Low Resistance and Transparent Ag/AZO Ohmic Contact to p-GaN

        T. Han,T. Wang,X. W. Gan,H. Wu,Y. Shi,C. Liu 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.65 No.1

Silver (Ag)/ aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) films were deposited on p-GaN by using electronbeamevaporation. After the annealing process, current -voltage (I-V) measurements were carriedout to determine the characteristic of the contacts. The Ag/AZO films annealed at 600 C werefound to present an ohmic contact behavior. The specific contact resistance was calculated tobe 9.76 × 10−4cm2 and the transmittance was over 80% for visibly light. The atomic forcemicroscope was used to measure the aggregation of Ag grains which may have been the main factorin the formation of the Ag/AZO ohmic contact to p-GaN.

Strength of Double Skin Steel-Concrete Composite Walls

        Ying Qin,Gan-Ping Shu,Shenggang Fan,JinYu Lu,Shi Cao,Jian-Hong Han 한국강구조학회 2017 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.17 No.2

Double skin steel-concrete composite walls have been increasingly used in civil engineering applications. However, the advantages of these walls have not been fully recognized due to the lack of appropriate technical guidelines for capacity design. In this paper, the local buckling strength of steel plate were firstly reviewed in terms of specifications incorporated in several modern codes. A methodology to predict the strength of steel plate with restraint of both concrete and shear studs was proposed based on the explicit solution for local buckling of steel plate in composite shear walls subjected to uniform axial compression and with elastically rotational restraint at loaded and unloaded edges. The results were compared with various previous experimental data and good agreement was observed. Furthermore, the load carrying capacity of composite walls was derived from the superposition of the contribution of steel plate and concrete. The predicted values from the proposed equations, together with the resulted determined from modern codes, were compared with the experimental results. It was found that both the proposed method and JEAG 4618 offer reasonable predictions while AISC 360 and KEPIC-SNG always underestimate the actual values.

      • Induction of Apoptosis in Glioma Cells and Upregulation of Fas Expression Using the Human Interferon-β Gene

        Guo, Yan,Wang, Gan,Gao, Wen-Wei,Cheng, Shi-Wen,Wang, Ren,Ju, Shi-Ming,Cao, He-Li,Tian, Heng-Li Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.6

We investigated whether IFN-${\beta}$ inhibits the growth of human malignant glioma and induces glioma cell apoptosis using the human IFN-${\beta}$ gene transfected into glioma cells. A eukaryonic expression vector ($pSV2IFN{\beta}$) for IFN-${\beta}$ was transfected into the glioma cell line SHG44 using liposome transfection. Stable transfection and IFN-${\beta}$ expression were confirmed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Cell apoptosis was also assessed by Hoechst staining and electron microscopy. In vivo experiments were used to establish a SHG44 glioma model in nude mice. Liposomes containing the human IFN-${\beta}$ gene were injected into the SHG44 glioma of nude mice to observe glioma growth and calculate tumor size. Fas expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. The IFN-${\beta}$ gene was successfully transfected and expressed in the SHG44 glioma cells in vitro. A significant difference in the number of apoptotic cells was observed between transfected and non-transfected cells. Glioma growth in nude mice was inhibited in vivo, with significant induction of apoptosis. Fas expression was also elevated. The IFN-${\beta}$ gene induces apoptosis in glioma cells, possibly through upregulation of Fas. The IFN-${\beta}$ gene modulation in the Fas pathway and apoptosis in glioma cells may be important for the treatment of gliomas.

Exoproduction and Biochemical Characterization of a Novel Serine Protease from Ornithinibacillus caprae L9T with Hide-Dehairing Activity

( Xiaoguang Li ),( Qian Zhang ),( Longzhan Gan ),( Guangyang Jiang ),( Yongqiang Tian ),( Bi Shi ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2022 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.32 No.1

This study is the first report on production and characterization of the enzyme from an Ornithinibacillus species. A 4.2-fold increase in the extracellular protease (called L9T) production from Ornithinibacillus caprae L9T was achieved through the one-factor-at-a-time approach and response surface methodological optimization. L9T protease exhibited a unique protein band with a mass of 25.9 kDa upon sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This novel protease was active over a range of pH (4-13), temperatures (30-80℃) and salt concentrations (0-220 g/l), with the maximal activity observed at pH 7, 70℃ and 20 g/l NaCl. Proteolytic activity was upgraded in the presence of Ag+, Ca2+ and Sr2+, but was totally suppressed by 5 mM phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride, which suggests that this enzyme belongs to the serine protease family. L9T protease was resistant to certain common organic solvents and surfactants; particularly, 5 mM Tween 20 and Tween 80 improved the activity by 63 and 15%, respectively. More importantly, L9T protease was found to be effective in dehairing of goatskins, cowhides and rabbit-skins without damaging the collagen fibers. These properties confirm the feasibility of L9T protease in industrial applications, especially in leather processing.

Evolutionary and functional implications of 3′ untranslated region length of mRNAs by comprehensive investigation among four taxonomically diverse metazoan species

        Wei Wang,Dong‑hui Fang,Jia Gan,Yi Shi,Hui Tang,Huai Wang,Mao‑zhong Fu,Jun Yi 한국유전학회 2019 Genes & Genomics Vol.41 No.7

Background In eukaryotic organisms, it has been well acknowledged that 3′ untranslated regions (3′ UTRs) of mRNA are actively involved in post-transcriptional regulations of gene expression. Although both shortening and lengthening of 3′ UTRs of specific candidate genes were explicitly documented to have functional consequences, landscape of 3′ UTR lengths in relation to evolutionary dynamics and biological meanings remains to be elucidated when large-scale data become available. Objectives The primary objective of this study was to revealed different inter- and intra-species patterns on length distribution of 3′ UTRs in comparison with 5′ UTRs and coding regions. Methods In the present study, we investigated 3′ UTR lengths in a highly curated set of 57,135 mRNA sequences among four well-studied and taxonomically diverse metazoan species (fruit fly, zebrafish, mouse and human). Results The average length ratio of 3′–5′ UTRs considerably increased from fruit fly (twofold) to human (fivefold). Moreover, genes can be characterized by the obviously different patterns of evolutionary change on 3′ UTR lengths. By utilizing the Gene Ontology annotations, genes with differential lengths of 3′ UTRs were suggested to have the divergent functional implications. In human, we further revealed that ubiquitously transcribed genes had higher median lengths of 3′ UTRs than the genes of tissue-restricted expressions. Conclusion We conducted a comprehensive analysis and provided an overview regarding 3′ UTRs biology of mRNAs in animals, whereas the mechanistic explanations of 3′ UTRs length variation in correlation to regulation of gene expression still remain to be further studied.

Genetic structure of six cattle populations revealed by transcriptomewide SNPs and gene expression

        Wei Wang,Huai Wang,Hui Tang,Jia Gan,Changgeng Shi,Qing Lu,Donghui Fang,Jun Yi,Maozhong Fu 한국유전학회 2018 Genes & Genomics Vol.40 No.7

There are abundant cattle breeds/populations in China, and the systematic discovery of genomic variants is essential for performing the marker assisted selection and conservation of genetic resources. In the present study, we employed whole transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology for revealing genetic structure among six Chinese cattle populations according to transcriptome-wide SNPs and gene expression. A total of 68,094 variants consisting of 61,754 SNPs and 6340 InDels were detected and widely distributed among all chromosomes, by which the clear patterns of population structures were revealed. We also found the significantly differential density of variant distribution among genes. Additionally, we totally assembled 15,992 genes and detected obvious differences on the expression profiles among populations. In contrast to genomic variants, the measure of gene expression levels failed to support the expected population structure. Here, we provided a global landscape on the differential expression genes among these cattle populations.

      • Discovery of a Very Large (≈20 kpc) Galaxy at <i>z</i> = 3.72

        Lee, Kyoung-Soo,Dey, Arjun,Matheson, Thomas,Shi, Ke,Hung, Chao-Ling,Xue, Rui,Inami, Hanae,Huang, Yun,Lee, Khee-Gan,Ashby, Matthew L. N.,Jannuzi, Buell,Reddy, Naveen,Hong, Sungryong,Mo, Wenli,Malavasi, American Astronomical Society 2018 The Astrophysical journal Vol.862 No.1

<P>We report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of a very large star-forming galaxy, G6025, at z(spec) = 3.721 +/- 0.003. In the rest frame approximate to 2100 angstrom, G6025 subtends approximate to 24 kpc in physical extent when measured from the 1.5 sigma isophote, in agreement with the parametric size measurements that yield a half-light radius of 4.9 +/- 0.5 kpc and a semimajor axis of 12.5 +/- 0.1 kpc. It is also very UV-luminous (approximate to 5L(UV,z similar to 4)*) and young (approximate to 140 +/- 60 Myr). Despite its unusual size and luminosity, the stellar population parameters and dust reddening (M-star similar to M-z similar to 4*( )and E(B - V) similar to 0.18 +/- 0.05) estimated from the integrated light are similar to those of smaller galaxies at comparable redshifts. The ground-based morphology and spectroscopy show two dominant components, both located off-center, embedded in more diffuse emission. We speculate that G6025 may be a scaled-up version of chain galaxies seen in deep HST imaging or, alternatively, a nearly equal-mass merger involving two super-L* galaxies in its early stage. It lies close to but not within a known massive protocluster at z = 3.78. We find four companions within 6 Mpc from G6025, two of which lie within 1.6 Mpc. While the limited sensitivity of the existing spectroscopy does not allow us to robustly characterize the local environment of G6025, it likely resides in a locally overdense environment. The luminosity, size, and youth of G6025 make it uniquely suited to study the early formation of massive galaxies in the universe.</P>

Solvothermal Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide/Ferroferric Oxide Hybrid Composites with Enhanced Microwave Absorption Properties

        Ruiwen Shu,Meng Wang,Yingying Yang,Siyu Chang,Gengyuan Zhang,Ying Gan,Jianjun Shi,Jie He 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2017 NANO Vol.12 No.12

In this work, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/ferroferric oxide (RGO/Fe3O4) hybrid composite was successfully fabricated by a facile one-step solvothermal method. The structure, chemical composition, morphology and magnetic properties of the samples were investigated in detail. Fe3O4 microspheres with an average diameter of 250 nm were uniformly anchored on the surface of the RGO sheets without large aggregation. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the hybrid composite exhibited obviously enhanced microwave absorption properties compared with the pure Fe3O4 microspheres. The minimum reflection loss (RL) of the hybrid composite reached -36.8 dB at 17.2 GHz with a thickness of 5.0mm and its effective absorption bandwidth (lower than - 10 dB) was 3.9 GHz with a thickness of 2.5 mm. Significantly, the hybrid composite exhibited a dual-waveband absorption characteristic covering the C and Ku bands. Besides, the relationship between the matching thickness and peak frequency was reasonably explained according to the quarter-wavelength matching theory. Therefore, the obtained composite was a promising candidate for application in microwave absorption.
