The Effects of RSVP on Scrolling through Long Lists

Lists are regularly used in smartphones in order to display data that cannot fit in one screen. Consequently, smartphone users often experience mental and physical fatigue while browsing through long lists. Although a great amount of effort has been put into developing scrolling methods in mobile devices, the current flicking technique does not seem to be flawless. Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), a technique that can be implemented to allow space to be traded off for time, is suggested as a potential solution. A user study is performed, exploring the possibilities of enhancing browsing experiences on mobile devices through the utilization of the RSVP technique.
Chemical Doping of Graphene by Altretamine(2,4,6-Tris [dimethylamino]-1,3,5-Triazine)

The electronic properties of altretamine(2,4,6-tris [dimethylamino]-1,3,5-triazine) adsorbed on epitaxial graphene (EG) were investigated by core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) in conjunction with low energy electron diffraction (LEED). We found that altretamine molecule adsorbed onto interface layer (S1) of graphene as we confirm decrement of S1 peak using CLPES and haziness of LEED pattern. Moreover, the measured work function changes verified that increased adsorption of the altretamine on graphene layer showed n-type doping characteristics due to charge transfer from altretamine to graphene through the nitrogens. Two distinct nitrogen bonding feature associated with the N 1s peak was clearly observed in the core-level spectra indicating two different chemical environments
Real-time correction system for improving the disparity image

A correction method for local stereo matching disparity images is an essential technology in stereo vision. We propose the hardware architecture for correcting a real-time disparity image. This method uses the similarity between the pixel of invalid disparity value and the neighboring pixels to estimate an alternative value for the invalid value. The experimental results showed that the proposed system can correct a disparity image in real time for 60fps image processing.

Background: Becker`s nevus is a relatively common harmatoma that, in adult patients, is usually accompanied with hair growth. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of epilation laser treatments, namely, long-pulsed 1064-nm Nd:YAG and 755-nm Alexandrite laser, in the treatment of Becker`s nevus Methods: Retrospective chart reviews and photographic analyses were performed for patients treated with epilation lasers. Clinical improvement was assessed by two blinded physicians using 5-point global assessment scale. Results: Total 13 patients (8 males, 5 females) with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, a mean age 2 of 5.0±9.4 years, were included. The most common lesions were on the cheeks (4 patients, 30.8 %) and every lesion showed scattered patterns of hair growth. 8 patients were treated with long-pulsed 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser; 4 patients were treated with 755-nm Alexandrite laser and one patient was treated with both lasers. The mean treatment interval was 28.7±6.0 days. The median total treatment session was 2.0 (interquartile range 1.0). After laser epilation therapy, 11 patients (84.6 %) showed an improvement margin of 50 %. The difference of treatment response between two lasers was not clinically significant. (p=0.80) No persistent and serious adverse events were observed during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Laser epilation can be an effective, early therapeutic option for the treatment of Becker`s nevus.
Multi-temporal Analysis of Deforestation in Pyeongyang and Hyesan, North Korea

Since forest is an important part of ecological system, the deforestation is one of global substantive issues. It is generally accepted that the climate change is related to the deforestation. The issue is worse in developing countries because the forest is one of important natural resources. In the case of North Korea, the deforestation is on the rise from forest reclamation for firewood collection and food production. Moreover, a secondary effect from flood intensifies the damage. Also, the political situation in North Korea presents difficulty to have in-situ measurements. It means that the accurate information of North Korea is nearly impossible to obtain. Thus, assessing the current situation of the forest in North Korea by indirect method is required. The objective of this study is to monitor the forest status of North Korea using multitemporal Landsat images, from 1980s to 2010s. Since the deforestation in North Korea is caused by local residents, we selected two study areas of high population density: Pyeongyang and Hyesan. In North Korea, most of clean Landsat images are acquired in fall season. The fall images have an advantage that we can easily distinguish agriculture areas from forest areas, also have an disadvantage that the forests cannot be easily identified because some of trees have turned red. To identify the forests exactly, we proposed a modified Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (mNDVI) value. The deforestation in Pyeongyang and Hyesan was analyzed by using mNDVI. The dimension of forest has decreased approximately 36% in Pyeongyang for 27 years and approximately 25% in Hyesan for 16 years. The results show that the forest areas in Pyeongyang and Hyesan have been steadily reduced.
Promotion of Insulin Sensitivity with Chungkookjang Intake through Gut Microbiota-Liver-Brain Axis

Chungkookajng fermented with different Bacillus spp. has different efficacies for metabolic functions. It has been reported to have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and improves glucose metabolism by potentiating insulin sensitivity and improving β-cell function and mass. Furthermore, amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation is increased by brain insulin resistance. The impairment of insulin/IGF-1 signaling mainly in the hippocampus and brain insulin resistance is connected to signals originating in the liver and gut microbiota, known as the gut microbiota-liver-brain axis. It indicates that the changes in the production of short-chain fatty acids by the gut microbiota and proinflammatory cytokines can alter insulin resistance in the liver and brain. Isoflavonoids such as genistein and daidzein are detected in the brain tissues after passing through the blood-brain barrier, where it can directly influence neuroinflammation and brain insulin resistance and modulate Aβ deposition. Chungkookjang intake reduces harmful bacteria and elevates beneficial bacteria to decrease proinflammatory cytokines and LPS in the gut, and it promotes gut microbiome-liver axis to decrease hepatic insulin resistance. Chunkookjang can modulate systemic and brain insulin resistance to directly suppress type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, and it influences Aβ deposition by activating the gut microbiota-liver-brain axis. Chungkookjang intake can enhance brain insulin sensitivity and neuroinflammation, directly and indirectly, to protect against the development of Alzheimer’s disease, and the gut microbiota-liver-brain axis is mainly involved in the indirect pathway. Further human studies need to confirm the chungkookjang activities in improving type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
