the evidence analysis process of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to assessthe quality of each research article, and group the research into categories. A grading of recommendations assessment, developmentand evaluation (GRADE) of either good, fair, limited, or not assignable was allocated to each category of research, includingdiet patterns, vitamin D, B-complex, omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, probiotics, physical activity, stress, and sleep. Anintervention based on the research presented in the review may be utilized for coaching people with PD on symptom management
