      • The ERCC1 C118T Polymorphism Predicts Clinical Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer Patients Receiving Oxaliplatin-Based Chemotherapy: a Meta-analysis Based on 22 Studies

        Background: Although the predictive value of the excision repair cross-complementing group 1 (ERCC1) C118T polymorphism in clinical outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy has been evaluated in numerous published studies, the conclusions are conflicting. Therefore, we performed the present meta-analysis to determine the precise role of the ERCC1 C118T polymorphism in this clinical situation and help optimize individual chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A multiple search strategy was used to identify eligible studies. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate objective response and oxaliplatin-induced toxicity, with hazard ratios (HRs) with 95%CIs for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: A total of 22 studies including 2,846 CRC patients were eligible in the analysis. Overall, no significant correlation was found between the ERCC1 C118T polymorphism and objective response to oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, in all patients or in the Asian and Caucasian subgroups. However, the pooled analysis showed that the PFS and OS were significantly shorter in patients who carried T/T or T/C genotypes of ERCC1 C118T as compared to the C/C genotype. On stratified analysis by ethnicity, the ERCC1 118T allele was associated with a favorable prognosis in Caucasians (PFS, HR=0.58, 95%CI: 0.24-1.44; OS, HR=0.38, 95%CI: 0.22-0.64) but an unfavorable prognosis in Asians (PFS, HR=2.49, 95%CI: 1.87-3.33; OS, HR=2.63, 95%CI: 1.87-3.69) based on a dominant model. In addition, we failed to find a statistically significant impact of ERCC1 C118T polymorphism on oxaliplatin-induced toxicity. Conclusions: The ERCC1 C118T polymorphism may have prognostic value in patients with CRC undergoing oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.

        Soil and ribbed concrete slab interface modeling using large shear box and 3D FEM

        Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.

      • Modeling and Performance Analysis of Wireless Sensor Network Systems Using Petri Nets

        Wireless sensor network (WSN), composed by sensors, microprocessor and wireless communication interface, is an interesting field, and gains more and more attentions. The importance of sensor networks is highlighted by the number of recent funding initiatives, including the DARPA SENSIT program, military programs, and NSF Program Announcements. The wide application prospects make it developing rapidly in some fields such as health care, environment monitoring and military field. Petri nets are chosen for their ability to describe and study discrete event systems that characterized as being event systems that are characterized as being concurrent, asynchronous, parallel, nondeterministic, and stochastic. We construct ordinary and temporal Petri net models for wireless sensor network systems and use the model to solve the problem of location of nodes of wireless sensor network.

        Molecular mechanisms conferring asymmetrical cross-resistance between tebufenozide and abamectin in Plutella xylostella

        Based on the confirmation of asymmetrical cross-resistance between abamectin and tebufenozide in Plutella xylostella, the present work proved that the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase plays a decisive role in crossresistance, and the expression of various cytochrome P450 (CYP450) genes in different strains was surveyed to elucidate the molecular basis of the underlying mechanisms. Enzyme analysis showed the activity of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase was notable enhanced in the strains resistant to both tebufenozide (3.07-fold) and abamectin (3.37-fold), suggesting that the enhancement of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase is the main detoxification mechanism responsible for the cross-resistance. CYP4M7 (64.58-fold) and CYP6K1 (41.97-fold) had extremely high expression levels in the Teb-R strain, selected using tebufenozide, which was highly resistant to tebufenozide (RR 185.5) and moderately cross-resistant to abamectin (RR 41.0). When this strain was subjected to further selection using abamectin, the resultant Aba-R strain showed a higher expression of CYP6K1 (60.32-fold). However, the expression of CYP4M7 was reduced (10.62-fold). Correspondingly, the Aba-R strain became more resistant to abamectin (RR 593.8) and less resistant to tebufenozide (RR 28.0). Therefore, we concluded that the over expression of CYP4M7 was the main cause for tebufenozide resistance, and that CYP6K1 mainly conferred abamectin resistance. The asymmetrical cross-resistance occurred because tebufenozide selection not only enhanced the expression of CYP4M7, but also that of CYP6K1. This is the first report on the molecular mechanism of asymmetrical cross-resistance between insecticides.

        Canonical Correlation Analysis of Selecting Optimal Ground Motion Intensity Measures for Bridges

        The correlation between ground motion intensity measures (IMs) and that between component seismic demand parameters (DPs) have significant effects on the seismic demand of bridges. A canonical correlation analysis method was introduced to consider the two types of correlations in the optimal selection of IMs for probabilistic seismic demand analysis of bridges. A group of 100 ground motion-bridge samples were generated with the bin approach and Latin hypercube sampling method, to quantify the uncertainties of earthquakes and bridges. With the nonlinear time history analysis, the overall correlation between IMs and DPs was established (IMs and DPs were respectively treated as a whole), meanwhile the correlation between IMs and that between DPs were considered. The optimal IM was selected and verified with the criteria of efficiency, proficiency and sufficiency. The canonical correlation analysis reduced the complexity and limitation of simple correlation analysis used for all pairs of correlations between each of the IMs and each of the DPs. The combined peak IM of PGA (the peak ground acceleration), PGV (the peak ground velocity), PGD (the peak ground displacement) and combined root mean square IM of aRMS, vRMS, and dRMS were proved to be the optimal IMs and more appropriate in the probabilistic seismic demand analysis of normal girder bridges.

        지역 활성화를 위한 공공미술 프로젝트 요소에 관한 연구

        공공미술은 단순히 공동체를 위해 제작되고 소유되는 미술품을 의미하지만, 현대의 공공미술은 새로운 의미로 공공미술이 변화되고 있고, 다양한 프로젝트들을 통하여 시행되는 물리적 행위에서부터 실천적 참여로의 변화는 더욱 가속화되고 있는 가운데, 미술은 단순한 미적 상품으로써가 아니라 실제 공간에서 대중들과 상호작용하는 커뮤니티의 장으로 변화 되어가고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 지역 활성화를 위해 공공미술 개념의 변화에 따른 공공미술 프로젝트 요소의 중요도를 확인하여, 향후 지역 활성화를 위한 전략 수립에 있어서 유의미한 공공미술 프로젝트 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적을 두고 공공미술 프로젝트 성공사례 분석을 통하여 예술가 및 예술작품, 지역문화 특색 이용, 공동체 자원개발, 교육자원 개발, 관광자원 개발, 온라인 홍보, 오프라인 홍보, 문화상품 개발이라는 공공미술 프로젝트 요소 8가지를 도출하였다. 연구결과 공공미술 프로젝트에 관람객을 유치하기 위해서는 시대에 부합하는 마케팅의 방안을 제시하여야 하고, 공공미술 프로젝트가 갖추어야 하는 미술의 본질인 예술성 반영이 토대가 되어야 된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 공공미술 프로젝트가 진행되는 지역문화와 성격에 맞는 문화상품 개발, 교육자원 개발 및 관광자원 개발이 더불어 이루어져야 성공적인 공공미술 프로젝트가 될 수 있으며, 이를 바탕으로 지역 활성화로 이어질 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 공공미술 프로젝트의 성공사례를 토대로 요인도출과 도출된 요인을 전문가를 대상으로 사례분석에 머물지 않고 이를 분석, 실증하여 요인에 대한 중요도를 제시하였다는 점에서 기존 선행연구들과 차별성 가지고 있으며, 향후 공공미술 프로젝트에 직접 참여하여 관람하는 관람객을 대상으로 공공미술 프로젝트의 요인과 중요도에 관한 연구를 진행함으로써 현실에 직접적으로 반영이 될 수 있는 연구가 이루어지기를 희망한다. Public art means art that is simply produced and owned for the community, but modern public art is changing in a new sense, and with the shift from physical behavior to practical participation being implemented through various projects further accelerating, art is becoming not just an aesthetic product but a community chapter that interacts with the public in real space. Therefore, this study identified the importance of public art project elements according to changes in public art concept to revitalize the region, and derived 8 public art elements, such as artists and art works, community resource development, tourism resource development, online promotion, and offline cultural products through analysis of successful cases of public art project development. Research shows that in order to attract visitors to public art projects, we need to present marketing measures that are consistent with the times, and that reflecting artistry, the essence of art that public art projects must have, should be the basis. It also suggests that cultural product development, education resource development and tourism resource development should be combined with local culture and character where public art projects are conducted to become successful public art projects, and based on this, can lead to local revitalization. Based on the success story of the public art project, this research is differentiated from the previous studies in that it presented importance to experts by analyzing factors without staying in the case analysis, and it is hoped that research on factors and importance of public art projects will be carried out for visitors who participate directly in public art projects in the future and can be conducted and reflected directly in reality.

        Improving thermal shock and ablation resistance of high thermal conductivity carbon/carbon composites by introducing carbon nanotubes

        In order to improve the thermal shock and ablation resistance of high thermal conductivity carbon/carbon composites, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced by electrophoretic deposition. After modifcation, the fexural strength of the composites increases by 53.0% due to the greatly strengthened interfaces. During thermal shock between 1100 °C and room temperature for 30 times, the strength continues to increase, attributed to the weakened interfaces in favor of fber and CNT pull-out. By introducing CNTs at interfaces, thermal conductivity of the composites along the fber axial direction decreases and that along the fber radial direction increases. As the thermal shock process prolongs, since the carbon structure integrity of CNT and matrix in the modifed composites is improved, the conductivity increases whatever the orientation is, until the thermal stress causes too many defects. As for the anti-ablation performance, the mass ablation rates of the CNT-modifed composites with fbers parallel to and vertical to the fame decrease by 69.6% and 43.9% respectively, and the diference in the mass ablation rate related with fber orientations becomes much less. Such performance improvement could be ascribed to the reduced oxidative damage and the enhanced interfaces.

        Noise-reduction Function and its Affecting Factors of Plant Communities

        In this study, we investigated the relationship between noise reduction and the community structure of nine groups of typical plant communities as well as the reduction in noise at different frequencies. The semantic differential method was adopted to explore the perception of noise reduction. The results indicated that there was a significantly positive correlation between noise reduction and coverage , a significantly negative correlation between noise reduction and bifurcate height, and a negative correlation between noise reduction and bare rate. However, there was no significant correlation between noise reduction and height, diameter at breast height, or crown width. The reduction of middle-frequency noise was better than that of low- and high-frequency noise. The indicators "quiet" and "calm" showed that plant communities could reduce the noise perceived by humans. However, overly dense woodland caused nervousness, fear, depression, and other negative effects. Relatively open environments and those with large forest gaps obtained the highest evaluation.

        Experiment and modeling of liquid-phase flow in a venturi tube using stereoscopic PIV

        Venturi tube is based on turbulent flow, whereby the microbubbles can be generated by the turbulent fragmentation. This phenomenon is common in several venturi bubblers used by the nuclear, aerospace and chemical industries. The first objective of this paper is to study the liquid-phase velocity field experimentally and develop correlations for the turbulent quantities. The second objective is to research velocity field characteristics theoretically. Stereoscopic PIV measurements for the velocity field have been analyzed and utilized to develop the turbulent kinetic energy in the venturi tube. The tracking properties of the tracer particles have been verified enough for us to analyze the turbulence field. The turbulence kinetic energy has a bimodal distribution trend. Also, the results of turbulence intensity along the horizontal direction is gradually uniform along the downstream. Both the mean velocity and the fluctuation velocity are proportional to the Reynolds number. Besides, the distribution trend of the mean velocity and the velocity fluctuation can be determined by the geometric parameters of the venturi tube. An analytical function model for the flow field has been developed to obtain the approximate analytical solutions. Good agreement is observed between the model predictions and experimental data.
