        Pavan: A Privacy-Preserving System For DB-as-a-Service

        Somayeh Sobati Moghadam,Amjad Fayoumi,Peyman Vafadoost 한국통신학회 2021 ICT Express Vol.7 No.2

In a cloud database system which employs the DataBase-as-a-Service model, security is a great challenge. Nevertheless, the current encryption systems are only partially homomorphic, which are designed to enable only one particular type of computation to be carried out on encrypted data. To address these concerns, we introduce Pavan, a system that securely stores data in a cloud database while still enabling encrypted data to be processed. Pavan enables query processing with an order-preserving partially homomorphic encryption scheme. We show that Pavan is a practical system that preserves data privacy with reasonable overhead for cloud outsourcing scenarios.

Developing a new model to predict mass transfer coefficient of salicylic acid adsorption onto IRA-93: Experimental and modeling

        Somayeh Kananpanah,Nader Dizadji,Hossein Abolghasemi,Babak Salamatinia 한국화학공학회 2009 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.26 No.5

An experimental breakthrough curve for Salicylic acid in an adsorption recovery process was determined by an anion-exchange resin IRA-93. The volumetric mass transfer coefficients were calculated by employing constant wave propagation theory. Meanwhile, the effects of volumetric feed flow rates on this break through curve and mass transfer coefficients at different flow rates were also studied in order to develop three new models to predict mass transfer coefficient. The results demonstrated that by the increase in the feed flow rates, the amount of adsorption reduces. However, while the volumetric feed flow rates increase the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficients will increase. This grows the feeling that the feed flow rate should be optimized. The optimum flow rate for the adsorption was found to be 7 mg/l in this study. In addition, three new models to predict the mass transfer coefficient in respect of feed rates were developed in this research work which showed very high fittings with R2>0.99. These models could fully support the experimental data obtained.

Plastic behavior of circular discs with temperature-dependent properties containing an elastic inclusion

        Somayeh Bagherinejad Zarandi,Yun-Che Wang,Olga V. Novozhilova 국제구조공학회 2016 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.58 No.4

Plastic behaviors, based on the von Mises yield criterion, of circular discs containing a purely elastic, circular inclusion under uniform temperature loading are studied with the finite element analysis. Temperature-dependent mechanical properties are considered for the matrix material only. In addition to analyzing the plane stress and plane strain disc, a 3D thin disc and cylinder are also analyzed to compare the plane problems. We determined the elastic irreversible temperature and global plastic collapse temperature by the finite element calculations for the plane and 3D problem. In addition to the global plastic collapse, for the elastically hard case, the plane stress problem and 3D thin disc may exhibit a local plastic collapse, i.e. significant pile up along the thickness direction, near the inclusion-matrix interface. The pileup cannot be correctly modeled by the plane stress analysis. Furthermore, due to numerical difficulties originated from large deformation, only the lower bound of global plastic collapse temperature of the plane stress problem can be identified. Without considerations of temperature-dependent mechanical properties, the von Mises stress in the matrix would be largely overestimated.

The demographic, clinical, and medical manifestations of pulmonary thromboembolism development in COVID-19

        Somayeh Sadeghi,Maryam Nasirian,Elaheh Keivany,Peiman Nasri,Maryam Sadat Mirenayat 대한혈액학회 2021 Blood Research Vol.56 No.4

Background Since the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), various clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to severe, life-threatening courses have been presented. It is well known that COVID-19 patients are at an increased risk of pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) development; however, the associated demographic, medical, and clinical factors for developing PTE remain unknown. The current study aimed to assess the characteristics of patients with PTE. Methods This case-control study was derived from an ongoing population-based investigation of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. The case group included 99 patients with PTE confirmed by computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA), and the controls (N=132) were age-matched patients selected from the PTE-suspected patients with a negative CTPA. The demographic, medical, and clinical characteristics of the study population were entered into the study checklist and compared. A logistic regression test was used to determine the factors associated with PTE development. Results Among the 13,099 admitted patients, 690 (5.26%) were suspected of having PTE according to their clinical manifestations. CTPA was performed for suspected cases, and PTE was confirmed in 132 patients (19.13%). Logistic regression assessments revealed that male gender (OR, 2.39; 95%CI, 1.38‒4.13), decreased oxygen saturation (OR, 2.33; 95%CI, 1.27‒4.26), and lower hemoglobin (OR, 0.83, 0.95), and albumin (OR, 0.31; 95%CI, 0.18‒0.53) levels were associated with PTE development. Conclusion PTE was confirmed in one-fifth of suspected patients who underwent CTPA imaging. Male sex, decreased oxygen saturation, and lower levels of hemoglobin and albumin were independent predictors of PTE in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

New cut-off point for D-dimer in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism during pregnancy

        Somayeh Sadeghi,Marjan Golshani,Bahareh Safaeian 대한혈액학회 2021 Blood Research Vol.56 No.3

Background Considering that pulmonary embolism (PE) is one of the leading causes of mortality among pregnant women and that the D-dimer level in pregnancy can be highly fluctuating, a new and reliable D-dimer reference value is essential to identifying PE in this group of patients. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic effect of D-dimer testing in pregnant women with suspected PE. Methods This study recruited 100 women with confirmed pregnancy or six weeks after delivery or abortion with suspected PE symptoms. Wells criteria, D-dimer values, and pregnancy trimesters were recorded. Definitive PE results were obtained using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) or pulmonary ventilation/perfusion scans. Results D-dimer cut-off point in PE diagnosis was higher than 1,447 g/L [sensitivity, 87.5%; specificity, 63.04%; area under the curve (AUC)=0.735; P=0.003]. In addition, the combination of Wells criteria with the D-dimer test indicated that the cut-off points of D-dimer in PE likely and unlikely women were 1,962 and 1,447 g/L, respectively, and had acceptable and significant diagnostic value in PE detection. In addition, the diagnostic value of D-dimer in pregnancy trimesters was not found to be significant (P>0.05). Conclusion The new cut-off points of 1,447 and 1,962 g/L were determined for D-dimer in pregnant women with likely and unlikely PE, respectively. Moreover, the new cut-off points in the first and second trimesters of pregnancy were 1,701 g/L and 1,451 g/L, respectively, which indicated no statistically acceptable diagnostic value.

"Ambiguity" as a Tool In creating Iranian Novel; Hidden Crescent

Somayeh Aghajnai(소마예아그하니) 한국외국어대학교 외국문학연구소 2017 외국문학연구 Vol.- No.67

Conflicts are one of the important elements in the development of a plot. In Hidden Crescent, Ali Asghar Shirzadi creates an atmosphere of conflict which is filled with ambiguity by using different devices. This paper examines how tools such as the co-presence of the author and fictional character, rhetorical techniques, anthroponymy of names and multiplicity of narrators and points of view help in creating this uncertainty. Al iAsghar Shirzadi has benefited from these measures in Hidden Crescent in showing Younis Bashiran’s internal conflicts. Bashiran has been in doubt with himself after fleeing the battlefield. He cannot decide whether it is right to stay at the warfront or leave it. Bashiran tells in first person narration of his escape from the battle and the consequent internal struggle to come to terms with his action. The uncertainty that penetrates various layers of the novel is finally resolved at the end of the novel when Bashiran’s questions go away and he finds that leaving the battlefield was wrong. 갈등은 이야기 전개에 중요한 요소이다. ( Somayeh Baniasad Azad ),( Saeed Ketabi ) 범태평양응용언어학회 2013 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.17 No.1

This study examined demotivational factors among Iranian and Japanese college teachers of English. To achieve the purpose, the study used a 35- item questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results were compared with the similar study in Japan by Sugino (2010). The findings of the study revealed that Iranian and Japanese lecturers are much similar regarding motivation and demotivation in their teaching. However, there is difference with respect to the top items causing demotivation. For Iranian teachers, the most demotivating items were ``No consistency in curriculum with clear goals``, ``No bonus, ``Little appreciation from the administration``, ``Employment system is unstable``, ``When students are not interested in studying``, and ``Lack of research fund``. Whereas, the top demotivating items for Japanese college teachers were: students using cell-phones in classes, students sleeping in class, students taking rebellious attitudes, long meeting hours, much paperwork, and ``fixed teaching method. Implications for curriculum development, working conditions, and educational authorities will be discussed.

Spatial inequalities and predictors of HIV/AIDS mortality risk in Hamadan, Iran: a retrospective cohort study

Somayeh Momenyan,Amir Kavousi 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the geographic variation of HIV/AIDS mortality risk and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection could help identify high-burden areas. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of predictors of the time interval between HIV diagnosis to death, while accounting for spatial correlations across counties, and to assess patterns of spatial inequalities in the risk of HIV/AIDS mortality in Hamadan Province, Iran. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on 585 patients. The outcome in this study was the time period between the date of HIV/AIDS diagnosis and the date of death. A Weibull regression model with spatial random effects was used. RESULTS: According to multivariate analysis, there were significant associations between age, tuberculosis co-infection, and marital status and the risk of death. In terms of spatial inequalities, a cluster of counties was identified with a somewhat higher death hazard in the north, northwest, northeast, and central regions. Additionally, a cluster with a somewhat lower hazard was identified in the south, southwest, southeast, and west regions. CONCLUSIONS: The spatial pattern of HIV/AIDS death risk could reflect inequalities in access to antiretroviral therapy and public health services. Our results underscore the importance of attention to vulnerable groups in urban areas.

Flavonoids Fraction of Mespilus Germanica Alleviates Insulin Resistance in Metabolic Syndrome Model of Ovariectomized Rats via Reduction in Tumor Necrosis Factor-α

        Somayeh Kouhestani,Samad Zare,Parvin Babaei 대한폐경학회 2018 대한폐경학회지 Vol.24 No.3

Objectives: The rate of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in women diagnosed as they age is one of the main concerns of health cares. Recently new strategies used to prevent progressions of MetS toward the diagnosis of diabetes have focused on plant flavonoids. This study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of flavonoids fraction of Mespilus germanica leaves (MGL) on MetS in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Methods: Twenty-four adult female Wistar rats, weighing 200 to 250 g, were divided into 3 groups: Sham surgery, OVX + Salin, or OVX + Flavonoid. Three weeks after ovariectomy, animals displayed MetS criteria received flavonoid injection (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) for 21 days. Then the body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, visceral fat, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, lipid profiles and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured. Results: Treatment with flavonoids fraction of MGL significantly decreased serum level of insulin (P = 0.011), glucose (P = 0.024), TNF-α (P = 0.010), also MetS Z score (P = 0.020) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (P = 0.007). Lipid profiles and visceral fat showed insignificant reduction. Conclusions: Flavonoids of MGL attenuates some of the MetS components possibly via reduction in TNF-α inflammatory cytokine.
