        Does Bank Transparency and Disclosure with ESG and Financial Distress Impact Its Valuation? Perspectives from Indian Banks

        The primary objective of the current study is to ascertain the effect of transparency and disclosure (T&D) on the value of banks operating in the Indian banking sector. It also includes finding the moderating impact of financial distress (FD) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) on the association between T&D and the valuation of banks. The study employs Panel data analysis (PDA) to analyze data and produce novel results thereafter. The authors of the study have considered using data of secondary nature which is sourced from banks operating in the Indian banking industry. Data in the current study has been considered for ten financial years, i.e., 2010 to 2019. The results reveal that T&D positively impacts a firm’s valuation. We have also found evidence that financial distress and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) significantly impact the value of firms under the influence of T&D. As far as we are aware, no study of this kind has been done yet in any developing nation to determine the effect that T&D, FD, and ESG have on the value of Indian banks. This paper can help future researchers in their respective studies that will involve the study variables (FD, T&D, and ESG).

        Effects of smoking and marination on the sensory characteristics of cold-cut chicken breast filets: A pilot study

        This study aimed to determine individual and combined effects of smoking and marination on the sensory characteristics of boneless, skinless chicken breast meat. Four types of cooked, cold-cut chicken breast meat, i.e., marinated cooked, marinated smoked, and controls of non-marinated cooked and non-marinated smoked chicken, were evaluated for 28 sensory characteristics. Marination significantly increased saltiness, sweetness, roasted flavor, smoked flavor, and moistness of the cold-cut chicken breast meat. In addition, smoking significantly enhanced the saltiness, bitterness, roasted flavor, smoked flavor, and moistness of mass. Interestingly, a combination of smoking and marination processes resulted in a synergistic increase in the perceived moistness of mass compared to their individual treatments. In conclusion, this study demonstrates individual and combined influences of smoking and marination on the sensory characteristics of cold-cut chicken breast meat.

      • Induction of Apoptosis by Methanolic Extract of Rubia Cordifolia Linn in HEp-2 Cell Line is Mediated by Reactive Oxygen Species

        Rubia cordifolia Linn, which belongs to the Rubiaceae family, is a well-known herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. In the present study, we investigated the influence of a methanolic extract (RC) on the induction of apoptosis in HEp-2 (human laryngeal carcinoma) cell line, as evidenced by cytotoxicity, morphological changes and modification in the levels of pro-oxidants. Inhibition of cell proliferation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release increased in a time and dose-dependent manner. Further, reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione transferase (GST) and protein levels decreased and lipid peroxidation increased significantly on RC treatment in a dose dependent manner when compared to controls. Based on the results we determined the optimal dose as 30mg/ ml and the apoptotic effect of RC extract (30 mg/ml) on HEp-2 cells was confirmed by fluorescent microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) based on morphological and ultrastructural changes. RC extract suppressed the proliferation of HEp-2 oral cancer cells inducing apoptotic cell death in vitro. These results point to potential of RC extract as an agent for the treatment of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

        구리 회수를 위한 식물뿌리 기반 친환경 바이오 흡착제의 적용 – 합성수지와의 비교

        Copper is one of the non-ferrous metals used in the electrical/electronic manufacturing industries due to its superior properties particularly the high conductivity and less resistivity. The effluent generated from the surface finishing process of these industries contains higher copper content which gets discharged in to water bodies directly or indirectly. This causes severe environmental pollution and also results in loss of an important valuable metal. To overcome this issue, continuous R & D activities are going on across the globe in adsorption area with the purpose of finding an efficient, low cost and ecofriendly adsorbent. In view of the above, present investigation was made to compare the performance of a plant root (Datura root powder) as a bio-adsorbent to that of the synthetic one (Tulsion T-42) for copper adsorption from such effluent. Experiments were carried out in batch studies to optimize parameters such as adsorbent dose, contact time, pH, feed concentration, etc. Results of the batch experiments indicate that 0.2 g of Datura root powder and 0.1 g of Tulsion T-42 showed 95% copper adsorption from an initial feed/solution of 100 ppm Cu at pH 4 in contact time of 15 and 30 min, respectively. Adsorption data for both the adsorbents were fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm. Experimental results were also validated with the kinetic model, which showed that the adsorption of copper followed pseudo-second order rate expression for the both adsorbents. Overall result demonstrates that the bio-adsorbent tested has a potential applicability for metal recovery from the waste solutions/effluents of metal finishing units. In view of the requirements of commercial viability and minimal environmental damage there from, Datura root powder being an effective material for metal uptake, may prove to be a feasible adsorbent for copper recovery after the necessary scale-up studies. 구리는 우수한 특성, 특히 높은 전도성과 낮은 저항으로 인해 전기/전자 제조 산업에 널리 사용되는 비철금속 중 하나이다. 이러한 산업의 표면 처리 공정에서는 구리 함량이 높은 폐수가 발생하며, 직간접적으로 수계로 배출된다. 이는 심각한 환경 오염을 일으키고 또한귀중한 유용금속의 손실을 초래한다. 이러한 문제를 극복하기 위하여, 효율적이고 저렴하며 친환경적인 흡착제를 찾기 위한 목적으로 흡착 분야에서 전 세계적으로 지속적인 연구개발이 진행되고 있다. 이러한 점을 고려하여, 본 연구에서는 위와 같은 폐수로부터 구리 흡착을 위한 바이오 흡착제로서 식물뿌리(Datura 뿌리 분말)의 성능을 합성 흡착제(Tulsion T-42)와 비교하였다. 실험은 흡착제 투여량, 접촉시간, pH, 주입액 농도 등의 변수들을 최적화하기 위하여 회분식으로 수행되었다. 초기구리농도가 100 ppm이고 pH가 4인 주입액에서, 0.2 g Datura 뿌리 분말을 15분간 접촉하였을 때 구리 흡착율은 95%이었으며, 0.1 g Tulsion T-42은 30분간 접촉에서 95%의 흡착율을 나타내었다. 두 흡착제의 흡착 데이터는 Freundlich 등온선과 잘 일치하였으며, 유사 2차 속도식을 따르는 것을 나타내었다. 전체 결과는 본연구의 바이오 흡착제가 표면처리 공정의 폐액 또는 폐수로부터 금속 회수에 적용될 가능성을 보여주고 있다.

        Do HbA1C Levels Correlate With Delayed Gastric Emptying in Diabetic Patients?

        Background/Aims Gastroparesis is characterized by delayed gastric emptying without obstruction. Diabetes is frequently associated with poor glycemic control and delayed gastric emptying. Gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES) is the standard for measuring gastric emptying. Serum hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) measures prolonged glycemic control with normal as <7% glycated. To date, no correlation of serum HbA1C level with gastric emptying, demonstrated by GES, in diabetics has been performed. The aim of the present investigation is to determine if a relationship exists between serum HbA1C levels and gastric emptying, assessed by GES, in diabetics. Methods All diabetics, having both GES and serum HbA1C level within 3 months from July 1, 2003-June 30, 2008 were eligible for study. Demographic data collected included gender, age and ethnicity. Abnormal gastric emptying was defined as T½>120 minutes and serum HbA1C as percent glycated. Results Nuclear Medicine GES database review revealed 431 examinations performed during the study interval. A total of 181 were not eligible due to the following: 29 duplicates, 22 diabetes not documented and 130 without HbA1C levels, resulting a study group of 250 cases. No significant correlation was observed between gastric emptying time, HbA1C or age. Among patients with HbA1C ≥7%, HbA1C was inversely related to age with a coefficient of correlation of r=-0.175 (p=0.038). Conclusions There is no correlation observed between gastric emptying time, using GES, and serum HbA1C levels. In diabetics, serum HbA1C is not as important as daily glycemic control regarding gastric emptying. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2010;16:414-417)

        Home exercise program adherence strategies in vestibular rehabilitation: a systematic review

        Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to investigate for effective strategies to improve home exercise program (HEP) adherence in vestibular rehabilitation (VR). Design: Systematic review. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to identify effective strategies used to improve HEP adherence of patients in VR. Six databases, Academic Search Premier, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PUBMED, PsycINFO, and Web of Science were searched from their inception to December 31, 2015. The keywords used for search were `home program`, `home intervention`, `compliance`, `adherence`, `vestibular rehabilitation`, `motion sickness`, and `motion sensitivity`. Results: A total of eight studies were selected to be included in the review. There was 95.2% agreement between the two reviewers who reviewed the studies using a quality assessment tool. The overall inter-rater agreement (κ=0.73) showed good agreement between the reviewers. Strong evidence was identified for 3 major categories of effective HEP adherence strategies, 1) providing patient with written summary of HEP; 2) asking patient to maintain a record of HEP and symptoms; and 3) providing tele-rehabilitation in form of email and/or telephone support along with in person treatment sessions. Also, based on strong evidence, computerized technology was not found to be superior to other strategies for improving patients` HEP adherence in VR. Conclusions: The effective strategies for improving HEP in VR include written summary of exercise, maintenance of log of HEP and symptoms and tele-rehabilitation along with in person treatment sessions.

        Evaluation of calcium sulphate barrier to collagen membrane in intrabony defects

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to clinically and radiographically evaluate and compare treatment of intrabony defects with the use of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft in combination with a calcium sulphate barrier to collagen membrane. Methods: Twelve patients having chronic periodontal disease aged 20 to 50 years and with a probing depth >6 mm were selected. Classification of patient defects into experimental and control groups was made randomly. In the test group, a calcium sulphate barrier membrane, and in control group, a collagen membrane, was used in conjunction with decalcified freezedried bone graft in both sides. Ancillary parameters as well as soft tissue parameters along with radiographs were taken at baseline and after 6 months of surgery. Parameters assessed were plaque index, modified gingival index, probing depth, relative attachment level, and location of the gingival margin. A Student’s t-test was done for intragroup and a paired t-test for intergroup analysis. Results: Intragroup analysis revealed statistically significant improvement in all the ancillary parameters and soft tissue parameters with no statistically significant difference in intergroup analysis. Conclusions: The study concluded that a calcium sulphate barrier was comparable to collagen membrane in achieving clinical benefits and hence it can be used as an economical alternative to collagen membrane.

      • Query Recommendation Based on User Browsing History

        The most commercial search engines return the search list by matching the user query terms with the documents available in its database. The relative effectiveness of search list is highly affected by the extent to which the query keywords map to the actual need of user. User generally forms the short, ambiguous and instant queries which lead to inclusion of irrelevant documents in the search list. One well known solution to this problem is query suggestion also known as query recommendation. For query recommendations, the search systems maintain the query logs at server sites to better understand user’s information need. But till now, the current search systems have partially solved this problem as they roughly offer the similar queries to all the users regardless of their actual interests. In this paper, A novel query recommendation technique based on user browsing patterns is proposed where user interest factor in different domains are computed and used to recommend personalised queries to each individual. The experimental evaluation shows that system is able to assist user in query formation phase and efficiently reduces the search space and time required to get the desired information.

      • Adipocyte-Derived FABP4 Regulates of Cancer Stemness and Drug Resistance in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest cancers in the world. Increasing reports showed significant correlation between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and HCC development. Given cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a critical role in regulating the tumor relapse and therapeutic resistance, we hypothesize that adipocytes, one of the key cellular factors within the tumor microenvironment, may play a critical role in HCC pathogenesis via regulation of liver CSCs. Methods: We have employed a co-culture system to dissect the potential cross-talk between fully differentiated adipocytes and HCC cells. The conditioned medium (CM) of adipocytes was collected to examine the potential paracrine effect of adipocytes in regulating liver CSCs. The secretome of adipocytes was analyzed by using Orbitrap Liquid Chromatography-Mass spectrometry. Molecular pathway mediating the phenotypic alterations was identified through RNA sequencing analysis and functional rescue experiments. Results: Using co-culture system, we found that adipocytes enhanced the self-renewal and tumorigenicity of HCC cells through paracrine secretion. Consistently, conditioned medium of adipocytes showed enhanced tumorigenicity, self-renewal, invasiveness and resistance to doxorubicin and sorafenib treatment. By Orbitrap Liquid Chromatography-Mass spectrometry, we identified 209 proteins, among which we have focused on FABP4 as it is preferentially secreted from adipocytes. Consistently, recombinant FABP4 enhanced CSC properties of HCC cells; while FABP4 inhibitor (BMS309403) abolished the CSC enhancing effect of CM of adipocytes. Clinically, FABP4 overexpression was significantly correlated with poorer patients survival. Conclusions: We demonstrated the pivotal role of adipocytes on regulation of liver CSCs through paracrine secretion. Adipocyte-derived FABP4 signaling cascade may be a novel therapeutic target for treatment of NAFLD induced HCC.

        Apoptosis: role in myeloid cell development

        Hematopoiesis is the process that generates blood cells in an organism from the pluripotent stem cells. Hematopoietic stem cells are characterized by their ability to undergo self-renewal and differentiation. The self-renewing ability ensures that these pluripotent cells are not depleted from the bone marrow niche. A proper balance between cell death and cell survival is necessary to maintain a homeostatic condition, hence, apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is an essential step in hematopoiesis. Recent studies, however, have introduced a new aspect to this process, citing the significance of the apoptosis mediator, caspase, in cell development and differentiation. Extensive research has been carried out to study the possible role of caspases and other apoptosis related factors in the developmental processes. This review focuses on the various apoptotic factors involved in the development and differentiation of myeloid lineage cells: erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, and macrophages.
