The nucleotide sequences of a male-specificmarker sex determining region Y (SRY) gene and amitochondrial cytochrome B (CYTB) gene were characterizedand analyzed to establish a molecular method for identificationof species and sex of Korean roe deer (Capreolus pygargustianschanicus SRY sequencesshowed very similar result to those reported in Moose (Alcesalces) and Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), both of which had95.9% similarity in identity. CYTB genes were very similar tothose reported in Siberian roe deer (C. pygargus pygargus)which had 98.6% similarity and not to European roe deer (C.capreolus), suggesting that the DNA samples tested were ofSiberian roe deer lineage. Polymerase chain reaction(PCR)-based sex typing successfully discriminated betwencarcasses of male and female roe deer. Males had SRYband on agarose gels and females did not. The result of thismolecular sex typing provided similar information with thatobtained by genital organ observation. Therefore, thismolecular method using male specific marker SRY andmitochondrial CYTB genes would be very useful foridentification of the species and sex of the carcass remainsof roe deer.

The contents of total phenol and total flavonoid of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) were measured. The antioxidant activity of the artichoke was evaluated based on its potential as a scavenging the ABTS radical. These results showed the antioxidant activity of artichoke has a close relationship with the total flavonoid content. The compound showing antioxidant activity was isolated from the artichoke by repeated column chromatography and recrystallization. Based on the spectrometric studies, the compound was identified as 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid, known as cynarin. The content of cynarin from heads and leafs of the artichoke determined by $C_{18}$ reversed phase HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) coupled with photodiode array detector was 10.15 and 0.67 mg/g, respectively. This compound showed potent antioxidant activities against DPPH and ABTS radicals ($EC_{50}$ = 14.09 and 28.85 ${\mu}M$, respectively).

On April 4 to 6, 2005, there was a huge fire in Yangyang-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea, which burned over 250㏊ of forests and 246 buildings including 160 houses. The effects of reseeding rate and timing on productivity and nutritive value of forages in the forest fire burnt pasture in this study were investigated. The effect of reseeding could not be seen in the burnt pastures in terms of forage productivity and quality in short term but there was a long-term effect particularly with higher reseeding rates at later days after the fire on forage botanical composition. We concluded that forest fire brought reduction in pasture forage yield for a short period but it did not make a significant effect for a long term.
