      • Influence of nitrogen fertilization and isoxaflutole on the nodulation of chickpea (Cicer arietinum)

        The effects of soil nitrate and the herbicide, isoxaflutole, on chickpea nodulation were examined in a glasshouse experiment. The treatments consisted of one isoxaflutole-tolerant and one isoxaflutole-sensitive chickpea cultivar, five nitrate concentrations (0, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 $mmol\;L^{-1}$), and three herbicide rates (0, 75 [the recommended rate], and 300 $g\;ha^{-1}$). The sensitive cultivar was more susceptible to isoxaflutole damage with an increasing herbicide rate and nitrate concentration, compared with the tolerant cultivar. Isoxaflutole at the recommended rate reduced the nodule dry weight of the sensitive cultivar by 51% and by 33% in the tolerant cultivar. The nodule dry weight of the sensitive cultivar was reduced by 28%, 40%, 64%, and 76% with the addition of the 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 $mmol\;L^{-1}$ nitrate concentrations, respectively. In comparison, the nodule dry weight of the tolerant cultivar was reduced by 50% and 79% at the 3.0 and 6.0 $mmol\;L^{-1}$ nitrate concentrations, respectively. In addition, the level of damage from increasing rates of isoxaflutole increased with the highest nitrate concentrations of 3.0 and 6.0 $mmol\;L^{-1}$, regardless of the cultivar. Isoxaflutole at the recommended application rate had a detrimental effect on the nodulation of both chickpea cultivars, but the isoxaflutole-tolerant cultivar suffered less injury than the sensitive one in relation to some growth parameters. The damage to chickpea from the recommended rate of isoxaflutole also increased with soils of higher nitrate content.

        Proton pump inhibitor intake negatively affects the osseointegration of dental implants: a retrospective study

        Objectives: This study sought to investigate the association between the systemic intake of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) and the early failure of dental implants. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study involving 1,918 dental implants in 592 patients (69 implants in 24 PPI users and 1,849 implants in 568 nonusers, respectively) was conducted. The effect of PPI intake on the osseointegration of dental implants was evaluated using patientand implant-level models. Results: Among 24 PPI users, two patients experienced implant failure, one of whom had three and the other of whom had one failed implant, respectively. Thus, the rate of failure for this population was 8.3%. Separately, 11 nonusers each experienced one implant failure, and the failure rate for these patients was 1.9%. Fisher’s exact test revealed statistically significant differences between PPI users and nonusers at the implant level (P=0.002) but failed to show any significance at the patient level (P=0.094). The odds of implant failure were 4.60 times greater among PPI users versus nonusers. Dental implants that were placed in patients using PPIs were found to be 4.30 times more likely to fail prior to loading. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that PPI intake may be associated with an increased risk of early dental implant failure.

      • Germination, emergence, and persistence of Sonchus oleraceus, a major crop weed in subtropical Australia

        Sonchus oleraceus (common sowthistle) is a dominant weed and has increased in prevalence in conservation cropping systems of the subtropical grain region of Australia. Four experiments were undertaken to define the environmental factors that favor its germination, emergence, and seed persistence. Seeds were germinated at constant temperatures between 5 and $35^{\circ}C$ and water potentials between 0 and -1.4 MPa. The maximum germination rate of 86-100% occurred at 0 and -0.2 MPa, irrespective of the temperature when exposed to light (12 h photoperiod light/dark), but the germination rate was reduced by 72% without light. At water potentials of -0.6 to -0.8 MPa, the germination rate was reduced substantially by higher temperatures; no seed germinated at a water potential >-1.0 MPa. Emergence and seed persistence were measured over 30 months following seed burial at 0 (surface), 1, 2, 5, and 10 cm depths in large pots that were buried in a south-eastern Queensland field. Seedlings emerged readily from the surface and 1 cm depth, with no emergence from below the 2 cm depth. The seedlings emerged during any season following rain but, predominantly, within 6 months of planting. Seed persistence was short-term on the soil surface, with 2% of seeds remaining after 6 months, but it increased with the burial depth, with 12% remaining after 30 months at 10 cm. Thus, a minimal seed burial depth with reduced tillage and increased surface soil water with stubble retention has favored the proliferation of this weed in any season in a subtropical environment. However, diligent management without seed replenishment will greatly reduce this weed problem within a short period.

      • Application Of A New Semi-Empirical Model For Forming Limit Prediction Of Sheet Material Including Superposed Loads Of Bending And Shearing

        The use of lightweight materials offers substantial strength and weight advantages in car body design. Unfortunately such kinds of sheet material are more susceptible to wrinkling, spring back and fracture during press shop operations. For characterization of capability of sheet material dedicated to deep drawing processes in the automotive industry, mainly Forming Limit Diagrams (FLD) are used. However, new investigations at the Institute for Metal Forming Technology have shown that High Strength Steel Sheet Material and Aluminum Alloys show increased formability in case of bending loads are superposed to stretching loads. Likewise, by superposing shearing on in plane uniaxial or biaxial tension formability changes because of materials crystallographic texture. Such mixed stress and strain conditions including bending and shearing effects can occur in deep-drawing processes of complex car body parts as well as subsequent forming operations like flanging. But changes in formability cannot be described by using the conventional FLC. Hence, for purpose of improvement of failure prediction in numerical simulation codes significant failure criteria for these strain conditions are missing. Considering such aspects in defining suitable failure criteria which is easy to implement into FEA a new semi-empirical model has been developed considering the effect of bending and shearing in sheet metals formability. This failure criterion consists of the combination of the so called cFLC (combined Forming Limit Curve), which considers superposed bending load conditions and the SFLC (Shear Forming Limit Curve), which again includes the effect of shearing on sheet metal’s formability.

        Comparing the precision of panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography in avoiding anatomical structures critical to dental implant surgery: A retrospective study

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between measurements made using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) based on certain anatomical landmarks of the jaws, with the goal of preventing complications due to inaccurate measurements in the pre-surgical planning phase of dental implant placement. Materials and Methods: A total of 56 individuals who underwent panoramic radiography and a CBCT evaluation before dental implant surgery were enrolled in the study. Measurements were performed to identify the shortest vertical distance between the alveolar crest and neighboring anatomical structures, including the maxillary sinus, nasal floor, mandibular canal, and foramen mentale. The differences between the measurements on panoramic radiography and CBCT images were statistically analyzed. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the measurements on panoramic radiography and CBCT for all anatomical structures (P<.05). The correlation coefficients (r) between the paired samples obtained from panoramic radiography and CBCT were closely correlated (P<.05), with r values varying from 0.921 and 0.979 for different anatomical regions. Conclusion: The results of this study support the idea that panoramic radiography might provide sufficient information on bone height for preoperative implant planning in routine cases or when CBCT is unavailable. However, an additional CBCT evaluation might be helpful in cases where a safety margin cannot be respected due to insufficient bone height.
