        Somatic Embryogenesis: Morphogenesis, Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

        Somatic embryogenesis has become a major tool in the study of plant embryology, as it is possible in culture to manipulate cells of many plant species to produce somatic embryos in a process that is remarkably similar to zygotic embryogenesis. Traditionally, the process has been studied by an examination of the ex vitro factors which influence embryo formation. Later structural, physiological and biochemical approaches have been applied. Host recently, molecular tools are being used. Together, these various approaches are giving valuable information on the process. This article gives an overview of somatic embryogenesis by reviewing information on the morphogenesis, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology of the process. Topics covered include a brief description of the factors involved in the production of embryogenic cells. Carrot cell suspension is most commonly used, and the development of a high frequency and synchronous system is outlined. At the physiological and biochemical lev-els various topics, including the reactivation of the cell cycle, changes in endogenous growth regulators, amino acid, polyamine, DNA, RNA and protein metabolism, and embryogenic factors in conditioned medium are all discussed. Lastly, recent information on genes and molecular markers of the embryogenic process are outlined. Somatic embryogenesis, the best example of totipotency in plant cells, is not only an important tool in studies in basic biology, but is potentially of equal significance in the micropropagation of economically important plants.

        UK Urban Regeneration Policy for Comprtitiveness: A Government Perspective

        The UK Government's approach to how to deliver regeneration in its towns and cities has changed considerably in recent years. Traditionally, urban regeneration policy focused on reversing physical, economic and social decline in an area where market forces would not do this without intervention. Since 2010 urban regeneration has become a vital part of the Government's approach to increasing local growth and competitiveness and building a strong and balanced economy. The current emphasis is on a place-based approach to regeneration that builds on the particular strengths of different places to drive growth and addresses the factors that hold them back. This paper outlines the key features of current UK urban regeneration policy and how interventions to support regeneration and growth are being pursued at different spatial scales to ensure all parts of the country benefit. They include pan regional initiatives like the Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Way, to groups of local authorities operating at a sub regional level (combined authorities/city regions), Local Enterprise Partnerships, and a variety of smaller scale programmes delivering regeneration in areas of economic and social decline. The paper explains some of the policy instruments and funding programmes available to support regeneration, and provides case studies of some major urban regeneration projects that illustrate the new approach including housing and infrastructure improvements like the planned High Speed Rail 2 line. These are supporting regeneration through the creation of strategic partnerships involving government, places and investors. The paper concludes with some lessons from past and future regeneration schemes to improve their effectiveness and impact on places and enhance local growth potential.

        Video production and the cultural Kaleidoscope

        While many programs and teachers have innovative curriculum ideas for developing cross-cultural competency, there still seems to be a tendency to focus on background information such as the geography, history, values, norms, attitudes and lifestyles of the target culture. Teachers assume that this background information will help students to more effectively communicate with people from other cultures. How can teachers properly educate students on the norms, attitudes and lifestyles of countries that are culturally diverse. English speaking countries such as Canada, United states of America, New Zealand, Australia and England are popular destinations for many study abroad programs and to teach students about culture in these countries without stereotypes would be an extreme challenge. To avoid stereotypes, education on the diversity of individual differences in one's own nation seems like an appropriate approach. Educators should approach the teaching of culture by giving students projects that let them discover the different attitudes, norms and lifestyles in their own country. With this understanding of the differences in their own country, students will learn to accept cultural differences while abroad. This paper will analyze culture and suggest how educators can incorporate cultural video projects into their curriculum to increase cultural awareness and facilitate the acculturation process while abroad.

        Designing Study TIME and Online Interaction

        ELearning has the potential to support learning through the use of audio and visual media and an increasing range of tools and software. However research and evaluation of these technologies in use is required in order to ensure that the intended benefits are actually being delivered. The results of research at the Open University UK are presented and reveal that students experience workload challenges that can be addressed by making improvements to the design of courses. Study workload is also an issue in relation to students’ use of online forums and improvements to the design of activities online can lead to improved student participation. The aim of this paper is to discuss the way in which practice can be improved by using tools that help practitioners design the study time of their courses and the online conferencing activities that students are required to do.
