Automated systems based on image processing have been introduced into the visual inspection process. However, owing to persisting technical and cost issues, human visual inspection still plays a major role in industrial inspections. When workers inspect small items (e.g., digital camera lenses or containers of liquid cosmetics) with one hand, which leads to an awkward posture, they experience upper-limb loading because of high loads on the upper extremities. This upper-limb loading may damage their hands, arms, and shoulders. There are a very limited number of studies that investigate the effects of upper-limb loading on humans during visual inspections; therefore, we conducted experiments on subjects where they used one hand to handle small objects for visual inspections. Using electromyography, joint angle measurements, and subjective evaluations, we investigated the effects of the grasp height and the subject’s inspection posture on the load applied to the upper limb. The results showed that the effects of upper-limb loading varied depending on the inspection posture because of variations in the locations where the loads acted on the body. Therefore, when evaluating upper-limb loading during such tasks, it was necessary to consider not only the muscle load but also the posture, the posture duration, and the subjective metrics.

Aluminum sulfate (alum) as a representative retention aid in papermaking processes was added to pulp suspensions, and the aluminum components adsorbed on the pulp were investigated quantitatively by two types of X-ray elementary analyses with regard to simultaneous changes of their surface charges. Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XFA) were applied to determine the aluminum components retained in pulp pads up to ca. 10 nm and 100 11m depth, respectively. In other words, XPS was utilized to analyze the outermost surface layers of the samples, and XFA was available for measurement of their extensive regions. A particle charge detector (PCD) was used to monitor streaming potentials at various pHs of the pulp mixtures under moderate sharing conditions. At pH 4.5 of pulp suspensions containing alum, surface charges of pulp fibers varied from negative to slight negative (approximately neutral) according to adsorption of aluminum components onto the pulp fibers. Subsequently, when a dilute NaOH solution in limited amounts was added to pulp mixtures. both streaming potentials and surface aluminum content of the pulp fibers increased distinctly although little total aluminum retention increased. Further addition of alkali solutions brought drastic decreases of the surface charges and surface aluminum content, while total aluminum content, on the contrary. increased gradually under neutral conditions.<br/> These results indicate that residual aluminum ions remained in pulp suspensions are predominantly adsorbed on surfaces of pulp fibers by adequate alkali additions, and they must sufficiently cationize the fiber surfaces with increases of somewhat cationic aluminum complexes formed on the surfaces. On the other hand, aluminum components formed in higher pH ranges have nearly no contribution to improvement of charge properties of the pulp fiber surfaces, even though aluminum retention in pulp pads increases. XPS and XFA analyses combined with streaming potential measurement using a PCD suggest close relationships between aluminum content on the pulp fiber surfaces and their charge properties.
The Effect of Disposal Slot Shape of Trash Box on PET Bottle Segregated Collection

PET bottles are collected for recycle by local municipalities in Japan. However, collected PET bottles usually have low quality. This study aimed to investigate visual effect of trash box, in particular disposal slot shape, for proper PET bottle collection and recycle. 4 series of trash box were designed. Collection experiment using them was conducted. In addition to collection experiment, questionnaire investigation was also conducted to clarify which disposal slot shape was more understandable for proper PET bottle disposal. Experimental results indicated that there were some differences, in regard to disposal slot shape of trash box, between actual behaviors and awareness as understandability. Consumers did not behave as expected by questionnaire investigation. It is assumed that unwillingness to dispose of PET bottle with segregation surpassed visual effect of disposal slot shape. In addition, it was found that writing (Direction Word) was more effective than image (disposal slot Shape) in terms of cap removal action. In contrast, direction word near disposal slot increased amounts of mixed foreign materials a little. To conclude the design effect of trash box on PET bottle segregated collection, some consideration about other factors such as set condition of trash box will be needed.
Extraction of Human Activities as Action Sequences using pLSA and Prefix Span

In this paper, we propose a framework for recognizing human activities in our daily life. Since a human activity is represented as a sequence of actions, the actions are recognized from videos and then the frequently-occurring human activities can be extracted from them. We show the experimental results applied to the data taken in a deskwork environment to demonstrate the performance of the proposed framework. The experimental results were as follows: 86.0% averaged recall rate and 78.3% averaged precision rate were obtained in extracting human activities.

Mucosal healing (MH) is a proposed therapeutic goal for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Whether MH is the final goal for UC, however, remains under debate. Therefore, to elucidate clinical variables predicting relapse after MH in UC could be useful for establishing further therapeutic strategy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the predictive variables for relapse in UC-patients after achieving MH. Methods: From April 2010 to February 2015, 298 UC-patients treated at Kitano Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. MH was defined as Mayo endoscopic subscore of 0 or 1. The cumulative relapse free rate after achieving MH was evaluated. Predictive variables for relapse in UC-patients were assessed by Cox regression analysis. Results: Of 298 UC-patients, 88 (29.5%) achieved MH. Of the 88 UC patients who achieved MH, 21 (23.9%) experienced UC-relapse. Based on Kaplan-Meier analysis, the cumulative relapse free rate at 1, 3, and 5 years after achieving MH was 87.9%, 70.2%, and 63.8%, respectively. The cumulative relapse free rate tended to be higher in the Mayo-0 group (76.9%) than in the Mayo-1 group (54.1%) at 5 years, although the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.313). Cox regression analysis indicated that the use of an immunomodulator was a predictive variable for relapse in UC-patients after achieving MH(P=0.035). Conclusions: Our data demonstrated that the prognosis of UC patients after achieving endoscopic MH could be based on UC refractoriness requiring an immunomodulator. (Intest Res 2016;14:37-42)
