Oxytocin Ameliorates Remote Liver Injury Induced by Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion in Rats

Hekimoglu, Askin Tas,Toprak, Gulten,Akkoc, Hasan,Evliyaoglu, Osman,Ozekinci, Selver,Kelle, Ilker The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2013 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.17 No.2

Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) causes remote liver damage. Oxytocin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective function of oxytocin (OT) in remote liver damage triggered by renal IR in rats. Twenty four rats were randomly divided into four different groups, each containing 8 rats. The groups were as follows: (1) Sham operated group; (2) Sham operated+OT group (3) Renal IR group; (4) Renal IR+OT group. OT ($500{\mu}g/kg$) was administered subcutaneously 12 and 24 hours before and immediately after ischemia. At the end of experimental procedure, the rats were sacrificed, and liver specimens were taken for histological assessment or determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), paraoxonase (PON-1) activity and nitric oxide (NO). The results showed that renal IR injury constituted a notable elevation in MDA, TOS, Oxidative stress index (OSI) and significantly decreased TAS, PON-1 actvity and NO in liver tissue (p<0.05). Additionally renal IR provoked significant augmentation in hepatic microscopic damage scores. However, alterations in these biochemical and histopathological indices due to IR injury were attenuated by OT treatment (p<0.05). These findings show that OT ameliorates remote liver damage triggered by renal ischemia-reperfusion and this preservation involves suppression of inflammation and regulation of oxidant-antioxidant status.

      • Acupuncture as a Complementary Treatment for Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy

Tas, Demet,Uncu, Dogan,Sendur, Mehmet Ali,Koca, Nuran,Zengin, Nurullah Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: Medical treatment for eliminating the side effects of cancer therapy may not always be efficacious. Acupuncture is one of the most widely accepted alternative and complementary therapies in use today. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of acupuncture in patients experiencing cancer treatment side effects, including nausea, vomiting, pain, poor sleep quality and anxiety. Materials and Methods: A total of 45 inpatients who underwent chemotherapy between February and April 2013 in the Oncology Department of Numune Hospital were included in our study. Acupuncture was administered to the patients one day prior to chemotherapy, on the day of chemotherapy and one day after chemotherapy. The patients were evaluated on nausea, vomiting, pain, sleep quality and anxiety before the chemotherapy and on the $4^{th}$ day of chemotherapy. Results: Of the 45 patients included in the study, 18 (40%) were female and 27 (60%) were male. A total of 25 (55.6%) had an elementary school education; 32 patients (71%) had stage 4 cancer and were treated with palliative chemotherapy (the patient characteristics are shown in Table 1). Statistically significant decreases (p<0.001) in pain, nausea, vomiting, insomnia and anxiety scores were observed after the acupuncture treatment compared to baseline. There were no differences in the age, gender, education level, stage or metastasis levels between the patient groups whose symptoms improved or were unchanged. Conclusions: Our study showed that acupuncture has positive effects in cancer treatment patients who experience nausea, vomiting, pain, poor sleep quality and anxiety as side effects of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy-related side effects in cancer patients could be decreased by the concurrent use of acupuncture.

SOME FIXED-POINT RESULTS ON PARAMETRIC Nb-METRIC SPACES

Tas, Nihal,Ozgur, Nihal Yilmaz Korean Mathematical Society 2018 대한수학회논문집 Vol.33 No.3

Our aim is to introduce the notion of a parametric $N_b-metric$ and study some basic properties of parametric $N_b-metric$ spaces. We give some fixed-point results on a complete parametric $N_b-metric$ space. Some illustrative examples are given to show that our results are valid as the generalizations of some known fixed-point results. As an application of this new theory, we prove a fixed-circle theorem on a parametric $N_b-metric$ space.

Microdissected Prefabricated Flap: An Evolution in Flap Prefabrication

Tas, Suleyman Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2016 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.43 No.6

When traditional flap techniques are not feasible, we apply flap prefabrication, which is more complicated and sophisticated but supplies large and thin flaps. There are some disadvantages to the technique that require improvement, such as venous congestion after flap transfer, which requires months for neoangiogenesis and necessitates a vascular carrier. Here, the author presents a new technique, called as 'microdissected prefabricated flap,' to successfully produce a safe, large, and thin flap. This technique is based on the microdissection of the perforators to the greatest extent possible, spreading them out into the subdermal level and using them as a carrier. The details and the application of this technique are presented and reported.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Cognitive Functions and Retinal Findings From Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients With Schizophrenia and Their Healthy Siblings

        Tas¸ delen Rümeysa,Ayık Batuhan,Kaya Hatice,Sevimli Neslihan 대한신경정신의학회 2023 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.20 No.4

Objective Retinal structural changes which were investigated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) have been reported in schizophrenia. Since cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of schizophrenia, the correlations between retinal findings and cognitive functions of patients and their healthy siblings may provide insight into the pathophysiological processes of the disorder. We aimed to investigate the relationship between neuropsychiatric tests and retinal changes in schizophrenia patients and their healthy siblings. Methods We measured OCT parameters and cognitive performance (via Trail Making Tests, verbal fluency tests, and The Digit Span Tests) of 72 participants (36 patients with schizophrenia and 36 healthy siblings) and disease severity (with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Global Assessment of Functioning, and Clinical Global Impression scales) in patients with schizophrenia and evaluated the relationship between retinal findings and clinical parameters, especially neurocognitive tests. Results We found decreased ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform layer thickness and macular volume in the patient group. There were strong correlations between neurocognitive tests and OCT findings in both groups. On the other hand, there was not any correlation between retinal findings and disease parameters. Conclusion The cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia may be more closely related to structural changes in the retina.

Evaluation of the accuracy of dental casts manufactured with 3D printing technique in the All-on-4 treatment concept

        Hilin Tas,Fatih Demirci,Mesut Tuzlali,Erkan Bahce,Guler Yildirim Avcu 대한치과보철학회 2022 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.14 No.6

Purpose. The aim of this study is to compare the casts obtained by using conventional techniques and liquid crystal display (LCD) three-dimensional (3D) print techniques in the All-on-4 treatment concept of the edentulous mandibular jaw. Materials and Methods. In this study, a completely edentulous mandibular acrylic cast (typodont) with bone-level implants placed with the All-on-4 technique served as a reference cast. In this typodont, impressions were taken with the conventional technique and dental stone casts were obtained. In addition, after scanning the acrylic cast in a dental laboratory scanner and obtaining the Standard Tessellation Language (STL) data, 3D printed casts were manufactured with a 3D printing device based on the design. The stone and 3D printed casts were scanned in the laboratory scanner and STL data were obtained, and then the interimplant distances were measured using Geomagic Control X v2020 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA) analysis software (n = 60). The obtained data were statistically evaluated with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s pairwise comparison tests. Results. As a result of the one-way ANOVA test, it was determined that the stone casts, 3D printed casts, and reference cast values in all distance intervals conformed to the normal distribution and these values had a significant difference among them in all distance intervals. In Tukey pairwise comparison test, significant differences were found between casts at all distance intervals. In all analyses, the level of significance was determined as .05. Conclusion. 3D printed casts obtained with a 3D LCD printing device can be an alternative to stone casts when implants are placed in edentulous jaws.

Relativistic Spinless Particles with Position Dependent Mass: Bound States and Scattering Phase Shifts

Ahmet Tas,Oktay Aydogdu,Mustafa Salti 한국물리학회 2017 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.70 No.10

The scattering and bound states of relativistic spinless particles with position-dependent mass are investigated in the framework of the improved Frost-Musulin potential, which is used to explain some properties of diatomic molecules. After we obtain approximate analytical solution of the Klein- Gordon equation, we find the normalized wave functions in terms of the hypergeometric functions in order to deal with the bound and the scattering states. We also analyze the scattering phase shifts and the bound states numerically.

Left ventricular dysfunction in relation with systemic inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

Sule Tas Gulen,Ufuk Eryilmaz,Mustafa Yilmaz,Fisun Karadag 대한내과학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.34 No.3

Background/Aims: Most important cause of mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is known to be cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the echocardiographic parameters in COPD patients with or without pre-diagnosed CVD and to investigate the relationship between echocardiographic parameters and systemic inflammation markers. Methods: A total of 60 stable COPD patients (23 patients with CVD, group 1; 37 patients without CVD, group 2) and 21 healthy controls (group 3) were included in the study. Six-minute walking test (6MWT), COPD assessment test (CAT), and Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise (BODE) index results were recorded. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HsCRP), interleukin 8 (IL-8), fetuin-A, Clara cell protein (CCL-16), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide levels were studied in serum. Parameters of left and right ventricular systolic and diastolic function were measured by echocardiography. Results: Patients with COPD had higher levels of systemic inflammation markers and lower level of inflammation inhibitor fetuin-A. When three groups were compared, group 1 had lower 6MWT result. HsCRP was highest in group 2 while other inflammatory markers were similar in groups 1 and 2. Regarding echocardiographic parameters, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was lower and left ventricle end-diastolic diameter (LVED), left ventricle end-systolic diameter (LVES) diameters were higher in group 1. The aortic diameter was higher in COPD patients. Fetuin-A was correlated with diameter of aorta and LVES. LVEF, LVED, and LVES were found to be correlated with functional parameters of COPD cases. Conclusions: In COPD, left ventricular functions are affected as well as right ventricle before prominent clinical findings of cardiac disease and these echocardiographic parameters correlate with functional parameters of COPD patients.
