      • Lack of Association Between GSTM1 and GSTT1 Polymorphisms and Brain Tumour Risk

Sima, Xiu-Tian,Zhong, Wei-Ying,Liu, Jian-Gang,You, Chao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.1

Objective: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are important enzymes that are involved in detoxification of environmental carcinogens. Molecular epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate the association between GSTM1 and GSTT1 homozygous deletion polymorphisms and brain tumours but results have been conflicting. The aim of this study was to clarify this problem using a meta-analysis. Methods: A total of 9 records were identified by searching the PubMed and Embase databases. Fixed- and random-effects models were performed to estimate the pooled odds ratios. Results: No significant association was found between the GSTM1 and GSTT1 homozygous deletion polymorphisms and risk of brain tumours, including glioma and meningioma. Similar negative results were also observed in both population-based and hospital-based studies. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms may not be related to the development of brain tumours.

Evaluation of the accuracy of linear and angular measurements on panoramic radiographs taken at different positions

        Sima Nikneshan,Mohamad Sharafi,Naghmeh Emadi 대한영상치의학회 2013 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.43 No.3

Purpose: This study assessed the accuracy of linear and angular measurements on panoramic radiographs taken at different positions in vitro. Materials and Methods: Two acrylic models were fabricated from a cast with normal occlusion. Straight and 75 mesially and lingually angulated pins were placed, and standardized panoramic radiographs were taken at standard position, at an 8downward tilt of the occlusal plane compared to the standard position, at an 8upward tilt of the anterior occlusal plane, and at a 10downward tilt of the right and left sides of the model. On the radiographs, the length of the pins above (crown) and below (root) the occlusal plane, total pin length, crown-to-root ratio, and angulation of pins relative to the occlusal plane were calculated. The data were subjected to repeated measures ANOVA and LSD multiple comparisons tests. Results: Significant differences were noted between the radiographic measurements and true values in different positions on both models with linear (P⁄0.001) and those with angulated pins (P⁄0.005). No statistically significant differences were observed between the angular measurements and baselines of the natural head posture at different positions for the linear and angulated pins. Conclusion: Angular measurements on panoramic radiographs were sufficiently accurate and changes in the position of the occlusal plane equal to or less than 10had no significant effect on them. Some variations could exist in the pin positioning (head positioning), and they were tolerable while taking panoramic radiographs. Linear measurements showed the least errors in the standard position and 8upward tilt of the anterior part of the occlusal plane compared to other positions.

Does Turmeric/curcumin Supplementation Change Anthropometric Indices in Patients with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

( Sima Jafarirad ),( Anahita Mansoori ),( Ahmad Adineh ),( Yunes Panahi ),( Amir Hadi ),( Reza Goodarzi ) 한국임상영양학회 2019 Clinical Nutrition Research Vol.8 No.3

Curcumin is the principal polylphenol of turmeric that has been used to treat various disorders. However, its anti-obesity effects in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remain controversial. Therefore, we aimed to perform a meta-analysis on the effects of supplementation with turmeric/curcumin on body weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in these patients. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ISI Web of Science were searched until January 2019, without any restrictions. Clinical trials that reported body weight, BMI and WC in patients with NAFLD were included. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were pooled using a random-effects model. Eight studies (449 participants) fulfilled the eligibility criteria of the present meta-analysis. Overall, meta-analysis could not show any beneficial effect of turmeric/curcumin supplementation on body weight (WMD, -0.54 kg; 95% confidence interval [CI], -2.40, 1.31; p = 0.56; I2 = 0.0%), BMI (WMD, -0.21 kg/m2; 95% CI, -0.71, 0.28; p = 0.39; I2 = 0.0%) and WC (WMD, -0.88 cm; 95% CI, -3.76, 2.00; p = 0.54; I2 = 0.0%). Subgroup analysis based on participants' baseline BMI, type of intervention, and study duration did not show any significant association in all subgroups. The results showed that turmeric/curcumin supplementation had no significant effect on body weight, BMI and WC in patients with NAFLD. Further studies with large-scale are needed to find out possible anti-obesity effects of turmeric/curcumin.

      • Planning Flying Robot Navigation in a Three-dimensional Space by Optimaztion Combining Q-learning and Monte Carlo Algorithms

Sima Vosoghi Asl,Zohreh Davarzani,Soheila Staji 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.8 No.11

This article examines navigation of a flying robot inside a building environment in three dimensional spaces in which the size and location of some obstacles are not determined and other obstacles and target can be moving. This article suggests a new method by combining Q-learning algorithm and Monte Carlo algorithm on optimal navigation by the flying robot. The rewards are intended to be maximized when the robot flies in the right route; moreover, the maximum performance power would be measured according to the future predictions and the well-doing of that action would be also measured. Here, this method has been implemented with Webots simulator, and simulated data are analyzed by MATLAB. The simulation results show that control of the policy obtained from Q-learning and Monte Carlo methods is more efficient compared to traditional methods in controlling flying robot navigation.

Accuracy of linear measurement using cone-beam computed tomography at different reconstruction angles

        Sima Nikneshan,Shadi Hamidi Aval,Neema Bakhshalian,Shahriyar Shahab,Mahdis Mohammadpour,Soodeh Sarikhani 대한영상치의학회 2014 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.44 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of changing the orientation of a reconstructed image on the accuracy of linear measurements using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Forty-two titanium pins were inserted in seven dry sheep mandibles. The length of these pins was measured using a digital caliper with readability of 0.01 mm. Mandibles were radiographed using a CBCT device. When the CBCT images were reconstructed, the orientation of slices was adjusted to parallel (i.e., 0˚), +10˚, +12˚, -12˚, and -10˚with respect to the occlusal plane. The length of the pins was measured by three radiologists, and the accuracy of these measurements was reported using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA); p⁄0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The differences in radiographic measurements ranged from -0.64 to +0.06 at the orientation of -12˚, -0.66 to -0.11 at -10˚, -0.51 to +0.19 at 0˚, -0.64 to +0.08 at +10˚, and -0.64 to +0.1 at +12˚. The mean absolute values of the errors were greater at negative orientations than at the parallel position or at positive orientations. The observers underestimated most of the variables by 0.5-0.1 mm (83.6%). In the second set of observations, the reproducibility at all orientations was greater than 0.9. Conclusion: Changing the slice orientation in the range of -12˚to +12˚reduced the accuracy of linear measurements obtained using CBCT. However, the error value was smaller than 0.5 mm and was, therefore, clinically acceptable.

Suppression of Glow Corona on Streamer and Influence of Thin Wire on its Inception

Sima, Wenxia,Fan, Shuochao,Yang, Qing,Wang, Qi The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.4

Glow corona is a kind of streamer-free corona that can suppress upward leaders in transmission lines. Thus, it has good application potential in lightning protection. This paper investigates its corona characteristics. The suppression characteristic of glow corona on streamer is studied in air gap under negative DC voltage by wrapping thin wires on the electrode. The effect of thin wire winding patterns on the gap breakdown voltage is analyzed. Results are considered to be attributed to the inception condition of glow corona. Thus an inception test of glow corona is also conducted, and the inception voltage is obtained. Results show that the inception voltage decreases with short winding pitch. Thus an investigation on the inception of glow corona influenced by thin wire is conducted, and an influential factor is proposed to evaluate the influence. The inception regular of thin wire glow corona presented in this paper has certain reference value for the application of glow corona in transmission lines.

Microstructure Evolution Mechanism and Corrosion Behavior of Transient Liquid Phase Bonded 304L Stainless Steel

        Sima Mirzaei,Behzad Binesh 대한금속·재료학회 2021 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.27 No.9

Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of 304L austenitic stainless steel was carried out using MBF-20 interlayer at 1070 °Cwith different holding times. The effect of bonding time on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the TLP bondedsamples was investigated aiming to obtain the optimal bonding time. The results showed that isothermal solidification wascompleted within 45 min at 1070 °C and shorter holding times gave rise to the formation of intermetallic compounds at thejoint centerline. It was found that the solidification sequence in the joint region is as follows: (1) isothermal solidification ofγ solid solution, (2) formation of ternary eutectic of γ + Ni boride + Cr boride, and (3) formation of ternary eutectic of γ + Niboride + Ni–Si–B compound in the athermally solidified zone. Final stage of the phase formation at the joint centerline wasthe precipitation of Ni3Siparticles in the vicinity of eutectic microconstituents via a solid state transformation. ExtensiveCr-rich borides were formed in the diffusion affected zone as a result of B diffusion into the base metal during bondingprocess. Corrosion behavior of the TLP bonded samples was studied in 3.5% NaCl solution. The joint corrosion resistancewas improved with the increase of the bonding time to 30 min and then decreased when the holding time was prolonged.
