Developing A Revitalization Planning and Design Guideline for Enhancing Land Use Performance of a Shrinking City

        Shu Yang,Jun-Hyun Kim,Wonmin Sohn,Zeenat Kotval-K 인간식물환경학회 2020 인간식물환경학회지 Vol.23 No.4

Background and objective: Land vacancy is a persistent issue inmost urban areas in the United States, yet few case studies have examined how vacant lots are used and the functions they serve in local communities. The purposes of this study were to provide a new revitalization planning and design proposal for the Durant-Tuuri-Mott (DTM) target area in the shrinking city of Flint, MI, USA, and to assess the final planning and design guideline through an analysis of vacant land redevelopment alternatives. Methods: For developing a revitalization planning and design guideline, this study developed several design modules with three main design themes. Then, landscape performance of the final design proposals was analyzed by three development scenarios, based on implementation level: 100%, 75%, and 50%. These development scenarios were based on the local context and different implementation budgets needed to adopt the proposed design modules. To generate a comprehensive development plan by optimizing design module allocation in the study area, this research employed a system-oriented approach, analyzing the existing cultural, natural, and built environments. A community participant process was adopted to collect stakeholders’ opinions on future development. Results: By utilizing landscape performance metrics to quantify the environmental, social, and economic benefits, this study developed optimized development scenarios and a master plan for the reuse and redevelopment of existing vacant lots across DTM neighborhoods and analyzed the benefits of each. Conclusion: This research offers a flexible design method for balancing objectives in vacant land redevelopment that can be applied in other shrinking cities.

Numerical investigation of effects of rotating downdraft on tornado-like-vortex characteristics

        Shuyang Cao,Mengen Wang,Jinwei Zhu,Jinxin Cao,Tetsuro Tamura,Qingshan Yang 한국풍공학회 2018 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.26 No.3

Appropriate modeling of a tornado-like vortex is a prerequisite when studying the near-ground wind characteristics of a tornado and tornado-induced wind loads on structures. Both Ward- and ISU-type tornado simulators employ guide vanes to induce angular momentum to converge flow in order to generate tornado-like vortices. But in the Ward-type simulator, the guide vanes are mounted near the ground while in the ISU-type they are located at a high position to allow vertical circulation of flow that creates a rotating downdraft to generate a tornado-like vortex. In this study, numerical simulations were performed to reproduce tornado-like vortices using both Ward-type and ISU-type tornado simulators, from which the effects of rotating downdraft on the vortex characteristics were clarified. Particular attention was devoted to the wander of tornado-like vortices, and their dependences on swirl ratio and fetch length were investigated. The present study showed that the dynamic vortex structure depends significantly on the vortex-generating mechanism, although the time- averaged structure remains similar. This feature should be taken into consideration when tornado-like-vortex simulators are utilized to investigate tornado-induced wind forces on structures.

      • Knowledge Diffusion of User Innovation Community Based on BBV Weighted Network

Shuyang Jiang,Yaming Zhuang 제어로봇시스템학회 2019 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2019 No.10

As knowledge constitutes an important innovative force, it is significant to understand the performance of knowledge diffusion in user innovation community. In this paper, we use the model of knowledge diffusion based on BBV weighted network, which introduces the effects of different network structures, knowledge absorption capacity and the degree of interaction between community users and managers on knowledge diffusion. The results show that the BBV weighted network is easier to accelerate knowledge diffusion, and the community knowledge variance is smaller. Knowledge absorptive capacity of community users is conducive to knowledge growth, but knowledge variance increases accordingly. If the interaction between community users and managers is maintained at a moderate level, it will help to reduce the knowledge variance. In fact, if these factors are neglected, it is difficult to predict the process and results of knowledge diffusion correctly.

Numerical study of wind profiles over simplified water waves

Shuyang Cao,Enzhen Zhang,Liming Sun,Jinxin Cao 한국풍공학회 2015 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.21 No.3

Vertical profiles of mean and fluctuating wind velocities over water waves were studied, by performing Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) on a fully developed turbulent boundary layer over simplified water waves. The water waves were simplified to two-dimensional, periodic and non-evolving. Different wave steepness defined by a /λ ( a : wave amplitude; λ : wavelength) and wave age defined by c/Ub (c: phase velocity of the wave; Ub : bulk velocity of the air) were considered, in order to elaborate the characteristics of mean and fluctuating wind profiles. Results shows that, compared to a static wave, a moving wave plays a lesser aerodynamic role as roughness as it moves downstream slower or a little faster than air, and plays more aerodynamic roles when it moves downstream much faster than air or moves in the opposite direction to air. The changes of gradient height, power law index, roughness length and friction velocity with wave age and wave amplitude are presented, which shed light on the wind characteristics over real sea surfaces for wind engineering applications.

From Rags to Riches: Business Model Innovation Shifts in the Ecosystem of the Chinese Super League

Shuyang Liu,James Skinner,Anna Grosman 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2022 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.7 No.3

The Chinese Super League (CSL) has witnessed unprecedented growth in recent years via evolutions in Chinese football clubs’ business models and the league environment. This paper analyses business model innovation (BMI) in the light of changing ecosystem factors via a case study of the Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao FC. It analyses the types of BMI and finds that BMI constancy and novelty are key to the club’s success. The study identifies policy and investors as the two ecosystem factors with the most significant influence on the club’s BMI. We argue that CSL clubs have unique and under-rated value capture structures, where the value is captured by their investors rather than by the clubs themselves. Being sensitive to the ecosystem is another key factor and we give guidance on how to anticipate ecosystem changes and adjust business models accordingly. This can be generalized to other organizations and industries.

Whether Environmental Regulation Can Improve the Quality of Economic Development – Taking Shandong Province as an example

Wang Shuyang,Chen Chao 부산대학교 중국연구소 2023 Journal of China Studies Vol.26 No.3

Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policies, Chinese economy has rapidly advanced towards the second-largest in the world. However, at the same time of rapid economic development, environmental pollution, excessive energy consumption and other problems have also become increasingly prominent. Environmental pollution, in particular, contributes approximately 8-15% of China's economic losses. Shandong, a northern Chinese province with a heavy industrial presence, is also grappling with severe environmental pollution challenges. To solve the problems, Shandong has to get rid of the "high energy consumption, high pollution, high emissions and low efficiency" type of economic development mode, then turn to the stage of high-quality economic development. In this process, how to achieve the coordinated development between the improvement of the quality of economic development and environmental improvement has become the focus of attention of all sectors of society. Bring environmental regulation into force is one of the important means to improve environmental problems. Whether the role of environmental regulation contributes to the improvement of the quality of economic development, and how environmental regulation affects the quality of economic development are the key research directions in the field of environmental economics at present. Therefore, this study takes Shandong Province of China as the research object, attempting to answer the above questions through theoretical research and empirical analysis. To calculate the comprehensive index of economic development quality and environmental regulation, the statistical index data of Shandong Province from 1994 to 2019 is used by means of the entropy weight method. Besides, an empirical model was also established in order to verify the impact and internal mechanism of environmental regulation on the economic development quality of Shandong Province. The research shows that there exists a U-shaped relationship between environmental regulation and the quality of economic development in Shandong Province, that is, strengthening environmental regulation at the beginning will inhibit the quality of economic development in Shandong Province, but when the intensity of environmental regulation is increased to a certain extent, environmental regulation will promote its improvement, instead. In addition, the core conclusion still holds after the explanatory variable environmental regulation was replaced. The transmission mechanism analysis shows that environmental regulation can improve the quality of economic development in Shandong Province through green technology innovation effect, industrial upgrading effect and productivity effect, but among of which the green technology innovation effect is relatively more significant. Therefore, it is suggested that the government departments of Shandong Province should further improve the environmental regulation policy, rationally formulate the intensity of environmental regulation; it should improve the independent innovation system, guide the upgrading of industrial structure, raise production efficiency, and give full play to the effect of environmental regulation in promoting the quality improvement of economic development.

Numerical studies on non-shear and shear flows past a 5:1 rectangular cylinder

        Qiang Zhou,Shuyang Cao,Zhiyong Zhou 한국풍공학회 2013 한국풍공학회지 Vol.17 No.4

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.
