It is a stringent challenge to swiftly rehabilitate and strengthen the concrete segments on the metro tunnel that are under the humid environment and vibration fatigue by the locomotives. By means of fatigue experiments under the constant amplitude loading, the repair materials (fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and polymer matrix (PM)) which can be moisture proof and resist the cyclic load are introduced. Hereafter, a fatigue model of tilt’s fulcrum reinforced concrete (RC) segments under constant amplitude loading are proposed by the calibration of S-N curves through these fatigue test. The fatigue model explains for the (a) scope of pre-damage, (b) mechanical properties of the repaired concrete segments, such as the specific rupture times of cycle and stress-crack opening relation, and (c) effective plastic strain behavior of the RC segments. The results show that the purely PM is an excellent candidate for repairing the fatigue loaded damaged RC segment. It (L-4-2) had an average mechanical behavior for cyclic load bearing compared with the remaining specimens. On the other hand, the numerical model predictions had an approximately 96.00% of agreement with the corresponding test results.
Electro-optical switching of graphene oxide liquid crystals with an extremely large Kerr coefficient
Shen, Tian-Zi,Hong, Seung-Ho,Song, Jang-Kun Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2014 NATURE MATERIALS Vol.13 No.4
The sensitive response of the nematic graphene oxide (GO) phase to external stimuli makes this phase attractive for extending the applicability of GO and reduced GO to solution processes and electro-optic devices. However, contrary to expectations, the alignment of nematic GO has been difficult to control through the application of electric fields or surface treatments. Here, we show that when interflake interactions are sufficiently weak, both the degree of microscopic ordering and the direction of macroscopic alignment of GO liquid crystals (LCs) can be readily controlled by applying low electric fields. We also show that the large polarizability anisotropy of GO and Onsager excluded-volume effect cooperatively give rise to Kerr coefficients that are about three orders of magnitude larger than the maximum value obtained so far in molecular LCs. The extremely large Kerr coefficient allowed us to fabricate electro-optic devices with macroscopic electrodes, as well as well-aligned, defect-free GO over wide areas.

Electro-optical switching of graphene oxide (GO) liquid crystals is of great interest owing to its potential applications. However, a GO dispersion undergoes vinylogous carboxylic acidic reaction with time, accompanied by a decrease in pH, which deteriorates the electro-optical performance of a GO cell. We find that the vinylogous carboxylic reaction is hindered in high concentration GO dispersions, and also demonstrate that the deteriorating electro-optical performance can be recovered either by re-cleaning or by ionic neutralization treatment. The electro-optical performance is systematically analyzed in terms of the acidity of the neutralizing solvent, GO dispersion, and supernatant liquid. The best performance is obtained in a GO dispersion with a pH-7 supernatant liquid after neutralization by weakly alkaline water. The neutralization process decreases the bulk conductivity, and also improves the surface conductivity on GO. Approximately 56% of newly generated H+ ions reside near the GO surface, and the rest diffuse away into the bulk solvent. These findings may provide better understanding for the electro-optical switching phenomenon and its applicability. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The recent discovery of structural coloration in aqueous graphene-oxide (GO) dispersions has increased the applicability of carbon-based two-dimensional materials. However, the origin of the photonic band-gap is still poorly understood, and its practical manipulation is still in an early developmental stage. Here, we demonstrate full-color reflection with first-and second-order Bragg reflections in a GO dispersion, and we use two fundamental approaches to manipulate GO photonic crystals, namely, bottom-up and top-down manipulation by controlling the Debye length and using shear or surface fields, respectively. Nanoscopic tailoring of the electrostatic effective thickness and macroscopic smoothing of the curvature of the GO sheet result in similar modifications of the quality and pitch of the photonic crystallinity. Direct observation of the GO particle alignments reveals excellent electrostatic layer-to-layer packing assembly and rather poor in-layer assembly. These results elucidate the mechanism that governs the nematic nature of GO (rather than its lamellar mesophase) and the origin of its photonic crystalline periodicity and provide new methodologies for exploiting these attractive features in actual applications.

Scholars of the Western Jin Dynasty were not as esteemed as their poems. Some of them had been born of poverty and were neglected, such as Zuo Si; others such as Lu Ji and Lu Yun, defects from the Wu Kingdom, were discriminated by the Zhong Yuan people at that time. Except literary societies, there were communities keen on metaphysics during that time, most of whom were clans and literary leaders such as Wang Rong, Wang Yan, Pei Kai, and Yue Guang. But this class left with few works. It can be inferred that literature and metaphysics are two conflicting cultures rooted in the strife between different classes for government positions. Metaphysics pursuers were representatives of nobilities and attempted to dominate culture and authorities to evaluate and select government officials. New class representatives such as Jia Mi, on the other hand, tried to consolidate the multitude, gain reputation with their poems, and resist suppression by the noble class. The “Er Shi Si You” is the likewise outcome of consolidation of new class members and the multitude. Otherwise, differences in cultural characteristics were the cause of Western Jin’s failure to develop metaphysical poetry.

This study aimed to determine the effects of Metschnikowia pulcherrima yeast on storage quality of 'Tainong' mango, and elucidate it's possible anti-disease mechanism. The results showed that M. pulcherrima could inhibit the changes in peel colour, fruit firmness, the contents of total soluble solids, total acid and vitamin C, and maintain the storage quality of mango fruits. An investigation of the mechanism showed that M. pulcherrima competed not only for the primary carbon source, but also for living space with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. In addition, M. pulcherrima promoted the activities of defence-related enzymes, including ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase(GLU) and chitinase (CHT), and secreted a small amount of antimicrobial substances composed of volatile and nonvolatile anti-fungal compounds. The results strongly demonstrated that antagonistic yeast M. pulcherrima could be applied as a biocontrol agent for deducing the spoilage and decay of mango fruit.
Identification and expression analysis of the E2F/DP genes under salt stress in Medicago truncatula

Cell cycle control in plants converges on theRb/E2F/DP pathway, which is regulated by cyclin-dependentkinases. Plants can coordinate their cell cycles duringsalt stress to benefit their growth and development. However, the mechanism underlying cell cycle control undersalt stress is still unclear. Here, we identified five predictedE2F/DP genes in the Medicago truncatula genome, including three E2Fs, one DP, and one DEL. The conserveddomains of the E2F/DP proteins were relativelywell conserved with those of Arabidopsis thaliana andOryza sativa. Intron/exon organization analyses indicatedthat Medtr;E2Fc and Medtr;DPa gained/lost introns in theconserved domains during recent evolutionary process. Furthermore, an expression analysis showed that thesegenes were expressed with varied transcription levels in allof the tissues tested. Contrasting gene expression changesin response to salt treatment in salt-tolerant versus saltsensitivegenotypes indicated that Medtr;DPa might be acandidate gene underlying the salt tolerance. This studywill contribute to the understanding of the E2F/DP transcriptionfactors in M. truncatula and of the mechanismorganizing cell cycle regulation and salt stress.
