        Blind Quality Metric via Measurement of Contrast, Texture, and Colour in Night-Time Scenario

        Night-time image quality evaluation is an urgent requirement in visual inspection. The lighting environment of night-time results in low brightness, low contrast, loss of detailed information, and colour dissonance of image, which remains a daunting task of delicately evaluating the image quality at night. A new blind quality assessment metric is presented for realistic night-time scenario through a comprehensive consideration of contrast, texture, and colour in this article. To be specific, image blocks’ color-gray-difference (CGD) histogram that represents contrast features is computed at first. Next, texture features that are measured by the mean subtracted contrast normalized (MSCN)-weighted local binary pattern (LBP) histogram are calculated. Then statistical features in Lαβ colour space are detected. Finally, the quality prediction model is conducted by the support vector regression (SVR) based on extracted contrast, texture, and colour features. Experiments conducted on NNID, CCRIQ, LIVE-CH, and CID2013 databases indicate that the proposed metric is superior to the compared BIQA metrics.

        Parental Involvement, Children’s Learning Needs and Reading Motivation of Young Chinese EFL Readers

        본 연구의 목적은 부모의 학습관여가 아동의 영어독해능력과 학습동기에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보는 데에 있다. 지금까지의 아동영어교육은 학교맥락에서 연구되어왔으며, 가정의 교육환경에 대해서는 본격적으로 논의된 바 없다. 이러한 연구의 필요성을 토대로 본 연구에서는 중국인 아동영어 학습자를 대상으로 부모의 자녀의 학습관여, 아동의 학습욕 구, 모국어 외국어 읽기 동기를 측정하였다. 278명의 초등학생과 학부모를 대상으로 설문과 영어 읽기 검사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 부모의 학습관여는 아동의 읽기동기와 읽기성취에 주요한 역할을 하는 것으로 드러났다. 반면 부모의 교육배경이나 아동의 성별과는 유의미한 상관관계가 나타나지 않았다. 아동들은 소속감에 대한 욕구에 가장 큰 만족감을 느끼 고, 존중감의 욕구에 대해 가장 낮은 만족감을 보였다. 다중회귀분석결과 첫째. 사교육비와 부모관여는 아동의 독해능력을 예측하는데 다소 낮은 요인이었고, 둘째, 자기 실행 욕구는 내적읽기 동기의 가장 큰 요인이었으며, 학부모의 관여는 영어 읽기 동기보다, 모국어 읽기 동기에 더 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 부모의 교육수준과 사교육비지 출은 아동의 내적 읽기 동기에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. Studies on teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in children have extensively focused on the school context, but the home environment has not been fully studied. In the present study, parental involvement, children’s learning needs, and reading motivation were measured to explain young Chinese EFL readers’ behaviors. The participants were 278 primary school students, together with their parents, who completed questionnaires and an English reading test. The results revealed that parental involvement had a prevalent role in facilitating children’s reading motivation and achievement, and it did not vary in terms of parents’ educational backgrounds and children’s gender. The children reported the highest degree of satisfaction with belonging needs, but the lowest with esteem needs. Multiple regression analyses indicated that (1) the extra instructional spend and parental involvement were weak predictors of children’s EFL reading performance; (2) self-actualization needs were found to be the best predictor of intrinsic reading motivation, and parental involvement had a stronger impact on children’s first language intrinsic reading motivation than on EFL; and (3) neither parents’ educational background nor extra instructional spend influenced children’s EFL intrinsic reading motivation.

        LncRNA DLG1-AS1 Promotes Cancer Cell Proliferation in Triple Negative Breast Cancer by Downregulating miR-203

        Purpose: The oncogenic role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) DLG1-AS1 has been studied in cervical cancer, but its involvement in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is unknown. Here, we aimed to investigate the possible role and underlying mechanism of DLG1-AS1 in TNBC. Methods: The differential expression of DLG1-AS1 and miR-203 in TNBC tissues and cells was determined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction assays. Correlations between DLG1-AS1 and miR-203 expression across TNBC tissues and non-tumor tissues were analyzed using Spearman rank correlation test. The effects of DLG1-AS1 and miR-203 overexpression, and DLG1-AS1 knockdown on the metastasis of BT-549 and MDA-MB-157 cells were evaluated using a transwell assay. The effects of DLG1-AS1 and miR-203 overexpression on the proliferation of BT-549 and MDA-MB-157 cells were evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8 and cell colony formation assays. Results: We found that DLG1-AS1 was upregulated whereas miR-203 was downregulated in tumor tissues of patients and in TNBC cells compared to the adjacent healthy tissues of patients with TNBC and in normal breast MCF-10A cells, respectively. Further, DLG1-AS1 and miR-203 were inversely correlated in tumor tissues. DLG1-AS1 overexpression mediated downregulation of miR-203, whereas miR-203 overexpression had no significant effects on DLG1-AS1 expression. DLG1-AS1 expression was increased, whereas miR-203 levels were decreased with advancing clinical stages. TNBC cell migration was promoted by DLG1-AS1 overexpression and inhibited by miR-203 overexpression or DLG1-AS1 knockdown. Moreover, TNBC cell proliferation was promoted by DLG1-AS1 overexpression and inhibited by miR-203 overexpression. Further, miR-203 overexpression reduced the effects of DLG1-AS1 overexpression. Conclusion: These results indicate that DLG1-AS1 may promote cancer cell proliferation in TNBC by downregulating the tumor suppressor miR-203.

        From the stage to reality: Indigenization of The Vagina Monologues in China as feminist activism

        The Vagina Monologues, the world-famous feminist play, was introduced to China in 2003 and has been recreated and performed many times by young feminist activists with respect to Chinese women’s issues over the past 20 years. By demonstrating the special experiences and examples of different Chinese versions and performances of The Vagina Monologues in the 2010s, this article is an attempt to explore the indigenization process of the play in the Chinese context. First, it looks at its experimental performance for rural people in the village of Zhuhai; then it focuses on the emerging participation by several troupes of LGBT groups and other gender minorities; and last, it illustrates the social influence of ‘The Vagina Event’ online and feminist street action outside theaters and campuses. The article thereby argues that the performance of different local versions of The Vagina Monologues can be regarded as important in feminist activism in contemporary China.

      • Highly Stable Au Nanoparticles with Tunable Spacing and Their Potential Application in Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensors

        <P>Colloidal Au-amplified surface plasmon resonance (SPR), like traditional SPR, is typically used to detect binding events on a thin noble metal film. The two major concerns in developing colloidal Au-amplified SPR lie in 1) the instability, manifested as a change in morphology following immersion in organic solvents and aqueous solutions, and 2) the uncontrollable interparticle distance, determining probe spacing and inducing steric hindrance between neighboring probe molecules. This may introduce uncertainties into such detecting techniques, degrade the sensitivity, and become the barricade hampering colloidal Au-based transducers from applications in sensing. In this paper, colloidal Au-amplified SPR transducers are produced by using ultrathin Au/Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanocomposite films via a radio frequency magnetron co-sputtering method. Deposited Au/Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanocomposite films exhibit superior stability, and average interparticle distances between Au nanoparticles with similar average sizes can be tuned by changing surface coverage. These characteristics are ascribed to the spacer function and rim confinement of dielectric Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> and highlight their advantages for application in optimal nanoparticle-amplified SPR, especially when the probe size is smaller than the target molecule size. This importance is demonstrated here for the binding of protein (streptavidin) targets to the probe (biotin) surface. In this case, the dielectric matrix Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> is a main contributor, behaving as a spacer, tuning the concentration of Au nanoparticles, and manipulating the average interparticle distance, and thus guaranteeing an appropriate number of biotin molecules and expected near-field coupling to obtain optimal sensing performance.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>An innovative colloidal Au-amplified surface plasmon resonance (SPR) transducer is achieved by a using remarkably stable and space-tunable Au/Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanocomposite film.       • Load Factor, Service Failures and Customer Complaints in US Airline Industry

        Comprehension of customer complaints is regarded as an essential factor for firms to recognize the service problem to recover the service. This study objective is to investigate the relationship between load factor, service failures, and customer complaints in the US airline industry by analyzing the panel data. In particular, the lagged effect and nonlinear relationship between load factor, service failure and customer complaints. The results reveal that the load factor has a positive effect on service failure. Furthermore, the load factor and the indicators of service failure which are airline cancellation, delay, and mishandled baggage have a lagged effect on customer complaints. Finally, the airline cancellations, delay, and load factor show the non-linear relationship with customer complaints in the airline industry. Contributions of this paper are twofold. First, the effects of load factor and service failures on customer complaints were able to be detected accurately, by using longitudinal data. Secondly, empirical results provide implications to the existing body of knowledge on service failure and service quality, and proposed findings can provide implications for airline management.

        Binomial Distribution Based Reputation for WSNs: A Comprehensive Survey

        Most secure solutions like cryptography are software based and they are designed to mainly deal with the outside attacks for traditional networks, but such soft security is hard to be implemented in wireless sensor networks to counter the inside attacks from internal malicious nodes. To address this issue, reputation has been introduced to tackle the inside malicious nodes. Reputation is essentially a stimulating mechanism for nodes’ cooperation and is employed to detect node misbehaviors and improve the trust-worthiness between individual nodes. Among the reputation models, binomial distribution based reputation has many advantages such as light weight and ease of implementation in resource-constraint sensor nodes, and accordingly researchers have proposed many insightful related methods. However, some of them either directly use the modelling results, apply the models through simple modifications, or only use the required components while ignoring the others as an integral part of the whole model, this topic still lacks a comprehensive and systematical review. Thus the motivation of this study is to provide a thorough survey concerning each detailed functional components of binomial distribution based reputation for wireless sensor networks. In addition, based on the survey results, we also argue some open research problems and suggest the directions that are worth future efforts. We believe that this study is helpful to better understanding the reputation modeling mechanism and its components for wireless sensor networks, and can further attract more related future studies.

        Stabilization of Chinese Gallnut (Galla Chinensis) Tannins by Spray-Drying Microencapsulation for Natural Hair Coloring

        Chinese gallnut (Galla chinensis) is rich in hydrolyzable tannins, which, when mordanted with ferrous ions,produces intense black color on keratinous fiber and makes it a desirable natural hair dye in Asian countries. However,extracted tannins from Chinese gallnut are susceptible to chemical degradation by physicochemical factors (heat, UV, andhigh pH) that limited the utilization and commercialization of this plant colorant in color cosmetics. Hence, this study wasaimed to improve the storage and application stability of Chinese gallnut extract by spray-drying microencapsulation. Different combinations of maltodextrin (MD) and gum arabic (GA) were used as encapsulating agents and the effects on theencapsulation efficiency, morphology, physicochemical properties, in vitro toxicity, and stability were investigated. Theresults showed that an increase of MD proportions in the wall matrix resulted in the production of more spherical shapedparticles with larger size, decreased bulk density, and improved solubility in water. Furthermore, microcapsules covered withMD alone showed the maximum stability with respect to heat, UV, and formulation at alkaline pH. When applied for dyeingof human gray hairs, intense black color could be achieved by using the MD-covered microcapsule formulations and thedyeings are stable to multiple washings and simulated sunlight. Therefore, this study examines a promising strategy forstabilizing tannin-rich extract from Chinese gallnut while maintaining its dyeing efficiency, which will in turn promote itsutilization in hair coloring cosmetics.

        Power Saving and Improving the Throughput of Spectrum Sharing in Wideband Cognitive Radio Networks

        This paper considers a wideband cognitive radio network which can simultaneously sense multiple narrowband channels and thus aggregate the detected available channels for transmission and proposes a novel cognitive radio system that exhibits improved sensing throughput and can save power consumption of secondary user (SU) compared to the conventional cognitive radio system studied so far. More specifically, under the proposed cognitive radio system, we study the problem of designing the optimal sensing time and power allocation strategy, in order to maximize the ergodic throughput of the proposed cognitive radio system under two different schemes, namely the wideband sensing-based spectrum sharing scheme and the wideband opportunistic spectrum access scheme. In our analysis, besides the average interference power constraint at primary user, the average transmit power constraint of SU is also considered for the two schemes and then a subgradient algorithm is developed to obtain the optimal sensing time and the corresponding power allocation strategy. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to verify the performance of the two proposed schemes.
