Dental students’ ability to detect maxillary sinus abnormalities: A comparison between panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography

Lucas de Paula Lopes Rosado,Izabele Sales Barbosa,Sibele Nascimento de Aquino,Rafael Binato Junqueira,Francielle Silvestre Verner 대한영상치의학회 2019 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.49 No.3

Purpose: To compare the diagnostic ability of undergraduate dental students to detect maxillary sinus abnormalities in panoramic radiographs (PR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study based on the evaluation of PR and CBCT images. A pilot study was conducted to determine the number of students eligible to participate in the study. The images were evaluated by 2 students, and 280 maxillary sinuses were assessed using the following categories: normal, mucosal thickening, sinus polyp, antral pseudocyst, nonspecific opacification, periostitis, antrolith, and antrolith associated with mucosal thickening. The reference standard was established by the consensus of 2 oral radiologists based on the CBCT images. The kappa test, receiver operating characteristic curves, and 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey-Kramer post-hoc test were employed. Results: Intraobserver and interobserver reliability showed agreement ranging from substantial (0.809) to almost perfect (0.922). The agreement between the students’ evaluations and the reference standard was reasonable (0.258) for PR and substantial (0.692) for CBCT. Comparisons of values of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy showed that CBCT was significantly better (P<0.05). Conclusion: CBCT was better than PR for the detection of maxillary sinus abnormalities by dental students. However, CBCT should only be requested after a careful analysis of PR by students and more experienced professionals.

Influence of pain-relieving therapies on inflammation and the expression of proinflammatory neuropeptides after dental bleaching treatment

da Silva Livia Maria Alves Valentim,Cintra Luciano Tavares Angelo,Gallinari Marjorie de Oliveira,Benetti Francine,Rahal Vanessa,Ervolino Edilson,de Alcântara Sibele,Briso André Luiz Fraga 대한치과보존학회 2020 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.45 No.2

Objectives: To minimize the tooth sensitivity caused by in-office bleaching, many dentists use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and topical desensitizing gels containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of these substances on inflammation and the expression of substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in pulp nerve fibers. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two rats were divided into 6 groups as follows: GI, control; GII, only dental bleaching; GIII, only ibuprofen; GIV, ibuprofen administered 30 minutes before and after the bleaching treatment and every 12 hours until the analysis; GV, only topical application of a desensitizing agent; and GVI, topical application of a desensitizing agent before dental bleaching. Placebo gel was applied to the upper left jaw and the bleaching agent was applied to the upper right jaw in all groups. Subsequently, the groups were divided into 3 subgroups based on the time of analysis: 0, 24, and 48 hours after bleaching (n = 8). The rats were euthanized and the maxillae were processed and evaluated by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Dunn test (p < 0.05). Results: In the bleaching groups, the inflammatory process and expression of neuropeptides decreased over time. The animals in which a desensitizing agent was applied showed better results within 24 hours. Conclusions: The use of a desensitizing agent had positive effects on inflammation and painrelated neuropeptide expression, minimizing the painful effects of dental bleaching treatment.

Assessment of infection control in oral radiology during the COVID-19 outbreak: An international collaborative study

        Rafaela C Santos,Larissa S Araujo,Rafael B Junqueira,Eliana D Costa,Fernanda M Pigatti,Kivanc Kamburoglu,Pedro HB Carvalho,Manuela LB Oliveira,Sibele N Aquino,Francielle S Verner Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2023 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.53 No.-

Purpose: In the context of COVID-19, studies evaluating the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control are relevant due to their high occupational exposure and risk, as well as their responsibility for disseminating information and good practices. This study evaluated the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control in the oral radiology field in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic on different continents. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved individuals who performed intraoral radiographic examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Questionnaire on Infection Control in Oral Radiology was administered virtually using a Google Form. Participants from different continents(the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania) were recruited. Data were subjected to descriptive analysis and simple and multiple binary regression (5%). Results: There were 582 valid answers, and 68.73% of the participants were from the Americas, 18.90% from Europe, and 12.37% from Asia. The median score for infection control protocols was 94 points for dental students and 104 points for dentists, and participants below the median were considered to have low adherence to infection control in oral radiology. Low access to infection control was found for 53.0% of dentists in the Americas, 34.0% from Europe, and 26.9% from Asia. Conclusion: The adherence to infection control protocols in oral radiology was low even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may help improve the awareness of students and professionals, since oral radiology routines have the potential for transmitting COVID-19.

      • Poster Session:PS 0191 ; Endocrinology : In Circulation Increased Antithyroid Peroxidase Antibody and Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Levels at Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

( Sibel Serin ),( Yildiz Okuturlar ),( Asuman Gedikbasi ),( Irem Kilic Utku ),( Sema Ucak Basat ),( Ozlem Harmankaya ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Objective: Frequent changes in parameters like blood pressure, plasma lipid changes, waist circumference which are accepted as a metabolic syndrome (MS) are observed in thyroid patients with hypothyroid. In this study we investigated serum levels of TPO which is the diagnosis of hypothyroid and prognosis criteria antithyroid peroxidase antibody (Anti-TPO) in patients with MS and we analysed the correlation with matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9) which is accepted as an indicator of infl ammation in MS. Method: 51 patients with MS and 35 controls were enrolled in the study. Age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and hypertension (HT) values of both group were recorded in the beginning. Medical records of HT were noted and cardiovascular diseases in their family were queried. Insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, TG, TSH and Anti-TPO levels were measured. Blood samples for measuring MMP- 9 were stored at -80°C. Measurement of MMP-9 was performed by using solid phase platinum ELISA kits (Biosource). Results: Study was performed with 51(59,3%) MS group and 35(40,7%) control group. Both Anti-TPO and MMP-9 levels of patients with MS were statistically and signifi cantly higher than the levels of control group (p<0.01 for both group). There is a statistically signifi cant correlation (positive, 83.2%) between MMP-9 and TPO in patients with MS (p<0.01). There is a statistically signifi cant correlation (positive, 37.5%) between MMP-9 and TPO in controls (p<0.05). Discussion: Researching Anti-TPO in patients with MS might be an indicator of higher rate of both hypothyroid and MS. High levels of both MMP-9 (>76 mg/ml) and TPO show that TPO can be used as a cheaper and more easily provided marker in patients with MS without acute thyroid. Anti-TPO follow-up might be necessary in MS diagnosis and monitoring.

Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Essential Oils Obtained from Oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) by Using Different Extraction Methods

        Sibel Karakaya,Sedef Nehir El,Nural Karagözlü,Serpil Şahin 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.6

In this study, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of essential oils obtained from oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) were determined by using solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME), supercritical fluid extraction, and conventional hydrodistillation (CH) methods. The inhibitory effects on the 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical of essential oils obtained from oregano by using SFME and CH were similar. However, essential oil extracted by CH showed greater (2.69 μmol/μL of oil) Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) than oregano oils obtained by SFME (P < .05). The difference between percentage inhibition and TEAC values most probably is due to the fact that undiluted and diluted samples are used in the percentage inhibition assay and the TEAC assay, respectively. TEAC values of oregano essential oils obtained by SFME at different microwave power levels were found to be similar and ranged from 0.72 to 0.84 μmol/μL of oil. Essential oils obtained by CH and SFME at different microwave powers inhibited the survival of Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium, and Escherichia coli O157:H7, whereas survival of Staphylococcus aureus was not influenced. In addition, oregano oil obtained by SFME at 40% power level did not show any inhibitory effect on E. coli O157:H7.
