        The mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity of SnO2 through fullerene modification

        Carbon nanomaterials are prominent building blocks in the synthetic van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with desired properties. Scientific understanding of their interfacial interactions is the premise to design this kind of vdW heterostructures with optimal performance.We here study the mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity of SnO2 by fullerene modification at electronic level, to explore the interfacial interaction and its correlation with photocatalytic activity. The results show that the interfacial interaction increases with the number of C atom of fullerene, and leads to some of C atoms be positively/ negatively charged, making the fullerene a highly active co-catalyst in heterostructures. Compared to pristine SnO2, the band gap of the heterostructures is much smaller, leading to their absorption wavelength extending the entire visible region. Interestingly, a staggered type-II band alignment in the C20 (C60)/SnO2 (101) heterostructures results into the robust separation of photoexcited charge carriers between the two constituents, indicating that the fullerene is an effective sensitizer, and thus enhanced photocatalytic activity. These findings can rationalize the available experiment and will be of broad interest in developing the highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts via fullerene modification.

      • Association between a p73 Gene Polymorphism and Genetic Susceptibility to Non-small Cell Lung Cancer in the South of China

        Background: This study aimed to identify any association between the p73 gene G4C14-to-A4T14 polymorphism and risk of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the south of China. Materials and Methods: We genotyped the p73 gene polymorphism of peripheral blood DNA from 168 patients with NSCLC and 195 normal controls using HRM (high resolution melting) and PCR-CTPP (polymerase chain reaction with confronting two-pair primers). Results: The results of genotyping by HRM and PCR-CTPP were consistent with direct sequencing, the p73 genotype distribution in 168 lung cancer patients being as follows: GC/GC 101 cases (60.1%), GC/AT 59 cases (35.1%), AT/AT 8 cases (4.8%). The carriers of AT/AT genotype had a significantly reduced risk of NSCLC (OR=0.370; 95%CI: 0.170-0.806; p=0.010) as compared with non-carriers. However, we found no relations between p73 genotypes and histological type (p=0.798, $x^2=0.452$), tumor stage (p=0.806, $x^2=0.806$), or lymph node metastasis (p=0.578, $x^2=1.098$). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the p73 G4C14-to-A4T14 polymorphism may be a modifier of NSCLC susceptibility in the Chinese population.

      • Expression and Clinical Significance of Sushi Domain-Containing Protein 3 (SUSD3) and Insulin-like Growth Factor-I Receptor (IGF-IR) in Breast Cancer

        Background: To investigate the expression of insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR) and sushi domain containing protein 3 (SUSD3) in breast cancer tissue, and analyze their relationship with clinical parameters and the correlation between the two proteins. Materials and Methods: The expression of IGF-IR and SUSD3 in 100 cases of breast cancer tissues and adjacent normal breast tissues after surgery was detected by immunohistochemical technique MaxVisionTM, and the relationship with clinical pathological features was further analyzed. Results: The positive rate of IGF-IR protein was 86.0% in breast cancer, higher than 3.0% in adjacent normal breast tissue (P<0.05). The positive expression rate of SUSD3 protein was 78.0% in breast cancer, higher than 2.0% in adjacent normal breast tissue (P<0.05). The expression of IGF-IR and SUSD3 was related to estrogen receptor and pathological types (P<0.05),but not with age, stage, the expression of HER-2 and Ki-67 (P>0. 05). The expression of IGF-IR and SUSD3 in breast cancer tissue was positively related (r=0.553, P<0.01). Conclusions: The expression of IGF-IR and SUSD3 may be correlated to the occurrence and development of breast cancer. The combined detection of IGF-IR, SUSD3 and ER may play an important role in judging prognosis and guiding adjuvant therapy after surgery of breast cancer.

        Multi-stage magmatic plumbing system of the volcano: A case study from Ulleung Island, South Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The multi-stage magmatic plumbing system beneath the Ulleung, Dokdo, and Oki-Dogo Island has attracted considerable attention but has seldom been investigated in detail. Herein, we present a comprehensive geochemical analysis of volcanic rocks sampled at the Ulleung Island, including whole–rock major and trace elements as well as Sr and Nd isotopic compositions. Late Cenozoic alkaline volcanic rocks from the Ulleung Island are commonly divided into basaltic rocks (tephrite basanite and basalt) and acidic rocks (trachyte and rhyolite) based on the large petrologic and geochemical variations. All rocks are significantly enriched in light rare-earth elements (REEs) and large-ion lithophile elements and relatively depleted in heavy REEs. The acidic rocks have slightly enriched <SUP>87</SUP>Sr/<SUP>86</SUP>Sr and ε<SUB>Nd</SUB> ratios (0.704895–0.705173; −2.48 to −1.91) and distinctly negative Ba, Sr, P, Eu, and Ti anomalies relative to the basaltic rocks (0.704733–0.705006, -2.61– -1.17). A multi-stage magma evolution model was finally developed beneath the Ulleung, Dokdo, and Oki-Dogo Island, characterized by at least two magma reservoirs at different depths approximately ranging between 20 and 100 km. These ascending magmas were retained in a shallower reservoir for ~1.0, ~0.5, and ~4.5 Ma, respectively, prior to eruptions with significant crystal fractionation. Mantle-derived basaltic melts either directly travelled to the surface to erupt as tephrite-basanite and basalt, or were stagnated in shallower reservoirs where they differentiated into acidic magma to erupt as trachyte and rhyolite. The Late Cenozoic Korean Peninsula basalts are mainly divided into two groups, i.e., the depleted mantle (DM) and enriched mantle 1 (EM1) mixing trend beneath the Ulleung and Dokdo Island, and the DM-EM2 mixing connection beneath the Jeju Island, which likely indicates the traversed boundary beneath Korean Peninsula that represents a simple lateral continuation of the boundary between the southeast and northeast China Blocks.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We present new geochemistry and Sr-Nd isotopes for Cenozoic volcanic rocks from Ulleung Island. </LI> <LI> Ulleung Island was formed by multi-stage magma evolving model with two magma reservoirs at different depths. </LI> <LI> The Ulleung magma was retained in shallower reservoir for ~1.0 Ma prior to eruption with significant crystal fractionation. </LI> <LI> Mantle-derived basaltic melts were stagnated in shallower reservoir where they differentiated into acidic magma. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        시간매개형 프랙탈로서 줄리아 집합의 생성패턴 및 형태에 관한 연구

        본 연구는 Microsoft Visual C ++프로그램을 이용해서 시간매개형 알고리즘(Escape-time algorithm)으로 줄리아 집합을 생성하여 통제변수(Control parameters)인 ‘탈출시간 K ’, ‘탈출반경 M’, ‘복상수 C’가 줄리아 집합의 생성패턴에 대한 영향을 분석하는 동시에 줄리아 집합의 형태 특성을 탐구한다. 복잡한 현상과 간단한 규칙 사이에 과학과 예술의 교량 역할을 하는 디지털 디자인이 시각예술 분야에 응용과 실현을 촉진하는 동시에 디자인의 폭을 넓히고자 한다. 본고의 연구 방법은 문헌연구 및 실험연구를 진행하였다. 2장에서는 ‘시간’의 개념을 고찰하여, 예술에서 ‘시간’의 의미를 살펴본다. 이를 토대로 디지털 시대에서 ‘시간’의 역할과 중요성을 해석한다. 3장은 본론의 전개를 위한 것으로서, 프랙탈의 개념 및 분류를 규명하고, 줄리아 집합의 정의 및 통제변수를 고찰한다. 4장에서는 시간매개형 프랙탈로서 줄리아 집합의 생성패턴과 통제변수의 수치적 상관성을 알아보기 위해 시간매개형 알고리즘을 분명히 파악하며, Microsoft Visual C ++프로그램을 이용하여 ‘탈출시간 K’, ‘탈출반경 M’, ‘복상수 C’가 줄리아 집합의 생성패턴에 미치는 영향을 실험 분석한다. 5장에서는 줄리아 집합의 형태적 특성을 밝히고자 한다. 본고의 연구 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 시간매개형 알고리즘으로 생성된 줄리아 집합과 통제변수인 ‘탈출시간 K’, ‘탈출반경 M’, ‘복상수 C’의 수치와 밀접한 관계가 있어서, 통제변수의 변화에 따라 줄리아 집합의 생성패턴도 변화한다. 둘째, 시간매개형 알고리즘으로 생성된 줄리아 집합은 자기유사성, 대칭성, 내포성, 무작위성의 형태적 특성이 드러낸다. In this paper, the Microsoft Visual C ++ software was used to generate the Julia Set with the Escape time algorithm to analyze the influence of the control parameters Escape-time k, Escape radius mand Complex constant c on the morphology of the Julia Set, and to discuss its morphological characteristics. And this paper intended to build a scientific and artistic connection between complex phenomena and simple rules, so as to promote the application and practice of the concept of digital design in the field of art design and guide the development of design thinking. The research methods of this paper are based on literature research method and experimental research method. The second chapter examined the concept of time and identified the expression form of time in art, and then analyzed the role and importance of time in the digital age. The third chapter introduced and expressed the concept of fractal and its classification, and to examine the definition of the Julia Set, so as to lay a foundation for the detailed description in the following context. The chapter 4 elaborated the generation mode of the Julia Set and the numerical correlation between it and the control parameters, so as to clearly grasp the escape time algorithm, and to use the Microsoft Visual C ++ software to perform an experimental analysis on the influence of the control parameters Escape-time K, Escape radius M and Complex constant C on the morphology of the Julia Set. The fifth chapter elaborated the morphological characteristics of the Julia Set. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows: Firstly, the Julia Set generated by the Escape-time algorithm is closely related to the Escape-time K, Escape radius M and the Complex constant C, and the change of each parameter will change the morphology of the Julia Set. Secondly, Julia Set generated by escape time algorithm has self-similarity, symmetry, nestedness, randomness and other morphological characteristics.

        증강현실(AR)기술이 적용된 스마트 패키지디자인 사례 및 요소 분석

        패키지에 대한 증강현실(AR)기술의 적용은 전통적인 패키지에 새로운 상호작용 모델 및 의미를 제공한다. 증강현실은 정보 집합, 정보지능화에 착안하여 전통적인 패키지의 한계를 뛰어넘는 데 도움이 되고 패키지의 개성화, 욕구충족, 상호작용이 이루어지는 가상공간의 향상으로 정적이고 단일한 시각의 패키지 정보를 동적이고 다양한 감각이 융합된 메시지 전달방식으로 변화시키고 있다. 이에 본 연구의 범위로 이론적 배경에서 스마트 패키지 디자인의 개념 및 요소를 알아보고 상위개념으로써 지능형 패키지의 개요를 파악한 후 종속 변수로서 증강현실의 개념 및 특징과 기술을 파악하게 된다. 이를 토대로 증강현실기술을 적용한 스마트 패키지 디자인의 사례를 분석하고 스마트 패키지 디자인 요소로서 시각적 요소, 청각적 요소, 감성적 요소로 세분화하여 이를 분석하였다. 연구의 방법은 국내외 문헌 참고와 온오프라인의 사례분석을 외삽법적 추계의 방식으로 연역적으로 열거하고 이를 귀납적 접근으로 결론을 유추해 낸다. 연구결과, 소비자의 상품에 대한 이해도와 기억도 향상, 패키지와 소비의 시너지를 높이는 상호작용성의 다양화, 지능화, 오락화 그리고 감성화를 크게 증가시켜 패키지의 기능을 한층 더 확장시켜 나갈 수 있는 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 곧 증강현실기술을 통해 스마트 패키지 정보를 보다 직관적이면서 생동감 있고 정확하게 이해하는 데 편리하다는 장점을 인식하는 과정이 될 것이다. The application of AR technology to packages brings new interaction models and meanings to traditional packages. Augmented Reality helps to overcome the limitations of traditional packages by focusing on information collection and information intelligence, and improves the virtual space through which individualization of packages, needs, and interactions are used. This converged message delivery method is changing. In this context, the concept and elements of smart package design are analyzed from the theoretical background and the overview of the intelligent package as a higher concept, and then the concept, features and technology of augmented reality as dependent variables. Based on this, we analyzed the case of smart package design applying augmented reality technology and analyzed it by subdividing it into visual element, auditory element and emotional element as smart package design element. The method of deduction enumerates domestic and foreign literature references and on-offline case analysis in the form of extrapolation estimation, and infers the conclusion by inductive approach. As the result, the findings confirm the possibility of further expanding the functionality of the package by greatly improving the understanding and memory of consumers’ products, diversifying the interactivity, intelligence, entertainment, and emotion that increase the synergy between package and consumption. This will be a process of recognizing the advantages of smart package information more intuitive, lively and accurate through augmented reality technology.

      • Melatonin Enhances the Developmental Competence of Porcine Embryos derived from Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer by Preventing DNA Damage Induced by Oxidative Stress

        Melatonin has antioxidant and scavenger effects in the cellular antioxidant system. It acts by protecting cells from oxidative injury via superoxide-free radicals and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Recent studies have shown that treatment with melatonin improves somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryo development and increases the success of somatic cell reprogramming. However, the mechanisms for this remain unclear. This research investigated the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of action for melatonin in porcine SCNT embryos under oxidative stress. The results suggested that the developmental competence of porcine SCNT embryos was significantly enhanced after melatonin treatment. In addition, melatonin attenuated the H2O2-induced increase in reactive oxygen species levels, decrease in glutathione levels, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Importantly, melatonin also inhibited phospho-histone γH2A.X expression and comet tail formation, suggesting that it prevents H2O2-induced DNA damage. Meanwhile, the expression of genes involved in homologous recombination (MRE11a, BRAC1, and RAD51) and non-homologous end-joining (PRKDC, XRCC6, and TP53BP1) pathways for the repair of double-stranded breaks was reduced upon melatonin treatment in porcine SCNT embryos on day 5 of development under H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Taken together, these results indicated that melatonin promotes porcine SCNT embryo development by preventing oxidative stress-induced DNA damage via quenching of free radical formation. Our results reveal a previously unrecognized regulatory effect of melatonin in response to oxidative stress and DNA damage. This provides a novel mechanism for the improvements in SCNT embryo development that were reported to be associated with exposure to this hormone.

      • Research on the Real-time Monitoring System of Cow’s Rumination

        Cow’s rumination is an important process of food digestion for dairy cows which is a valuable indicator during the cow management. By measuring the cow’s rumination time, it is capable to predict the cow’s estrus, and learn the cow’s health situation. This paper uses MSP430F149 processor with a sound sensor to achieve the design of real-time monitoring system for cow’s rumination. Since the system require high accuracy of the audio signal of the cow’s rumination, the ADC acquisition module and filtering and amplification process was made a special design. For the change of the spectral characteristics of the voice when cows ruminating, this paper designed the endpoint detection algorithm and sound sequence windowed function, and FFT transform is performed on the data in the Hamming window, and then do the frequency domain analysis to the audio of cow’s rumination. Comparing the sound spectrum collected from high precision recording instrument and this system, this system has done a good job in frequency and time domain. Applying the high precision recording instrument to the simulation experiment for cow’s rumination which conduct 50 sets of different time ranging, using this system to do the real-time monitoring, the mean error was 4.38, the R2 value is 0.877, the Pearson correlation was 0.936. This system performed accurate in the acquisition of the sound signal, and more accurately in identifying cows ruminating, and it can also provide effective means for the intelligent management of the pasture on cow’s health and breeding.

        Solvothermal Synthesis of InOOH Nanospheres with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

        Monodispersive indium oxyhydroxide (InOOH) nanospheres were successfully synthesized by an acetic acid-assisted solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of InOOH nanospheres were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The obtained InOOH nanospheres have a porous structure with diameters of 400–650 nm and a relative large specific surface area of 60.63 m2/g. Introducing a trace amount of acetic acid into the reaction system can effectively adjust the reaction rate, realizing the morphology and phase tuning of InOOH nanospheres. The InOOH nanospheres exhibit excellent photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under UV light irradiation, which is ascribed to the porous structures and high-Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of InOOH nanospheres.
