Boundary Element application for muffler design and noise source characterization
Benjamin Soenarko,Andrew F.Seybert 한국생산제조학회 2012 한국생산제조시스템학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.10
The Boundary Element Method (BEM) has been used extensively by many researchers in engineering. This paper presents applications of the BEM in muffler design and also in the determination of noise source characteristics in terms of acoustic properties. Mufflers are used in many applications in industry for noise reduction by attenuating the radiated sound through reactive effects (i.e. cancellation). The BEM calculation is compared with the plane wave theory where applicable and it is shown that a good agreement was obtained between the results. Moreover the occurrence of two and three-dimensional wave motion are well predicted by the BEM which are beyond the plane wave theory. Complex mufflers consisting of cavities, tubes, perforates, and porous materials can be handled by the BEM using multi-domain technique. The behavior of wave propagation in mufflers is illustrated using contour plots of sound pressure level. Another application of the BEM is presented for source characteristics identification. Using inverse solution technique the acoustic properties of the source are determined from the measurement of acoustic pressure in the designated field points.
