Industrial applications such as pick-and-place tasks and CNC machining often involve repetitive motions that may contain periodic disturbances. Due to the periodic nature of these applications, the idea of iterative learning control can be exploited to cope with external periodic disturbances so as to improve system performance. In addition, in order to ensure satisfactory motion accuracy for operation scenarios that may encounter significant disturbance, (e.g., machining and polishing), a robust controller is essential. In particular, iterative learning sliding mode control (ILSMC) is shown to be suitable for control applications that encounter periodic disturbances. However, when the disturbance contains high frequency components, ILSMC may become less effective in compensating for external disturbances if its velocity estimation is not accurate enough. In order to cope with the aforementioned problem, this paper develops a gradient-descent-based velocity observer with a residual displacement compensation term to provide accurate velocity feedback to be used in ILSMC. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Objectives. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for deep neck infection (DNI) and leads to complications and poor outcomes. Our study aimed to investigate the risk, prognosis, and complications of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) in patients with T2DM. Methods. We extracted data of patients newly diagnosed as having T2DM between January 2000 and December 2011 from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. These patients were matched with patients without T2DM, and PTA incidence was compared between both cohorts. Results. In total, 67,852 patients with and 135,704 patients without T2DM were enrolled. PTA incidence was significantly higher in patients with T2DM (incidence rate ratio, 1.91; P<0.001); moreover, PTA incidence was higher at 1 to 5 years after T2DM diagnosis than at <1 and >5 years after T2DM diagnosis. Cox regression analysis showed that patients with T2DM had an approximately 2-fold higher PTA risk (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.89, P<0.001). Patients with a higher adapted Diabetes Complications Severity Index (aDCSI) had higher PTA risk than those with a lower aDCSI (aHRs: 2.17 for aDCSI ≥1, P=0.006 and 1.81 for aDCSI=0, P=0.002). T2DM patients with a high aDCSI (≥1) had a nonsignificantly longer hospitalization duration and a higher rate of DNI complications than did those with a low aDCSI (=0). Conclusion. In patients with T2DM, PTA incidence was relatively high, and it increased with T2DM severity. Moreover, T2DM patients should be particularly careful about PTA within 1 to 5 years after the diagnosis, and physicians should keep in mind that the prognosis of PTA was correlated with T2DM severity.

Background/Aims: Growth hormone (GH) is the main regulator of somatic growth, metabolism, and gender dimorphism in the liver. GH receptor (GHR) signaling in cancer is derived from a large body of evidence, although the GHR signaling pathway involved in the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC, remains unclear. We aimed to explore the expression of GHR and analyze its association with clinicopathologic features and prognosis of patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Methods: The expression of GHR mRNA was investigated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in paired tumors and adjacent non-tumorous (ANT) liver tissues of 200 patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Western blotting and immunofluorescence assays using the HCV-infected Huh7.5.1 cell model was performed. Results: GHR mRNA was significantly lower in HCV-HCC tissues than in corresponding ANT liver tissues. GHR mRNA and protein levels also decreased in the HCV-infected Huh7.5.1 cell model. Notably, lower GHR expression was associated with age of >60 years (P=0.0111) and worse clinicopathologic characteristics, including alpha-fetoprotein >100 ng/mL (P=0.0403), cirrhosis (P=0.0075), vascular invasion (P=0.0052), pathological stage II-IV (P=0.0002), and albumin ≤4.0 g/dL (P=0.0055), which were linked with poor prognosis of HCC. Most importantly, the high incidence of recurrence and poor survival rates in patients with a low ratio of tumor/ANT GHR (≤0.1) were observed, indicating that low expression levels of GHR had great risk for development of HCC in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a significant down-regulation of GHR expression as a new unfavorable independent prognostic factor in patients with chronic hepatitis C and HCC. Intravenous Immunoglobulin to Suppress Progression in a Patient With Advanced Breast Cancer
Kai-Liang Lin,Ta-Chung Chao,Ming-Han Chen 한국유방암학회 2022 Journal of breast cancer Vol.25 No.3
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used to treat various diseases and has anticancer effects that suppress metastases in animal models of sarcoma and melanoma. However, these effects have been observed in a limited number of clinical cases. We report the case of a patient with metastatic breast cancer in which long-term IVIG treatment stopped disease progression in the absence of salvage chemotherapy. The patient was treated with IVIG for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia. Surprisingly, the lung and brain metastases were stabilized, and the patient achieved a progression-free interval of 29 months. More cases are needed to investigate and confirm the efficacy of IVIG in solid tumors in the future.
Effect of design parameters on the anti-penetration properties of space armor
Tso-Liang Teng,Ta-Ming Shih,Cheng-Chung Lu 국제구조공학회 2008 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.28 No.6
New types of armor, including space armor, multiple-layered armor, composite armor and modular armor have been successfully developed and installed on the armored vehicles of several nations. The protective capability of armor against penetration is established. Of developed composite armor, space armor has a simple structure and is easy to produce and can be produced at low cost. This study uses the finite element package DYTRAN and the pre and post processor PNTRAN to elucidate the ballistic resistance and penetration of space armor. Factors such as armor thickness, space between armors and projectile profile are considered. A technique for simulating the protection afforded by armor and supporting the design of space armor is developed.

Multiple-copy-gene integration on chromosome of Escherichia coli for beta-galactosidase production
Shao-Yi Hou,Hsing-Ta Chen,Ming-Shu Lin 한국화학공학회 2008 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.25 No.5
Recombinant E. coli strains with 1-3 copies of lacZ genes on their chromosomes were constructed and their β-galactosidase (β-gal) expressions were examined. Serial dilution cultures were used to analyze the long-term genetic stability of the recombinant lacZ genes of the chromosomal or plasmid expression system. The strain with a 3-copy lacZ on the chromosome has a sustainable β-gal expression through 60 hours. However, the β-gal activity of the plasmid expression system lasted less than 36 hours under a no selection condition. Obviously, the genetic stability of the chromosomal expression system demonstrated in this study is better than that of the plasmid expression system under nonselective condition, such as a medium without antibiotics. The results demonstrated that the strains with a multiple-copy-gene on the chromosome are useful for protein production in industrial repeated fed-batch fermentation.

It has been postulated that grana stacking and destacking are mediated by the alteration of the surface charge density on the thylakoid membrane, which is regulated by the LHCII phosphorylation and dephosphorylation cycle. Insect-induced cecidomyiid galls, transformed from Machilus thunbergii Sieb & Zucc. (Lauraceae) leaves, are totally deficient in the pigment–protein complexes CPI and A1 of PSI and AB1 and AB2 of PSII. Although the galls are deficient in LHCII complex, grana stacking is normal. Our data suggest that the LHCII complex may not be the only factor responsible for grana stacking of thylakoid membranes.
