An integrated silicon pressure sensor has been designed, fabricated and tested. The signal conditioning circuits were designed to include calibration and temperature compensation of output voltage through trimming of diffusion and ion-implanted resistors. Before trimming of resistors, the compensation parameters such as pressure sensitivity, temperature coefficient of pressure sensitivity, temperature coefficient of piezoresistors and pressure sensitivity of piezoresistors were measured. Then offset voltage, span, and temperature coefficients of offset voltage and span were calibrated by trimming of resistors. The measured output voltage met our design specification and simulation value above room temperature. But, the measured output voltage at -30°C deviated from our design specification and simulation value because the offset voltages were found to vary randomly as a function of temperature.

The perforation of a cardiac chamber by a fractured rib after blunt trauma is a rare event. Here, we report the case of patient who was referred for multiple rib fractures after a fall from a height. The patient was found to have a penetrating cardiac injury which was detected on a computed tomography chest scan. Computed tomography is a useful screening tool for victims of blunt chest trauma. Once cardiac perforation has been confirmed or is highly suspected, it is important to preserve the patient’s vital signs until reaching the operating room by minimally manuplating the chest wall and permitting hypotension, which also prevents exsanguinating hemorrhage. For the same reasons, early cardiac tamponade may also improve the patient’s survival. [ J Trauma Inj 2014; 27: 192-5 ]

Subcutaneous emphysema is a benign condition following trauma (pneumothorax and oropharyngeal), cervical or thoracic procedures, and mediastinal infection. However, severe subcutaneous emphysema may be related to serious complications such as respiratory failure, airway compromise, and tension- related phenomena. Many alternative therapies have been tried to treat patients with this condition. We report our experience with vacuum-assisted closure therapy for treating patients with severe subcutaneous emphysema. [ J Trauma Inj 2015; 28: 276-279 ]

The timing of flowering, which is of crucial importance for plant growth and survival, is controlled by intricate pathways. To identify heading date-QTL, we constructed high resolution map on chromosome 3 using heterogeneous inbred family-near isogenic lines (H-NILs) derived from F7 RILs generated by the cross of early-heading japonica rice ‘H143’ and middle-late-heading indica-japonica hybrid cultivar ‘Milyang23’. QTL and subsequent sequence analysis using H-NILs revealed that the gene underlining QTL EH3, which is detected in the region of Hd16, is EL1 encoding casein kinase I (CKI). Two types of single amino acid substitutions in Ser/Thr kinase domain of EL1 were found in various cultivars, among which H-NIL(eh3) caused loss of function in EL1 demonstrated by altered heading date and GA response. Moreover, the phosphorylation of EL1 appears to involve in EL1 activity to regulate heading date. Transcriptional analysis clearly indicated that H-NIL(EH3) suppresses heading under LD conditions by down-regulating Ehd1, there by Hd3a and RFT1 expressions were not induced, suggesting that EL1 is photoperiod-sensitive and functions as a LD-specific suppressor of heading. Further characterization suggested that EL1 is likely to involve in anther development and seed settings by regulating GAMYB expression. Our study demonstrated that the genetic basis of natural variation occurred in ‘H143’ was revealed by QTL analysis using H-NILs, and EH3/EL1 function is crucial for heading and development in rice. The genetic natural variation of H-NIL(eh3) may have contributed to adaptation of rice cultivation to the higher regions by regulating the expression of rice flowering activator genes and GA signaling.
대면첨삭의 효용성 연구 -E-learning 글쓰기 수업을 중심으로-

The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of face-to-face feedbacks in freshman e-learning composition classes in Global Campus at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. First, this research classified participants into two groups: Group 1 who participated in face-to-face feedbacks and Group 2 did not. Then, it examined mean differences and score changes between these two groups by means of t-test. The participants in Group 1 showed meaningful score improvements in Task 2. 3 and 5 compared to Task 1 and 4. Here, Task 2, 3, and 5 were done after face-to-face feedbacks, while Task 1 and 4 were before face-to-face feedbacks. On the other hands, the participants in Group 3 did not display any significant changes in their scores throughout the tasks. There were no critical score differences in Task 1 which had been carried before face-to-face feedbacks between two groups. However, after face-to-face feedbacks were offered, Group 1 that participated in face-to-face feedbacks exhibited higher mean scores of Task 2 and 3 than Group 2 that did not participated in such feedbacks. The participants who participated in face-to-face feedbacks scored higher than the ones who did not; this can be assumed that the effects of the first face-to-face feedback are sustained. Considering the findings in the present research, it is proposed that face-to-face feedbacks are very effective to improve writing abilities of students. Contrary to the previous arguments that e-learning is not suitable for composition classes, the results of this paper indicates that if face-to-face feedbacks are effectively utilized, e-learning can expand to composition classes.

Heading date and photoperiod sensitivity are fundamental traits that determine rice adaptation to a wide range of geographic environments. By quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and candidate gene analysis using wholegenome re-sequencing, we found that Oryza sativa Pseudo-Response Regulator37 (OsPRR37; hereafter PRR37) is responsible for the Early heading7-2 (EH7-2)/Heading date2 (Hd2) QTL which was identified from a cross of late-heading rice ‘Milyang23 (M23)’ and early-heading rice ‘H143’. H143 contains a missense mutation of an invariantly conserved amino acid in the CCT (CONSTANS, CO-like, and TOC1) domain of PRR37 protein. In the world rice collection, different types of nonfunctional PRR37 alleles were found in many European and Asian rice cultivars. Notably, the japonica varieties harboring nonfunctional alleles of both Ghd7/Hd4 and PRR37/Hd2 flower extremely early under natural long-day conditions, and are adapted to the northernmost regions of rice cultivation, up to 53° N latitude. Genetic analysis revealed that the effects of PRR37 and Ghd7 alleles on heading date are additive, and PRR37 down-regulates Hd3a expression to suppress flowering under long-day conditions. Our results demonstrate that natural variations in PRR37/Hd2 and Ghd7/Hd4 have contributed to the expansion of rice cultivation to temperate and cooler regions

Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a lifesaving therapy used in critically ill patients with severe cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is supplemented to treat fluid overload, acute kidney injury, and electrolyte disturbances during ECMO. However, the best time to initiate CRRT is not well-defined. We performed this study to identify the optimal timing of CRRT for ECMO. Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of 296 patients over 12 years. Patients received CRRT during ECMO at Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, or Yonsei University Hospital. We assigned patients to an early or late CRRT group depending on the CRRT initiation time. We considered early CRRT to be CRRT instituted within 72 hours of ECMO initiation. Results: Among 296 patients, 212 patients (71.6%) received early CRRT. After using a propensity score matching method, 47 patients were included in each group. The time from ECMO initiation to CRRT initiation was 1.1 ± 0.9 days in the early CRRT group and 14.6 ± 18.6 days in the late CRRT group. No difference in patients’ mortality (P = 0.834) or hospital stay (P = 0.627) between the early and late CRRT groups was found. After adjusting all covariables, there was no significant difference in mortality between the early and late CRRT groups (hazard ratio, 0.697; 95% confidence interval, 0.410-1.184; P = 0.182). Conclusion: This study showed that early CRRT may not be superior to late CRRT in ECMO patients. Further clinical trials are warranted.

A directly heated SO₃ decomposer for the sulfur-iodine and hybrid-sulfur processes has been introduced and analyzed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code CFX 11. The use of a directly heated decomposition reactor in conjunction with a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) allows for higher decomposition reactor operating temperatures. However, the high temperatures and strongly corrosive operating conditions associated with SO₃ decomposition present challenges for the structural materials of decomposition reactors. In order to resolve these problems, we have designed a directly heated SO₃ decomposer using RA330 alloy as a structural material and have performed a CFD analysis of the design based on the finite rate chemistry model. The CFD results show the maximum temperature of the structural material could be maintained sufficiently below 1073 K, which is considered the target temperature for RA 330. The CFD simulations also indicated good performance in terms of SO₃ decomposition for the design parameters of the present study.
