Morphological and anatomical changes in Lilium cv. Arcachon in response to plant growth regulators

        Karina Torres-Pio,G umercindo H . D e la Cruz-Guzmán 한국원예학회 2021 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.62 No.3

The eff ect of fi ve concentrations of gibberellic acid (GA 3 ), benzyladenine (BA) and paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the morphologyand anatomy of Lilium cv. Arcachon was evaluated. To this end, bulbs were immersed for 24 h with fi ve diff erent concentrations(0, 25, 50, 100 or 200 mg L −1 ) of GA 3 , BA, or PBZ. Then the treated bulbs were immediately sown in 2.5 L potscontaining tezontle. Pots containing bulbs were randomly distributed, kept under greenhouse conditions, and watered withSteiner solution. Morphological and anatomical traits were evaluated at the fl owering phase. The results showed that height(85.3 cm), number of leaves (79.7), and leaf area (743.3 cm 2 ) were not modifi ed by GA 3 , but they diminished in response toBA. In contrast, stems were 80% smaller in response to PBZ but, did not aff ect the number of fl ower blooms. The biomassof bulbs (27.6 g) raised by 32 and 48% in response to BA and PBZ, respectively. The number of vascular bundles and shootphloem area was similar in all treatments, whereas the number of vessel elements increased by 69% when compared withcontrol plants (62 mm 2 vessels). The length of epidermal cells in the leaves decreased between 30 and 48% in response to bothGA 3 and BA, whereas no eff ects were observed in response to PBZ. Mesophyll width was greater by applying PBZ. Finally,PBZ at 25 mg L −1 is enough to reduce the size of stems and improve their appearance as pot plants. Whereas PBZ aff ectssignifi cantly the size of the stems, the BA provoked bud abortion. This research shows in detail how the growth regulatorsmodifi ed the anatomy of the stems and leaves as well as the roots development in Lilium cv. Arcachon plants.

Are Tattoos an Indicator of Severity of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Behavior in Adolescents?

        Marco Antonio Solís-Bravo,Yassel Flores-Rodríguez,Liliana Guadalupe Tapia-Guillen,Aymara Gatica-Hernández,Miriam Guzmán-Reséndiz,Luis Alberto Salinas-Torres,Tania Lucila Vargas-Rizo,Lilia Albores-Gall 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.7

Objective To compare adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury behavior and tattoos [NSSI (T+)] with another group with non-suicidal self-injury behavior without tattoos [NSSI (T-)]. Methods Adolescents (n=438) 42.6% males from the community (M=12.3, SD=1.3), completed the Self-Injury Schedule. Results The lifetime prevalence of tattoos performed with the purpose to feel pain was 1.8%. Compared to the NSSI (T-) group, the NSSI (T+) group was significantly more likely to meet the DSM-5 frequency criteria of 5 self-injury events in 1 year, practice more than one method of self-injury, and topography, more suicidal intentionality, more negative thoughts and affective emotions before, during, and after self-injury and more academic and social dysfunction. Conclusion Adolescents from the community who practice tattooing to feel pain, show a distinct phenotype of NSSI. Health professionals and pediatricians should assess tattooing characteristics such as intention (to feel pain), frequency, and presence of non-suicidal self-injury behavior and suicide intentionality.

Alcohol dehydrogenase 1 participates in the Crabtree effect and connects fermentative and oxidative metabolism in the Zygomycete Mucor circinelloides

        Rosa Angélica Rangel-Porras,Sharel P. Díaz-Pérez,Juan Manuel Mendoza-Hernández,Pamela Romo-Rodríguez,Viridiana Alejandre-Castañeda,Marco I Valle-Maldonado,Juan Carlos Torres-Guzmán,Gloria Angélica Gon 한국미생물학회 2019 The journal of microbiology Vol.57 No.7

Mucor circinelloides is a dimorphic Zygomycete fungus that produces ethanol under aerobic conditions in the presence of glucose, which indicates that it is a Crabtree-positive fungus. To determine the physiological role of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity elicited under these conditions, we obtained and characterized an allyl alcohol-resistant mutant that was defective in ADH activity, and examined the effect of adh mutation on physiological parameters related to carbon and energy metabolism. Compared to the Adh+ strain R7B, the ADH-defective (Adh-) strain M5 was unable to grow under anaerobic conditions, exhibited a considerable reduction in ethanol production in aerobic cultures when incubated with glucose, had markedly reduced growth capacity in the presence of oxygen when ethanol was the sole carbon source, and exhibited very low levels of NAD+-dependent alcohol dehydrogenase activity in the cytosolic fraction. Further characterization of the M5 strain showed that it contains a 10-bp deletion that interrupts the coding region of the adh1 gene. Complementation with the wild-type allele adh1+ by transformation of M5 remedied all the defects caused by the adh1 mutation. These findings indicate that in M. circinelloides, the product of the adh1 gene mediates the Crabtree effect, and can act as either a fermentative or an oxidative enzyme, depending on the nutritional conditions, thereby participating in the association between fermentative and oxidative metabolism. It was found that the spores of M. circinelloides possess low mRNA levels of the ethanol assimilation genes (adl2 and acs2), which could explain their inability to grow in the alcohol.
