Development of a Hand Pose Rally System Based on Image Processing

Suganuma, Akira,Nishi, Koki The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2015 IEIE Transactions on Smart Processing & Computing Vol.4 No.5

The "stamp rally" is an event that participants go the round with predetermined points for the purpose of collecting stamps. They bring the stamp card to these points. They, however, sometimes leave or lose the card. In this case, they may not reach the final destination of the stamp rally. The purpose of this research is the construction of the stamp rally system which distinguishes each participant with his or her hand instead of the stamp card. We have realized our method distinguishing a hand posture by the image processing. We have also evaluated it by 30 examinees. Furthermore, we have designed the data communication between the server and the checkpoint to implement our whole system. We have also designed and implemented the process for the registering participant, the passing checkpoint and the administration.

      • Carcinogenic Role of Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Inducing Protein of Helicobacter pylori in Human Stomach

Suganuma, Masami,Kuzuhara, Takashi,Yamaguchi, Kensei,Fujiki, Hirota Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2006 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.39 No.1

Helicobacter pylori is the definitive carcinogen for stomach cancer and is known to induce proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$ (TNF-$\alpha$) and interleukin-1(IL-1) in the stomach. Based on our findings that TNF-$\alpha$ is an endogenous tumor promoter, we identified the TNF-$\alpha$ inducing protein (Tip$\alpha$) gene family, and confirmed Tip$\alpha$ and HP-MP1 as new carcinogenic proteins of H. pylori. Tip$\alpha$ protein is unique to H. pylori, and this paper shows the strong tumor promoting activity of Tip$\alpha$ gene family, in cooperation with Ras protein and its mechanisms of action in relation to NF-${\kappa}B$ activation, and discusses the carcinogenic role of Tip$\alpha$ in stomach cancer. Our recent finding showing that penicillin-binding proteins of other bacteria are weak homologues of Tip$\alpha$ is also discussed.

The Relationship between Writing Tasks in Textbooks and CAN-DO Lists in terms of Task Difficulty

Yoko Suganuma Oi 범태평양 응용언어학회 2018 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.22 No.2

The purpose of the study was twofold. First, it investigated the kinds of writing tasks in textbooks used by senior high school students in Japan. Second, it examined the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels of the writing tasks in English-language textbooks for Japanese senior high school students. The study focused on the authorized “English Expression I” Japanese textbooks. The series of seven “English Expression I” textbooks contains 100 writing tasks, which were analysed to see how their types matched the CEFR criteria. Rasch modelling was then used to assess the difficulty of six selected writing tasks. A total of 158 Japanese senior high school students participated in the main research. They were asked to write six English compositions without using a dictionary and were given twenty minutes to write each composition. The research was conducted over a period of one week. The results of the modelling suggest that writing a selfintroduction is more difficult than other writing tasks, such as writing about interests and daily life. More than half of the writing tasks in the textbooks were categorized as writing about “oneself” rather than writing about “others”, and most tasks belonged to the CEFR A1 level.

Writing Anxiety Among Japanese First-Year University Students

        ( Yoko Suganuma Oi ) 범태평양 응용언어학회 2023 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.27 No.1

This study aims to analyse how Japanese first-year university students’ writing anxiety in academic writing classes changed over nine months. A total of 102 Japanese first-year university students participated in an academic writing class. Two assessors evaluated the students’ compositions, using the same writing assessment rubric. The students were divided into three groups―low, middle, and high proficiency groups―based on the results of a placement test before entering university. The students also completed open-ended questionnaires and the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI). Multivariate analysis of covariance was conducted to examine the difference in SLWAI scores for the first, middle, and final writing tests and among low, middle, and high proficiency groups. The results showed that the students in the high proficiency group had different writing anxiety tendencies. It was found that somatic anxiety in students in the higher-level English proficiency group decreased, and that cognitive anxiety was reduced for the students in all proficiency groups. On the other hand, avoidance behaviour anxiety was not decreased. The results from the questionnaire showed that writing anxiety might be related to English proficiency, because the ideas about academic writing varied among the different proficiency groups.

      • Self-Assessment of Topic Development in Written Production among High School Students

        ( Yoko Suganuma Oi ) 범태평양응용언어학회 2014 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.18 No.1

The present study mainly focuses on the topic development in student written production through the consistency between student selfassessment and teacher assessment. In the present study, topic development means “cohesion”, “overall organization”, and “coherence”. It proposes the next hypotheses: (i) Students could assess cohesive devices such as discourse markers as well as teachers do. (ii) Students could assess the overall organization pattern of their written production as well as teachers do. (iii) Students could assess the coherence of their written production as well as teachers do. 169 Japanese high school students whose ages ranged from 16 to 18 years old were asked to write an essay with about 150 words in 30 minutes. One American English teacher and one Japanese English teacher also participated in the study. Teachers and students used the same self-assessment sheet written in both English and Japanese. And then 82 students` written production was chosen as the subject based on the number of the words*. They were divided into three groups referring to teachers` assessment. The results show that the writing patterns in terms of topic development are divided into eight patterns. The self-assessment of the students is not different from teacher assessment in the aspect of overall organization. However, the consistency between teacher assessment and student self-assessment was not found in the assessment of other cohesive devices and overall coherence.

      • Clustering and Tracking of Obstacles Using Stereo Vision System

Naoki Suganuma 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8

The driving support is one of the most important research areas in intelligent transport system (ITS).Moreover, obstacle extraction system is one of most important system. Here, baseline length of our stereovision systemis shorter than general one so that the room mirror can cover it. Accordingly, it can be placed unobtrusively and never beunsighted for the driver. Therefore, our stereovision system is suite for interior sensor. In our previous report, weproposed an obstacle extraction method using such stereovision system, and traditional "V-Disparity" approach wasextended to more flexible system by using Virtual Disparity Image. Hereby obstacles can be extracted even if thevehicle has large roll movement. In this paper, we will discuss about clustering and tracking method of obstacles.

      • Efect of surrounding visual information on perceived distance of image presented on a display

Mutsumi Suganuma 한국디자인학회 2010 한국디자인학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.10

Portable display devices such as iPods/iPhones, mobile- phones with T.V. tuners, or portable game devices are becoming popular. When we see image/video with those devices, viewing circumstance is largely different from that of 'traditional' viewing circumstance. That is, the angle of the display surface against the ground (or wall) surface, and our body posture. We suspected that such difference of display surface and our body posture might affect our perception and recognition of the image shown on the display. Led by this motivation, we have been investigating the effect of new "viewing circumstance" on perception/recognition of image shown on portable display devices. In this study, we focused on the effect of misalignment of display surface and surface of the display surroundings (i.e. surface of wall), on recognition of distance of image. In the experiment, a panel with matrix texture printed was set behind the display device. According to the condition (aligned/misaligned conditions), the panel was set orthogonal to the ground surface, or slanted from orthogonal. Ponzo illusion figure was shown on the display, and the strength of visual illusion was measured for both conditions. We found smaller amount of visual illusion in misaligned condition, which suggests that the misalignment of the display surface and the wall surface resulted in distorting the distance of displayed image.

        세라믹스의 접합기술

        菅沼克昭(Katsuaki Suganuma) 한국세라믹학회 2006 세라미스트 Vol.9 No.6

Joining ceramics to metals has a variety of applications both in the structural and the electronics fields. One of the great benefits of the adoption of joining into the structural applications is to provide reliability to the ceramic components by backing up with metal components. In joining ceramics and metals, two key factors, i.e., establishing chemical bonding at interfaces and dissipation of thermal stress across interfaces, should be paid for attention. Many joining methods have been already established such as adhesive and mechanical joining, brazing and soldering, and solid state bonding. Each has its own benefits with some drawbacks. One can select a suitable process and materials following the requirements of the application. This report focuses on the current status of joining technology for ceramics/metal system.
