Multi-Cattle Tracking Algorithm with Enhanced Trajectory Estimation in Precision Livestock Farms

        Shujie Han,Alvaro Fuentes,Sook Yoon,Jongbin Park,Dong Sun Park (사)한국스마트미디어학회 2024 스마트미디어저널 Vol.13 No.2

In precision cattle farm, reliably tracking the identity of each cattle is necessary. Effective tracking of cattle within farm environments presents a unique challenge, particularly with the need to minimize the occurrence of excessive tracking trajectories. To address this, we introduce a trajectory playback decision tree algorithm that reevaluates and cleans tracking results based on spatio-temporal relationships among trajectories. This approach considers trajectory as metadata, resulting in more realistic and accurate tracking outcomes. This algorithm showcases its robustness and capability through extensive comparisons with popular tracking models, consistently demonstrating the promotion of performance across various evaluation metrics that is HOTA, AssA, and IDF1 achieve 68.81%, 79.31%, and 84.81%.

      • Non-linear data association method for cow tracking

        Shujie Han,Alvaro Fuentes,Jongbin Park,Sook Yoon,Dong Sun Park 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 각 지부별 자료집 Vol.2021 No.12

Multi-objects tracking (MOT) is an important basic research area in computer vision in recent years. In particular, pedestrian tracking and vehicle tracking are very popular applications in MOT. In this paper, we perform MOT on cows, In this MOT task we address the following challenges: deformation and frequent occlusion. To solve deformation, we proposed a deep CNN model with SPP-Net as backbone to extract a feature vector of every cow. To solve occlusion, we use the ensemble Kalman filter that suitable for non-linear motion model to predict the attributes of bounding boxes directly. Our experiments reveal that nonlinear motion model and fixed deep features are more suitable on cows dataset with video sequences.

Multi-Cattle tracking with appearance and motion models in closed barns using deep learning

        Shujie Han,박동선,Alvaro Fuentes,윤숙,박종빈 (사)한국스마트미디어학회 2022 스마트미디어저널 Vol.11 No.8

Precision livestock monitoring promises greater management efficiency for farmers and higher welfare standards for animals. Recent studies on video-based animal activity recognition and tracking have shown promising solutions for understanding animal behavior. To achieve that, surveillance cameras are installed diagonally above the barn in a typical cattle farm setup to monitor animals constantly. Under these circumstances, tracking individuals requires addressing challenges such as occlusion and visual appearance, which are the main reasons for track breakage and increased misidentification of animals. This paper presents a framework for multi-cattle tracking in closed barns with appearance and motion models. To overcome the above challenges, we modify the DeepSORT algorithm to achieve higher tracking accuracy by three contributions. First, we reduce the weight of appearance information. Second, we use an Ensemble Kalman Filter to predict the random motion information of cattle. Third, we propose a supplementary matching algorithm that compares the absolute cattle position in the barn to reassign lost tracks. The main idea of the matching algorithm assumes that the number of cattle is fixed in the barn, so the edge of the barn is where new trajectories are most likely to emerge. Experimental results are performed on our dataset collected on two cattle farms. Our algorithm achieves 70.37%, 77.39%, and 81.74% performance on HOTA, AssA, and IDF1, representing an improvement of 1.53%, 4.17%, and 0.96%, respectively, compared to the original method.

Principals’ perceptions of effective teaching: A survey of Chinese school principals

Shujie Liu,Jian Wang,Hongmei Liang 한국교육개발원 2015 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.12 No.2

Principals’ beliefs of effective teaching presumably shape their efforts to recruit teachers, evaluate teaching quality, support teachers to develop their teaching practices, and nurture the professional environment that promotes high the teaching quality in their schools. Drawing on survey data from 314 Chinese principals, this study examines principals’ perceptions of effective teaching and compares them with those of Chinese teachers and U.S. school principals in the literature. The study found that Chinese principals believed effective teaching practices to be those that align lesson plans with student learning styles, engage students actively in the learning process, offer clear, specific, and timely feedback, treat all students with respect, and maintain a physical and emotional safe environment for learning. These ideas are consistent with Chinese teachers’ perceptions about effective teaching but are clearly differentiated from those of U.S. principals. These perceptions were varied as participants had different years of administrative experiences, worked in urban or rural schools, and in schools with different levels of student performance.

Response Surface Methodology for Optimizing the Preparation Process of Cellulose Acetate/Polylactic Acid Nonwoven Surgical Gown Material

        Shujie Zhang,Lisong Fu,Zhaowei Yang,Mengke Jing,Ziwei Zhang,Shijian Xiang,Rui Wang 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.4

In view of the problems that traditional woven surgical gowns are prone to cross infection in blocking blood andliquid spillage, cellulose acetate (CA)/polylactic acid (PLA) nonwoven materials were prepared to improve the functionalrequirements of surgical materials in combination with the rapidly developing green fibers. Fiber mixing ratio, fiber webareal weight and water jet pressure were selected to optimize the preparation process of cellulose acetate/polylactic acid (CA/PLA) nonwoven materials with moisture permeability and filtration efficiency. The results showed that the fiber mixing ratiowas 49:51, and the fiber web areal weight was 130 g/m2, and the water jet pressure was 7 MPa. Under this process, moisturepermeability is 5240.86 g/(m2·h), and the filtration efficiency is 38.12 %, which is close to the theoretical value. It shows thatthe response surface method has practical application value, indicating that the response surface method has practicalapplication value, and can provide a theoretical basis for the preparation process parameters of barrier and comfort nonwovensurgical gowns at the same time.

Teacher characteristics for success in the classroom: Chinese principals’ perceptions for hiring decisions

        Shujie Liu,Caixiang Liu,James Stronge,Xianxuan Xu 서울대학교 교육연구소 2016 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.17 No.1

Two research questions guided this study of teacher selection: (a) What characteristics do Chinese principals look for when hiring teachers? And (b) what is the effect of participants’ gender, experience, or school location on perceived characteristics of effective teacher candidates in hiring? Both interviews and a questionnaire survey were used to collect data from a southwest city of Shandong Province, China. In this mixed design study, quantitative results were consistent with the qualitative results. Additionally, the study results are intended to help readers better understand school principals’ perceived characteristics of effective teachers in a Chinese context and provides a framework for future comparative research between China and the USA.

Structure-Activity Relationship and Evaluation of Phenethylamine and Tryptamine Derivatives for Affinity towards 5-Hydroxytryptamine Type 2A Receptor

        ( Shujie Wang ),( Anlin Zhu ),( Suresh Paudel ),( Choon-gon Jang ),( Yong Sup Lee ),( Kyeong-man Kim ) 한국응용약물학회 2023 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.31 No.2

Among 14 subtypes of serotonin receptors (5-HTRs), 5-HT2AR plays important roles in drug addiction and various psychiatric disorders. Agonists for 5-HT2AR have been classified into three structural groups: phenethylamines, tryptamines, and ergolines. In this study, the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of phenethylamine and tryptamine derivatives for binding 5-HT2AR was determined. In addition, functional and regulatory evaluation of selected compounds was conducted for extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) and receptor endocytosis. SAR studies showed that phenethylamines possessed higher affinity to 5-HT2AR than tryptamines. In phenethylamines, two phenyl groups were attached to the carbon and nitrogen (R3) atoms of ethylamine, the backbone of phenethylamines. Alkyl or halogen groups on the phenyl ring attached to the β carbon exerted positive effects on the binding affinity when they were at para positions. Oxygen-containing groups attached to R3 exerted mixed influences depending on the position of their attachment. In tryptamine derivatives, tryptamine group was attached to the β carbon of ethylamine, and ally groups were attached to the nitrogen atom. Oxygen-containing substituents on large ring and alkyl substituents on the small ring of tryptamine groups exerted positive and negative influence on the affinity for 5-HT2AR, respectively. Ally groups attached to the nitrogen atom of ethylamine exerted negative influences. Functional and regulatory activities of the tested compounds correlated with their affinity for 5-HT2AR, suggesting their agonistic nature. In conclusion, this study provides information for designing novel ligands for 5-HT2AR, which can be used to control psychiatric disorders and drug abuse.

Biased Dopamine D2 Receptors Exhibit Distinct Intracellular Trafficking Properties and ERK Activation in Different Subcellular Domains

        ( Shujie Wang ),( Lulu Peng ),( Kyeong-man Kim ) 한국응용약물학회 2024 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.32 No.1

Biased signaling or functional selectivity refers to the ability of an agonist or receptor to selectively activate a subset of transducers such as G protein and arrestin in the case of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Although signaling through arrestin has been reported from various GPCRs, only a few studies have examined side-by-side how it differs from signaling via G protein. In this study, two signaling pathways were compared using dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) mutants engineered via the evolutionary tracer method to selectively transduce signals through G protein or arrestin (D2G and D2Arr, respectively). D2G mediated the inhibition of cAMP production and ERK activation in the cytoplasm. D2Arr, in contrast, mediated receptor endocytosis accompanied by arrestin ubiquitination and ERK activation in the nucleus as well as in the cytoplasm. D2Arr-mediated ERK activation occurred in a manner dependent on arrestin3 but not arrestin2, accompanied by the nuclear translocation of arrestin3 via importin1. D2R-mediated ERK activation, which occurred in both the cytosol and nucleus, was limited to the cytosol when cellular arrestin3 was depleted. This finding supports the results obtained with D2Arr and D2G. Taken together, these observations indicate that biased signal transduction pathways activate distinct downstream mechanisms and that the subcellular regions in which they occur could be different when the same effectors are involved. These findings broaden our understanding on the relation between biased receptors and the corresponding downstream signaling, which is critical for elucidating the functional roles of biased pathways.

Quantum spin Hall state in monolayer 1T'-WTe2

        Tang, Shujie,Zhang, Chaofan,Wong, Dillon,Pedramrazi, Zahra,Tsai, Hsin-Zon,Jia, Chunjing,Moritz, Brian,Claassen, Martin,Ryu, Hyejin,Kahn, Salman,Jiang, Juan,Yan, Hao,Hashimoto, Makoto,Lu, Donghui,Moore NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP 2017 NATURE PHYSICS Vol.13 No.7

<P>A quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator is a novel two-dimensional quantum state of matter that features quantized Hall conductance in the absence of a magnetic field, resulting from topologically protected dissipationless edge states that bridge the energy gap opened by band inversion and strong spin-orbit coupling(1,2). By investigating the electronic structure of epitaxially grown monolayer 1T'-WTe2 using angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and first-principles calculations, we observe clear signatures of topological band inversion and bandgap opening, which are the hallmarks of a QSH state. Scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements further confirm the correct crystal structure and the existence of a bulk bandgap, and provide evidence for a modified electronic structure near the edge that is consistent with the expectations for a QSH insulator. Our results establish monolayer 1T'-WTe2 as a new class of QSH insulator with large bandgap in a robust two-dimensional materials family of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs).</P>
