        A High-Current RFQ Accelerator for the ADS System in China

        An intense-beam Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator is under construction at Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Beijing. It accelerates a proton beam with an average current of 3mA at a 6 % duty factor to 3.5 MeV from 75 keV. This four-vane type 352-MHz RFQ has a length of 4.7m and is separated into two resonantly coupled segments. This paper will present the physics design and the technology development of the RFQ, including the beam dynamics design study, the measurement of cold models, quadrupole and dipole field tuning of the long cavity, and the RF power source system. Now, the RFQ is being installed, and the beam tuning will start in 2006.

        Set Stability of Controlled Chua’s Circuit under a Non-smooth Controller with the Absolute Value

        Chua’s circuit is a typical system with the piecewise-smooth vector field via the absolute value. A new piecewise-linear feedback control scheme with the absolute value is introduced to realize stabilization of sets of the controlled Chua’s circuit. The equilibrium sets and the global asymptotical stability with respect to several invariant sets, which may consist of both admissible and boundary equilibrium points or equilibrium manifolds, are investigated for the controlled Chua’s circuit system. The non-smooth controller has a simple structure and available control properties, and it is easy to be applied in engineering practice. It is shown by numerical simulations that this controller can effectively realize chaos control and stabilization of equilibrium states.

        허혈손상망막에 이식된 성체줄기세포의 소재 및 운명

        To investigate the differentiation potency of be engraft mesenchymal stem cells to the retinal cell population through the retina ischemia-reperfusion injury model of rat. Ischemic injury model was made by an elevation of intra-ocular pressure in young adult Sprague-Dawely rats. Adult stem cells of third passages labeled with DiI were applied by an intravitreous injection at 3, 5, and 7 days after the ischemia-reperfusion injury(PI), respectively, cared for 2 weeks, and in case of 7 days PI group were also cared for 4 and 6 weeks. For specification of engraft stem cells, immunofluorescent staining by antibodies against retinal neuronal marker molecules was done. Retinal ischemia led to reduce in both thickness and cell number, principally in the inner retina and to a lesser extent in the outer retina. DiI labeled stem cells were migrated and well associated with host retina tissue by 7 days PI. The retinas of stem cell engraft group were thicker than those of the ischemia group, however, and edematous caused maybe by cell suspension solution volume compared to those of normal control group. Stem cells were located mainly in the ganglion cell layer of 7 days PI engraft group, even though there was no co-localization of DiI and neuronal markers. These results suggest that stem cells influence endogenous neuroprotective mechanisms rather than differentiation into any retinal cell population against neuronal degeneration followed by ischemia injury. It has also been suggested that tissue-specific carriers are necessary for successful transplantation of stem cells into degenerated neral retinas.

      • Clinical Features and Prognosis of Patients with Benign Thyroid Disease Accompanied by an Incidental Papillary Carcinoma

        Purpose: To investigate the clinical features and prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with a background of benign disease. Method: A total of 709 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma undergoing surgical resection were analyzed retrospectively. In 147 patients who underwent surgery for benign thyroid disease, incidental PTC (IPC group) were identified by intraoperative or postoperative pathological examination of surgical specimens but were not detected by preoperative imaging studies. In the other group, according to the pathological examination with or without co-existing benign thyroid disease, 253 cases were clarified as concomitant PTC and 309 cases were clarified as dominant PTC. Results: Incidental PTC was more common in women, about 85.7%, the mean age was $47.6{\pm}11.3$ years old. Average tumor diameter was $4.4{\pm}2.2$ mm, multiple lesions accounted for 12.9% (19/147), and the cervical lymph node metastasis rate was 6.1% (9/147). After radical resection 8 cases recurred, the median time of recurrence was about 12 months (0.5 to 162), there was no tumor-related death. The tumor-free survival rates were 97.3%, 95.9%, 91.5%, and 79.3% in 1, 5, 10 and 14 year respectively. Conclusion: Incidental PTC with a background of benign lesions is common, and the generally good prognosis can be attributed to tumor early detection and early treatment. On the intraoperative finding of incidental PTC, lobectomy (unilateral) or total thyroidectomy (bilateral) should be the first choice, but with a postoperative pathologic finding of incidental PTC, further treatment, such as completion thyroidectomy or immediate lymph dissection is not necessary. Central lymph node dissection is also not needed unless lymphadenectasis is present.

      • Ultrastructural and mechanical changes in tubular epithelial cells by angiotensin II and aldosterone as observed with atomic force microscopy

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Tubular epithelial cells (TECs) play an important pathophysiological role in the promotion of renal fibrosis. Quantitative analysis of the mechanical changes in TECs may be helpful in evaluating novel pharmacological strategies. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a common nanotechnology tool used for imaging and measuring interaction forces in biological systems. In this study, we used AFM to study ultrastructural and mechanical changes in TECs mediated by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. We quantitatively analyzed changes in the mechanical properties of TECs using three extrinsic factors, namely, chemical fixation, angiotensin II (AT II), and aldosterone (AD). Fixed TECs were 11 times stiffer at the cell body and 3 times stiffer at the cell–cell junction compared to live TECs. After stimulation with AT II, live TECs were four times stiffer at the junctional area than at the cell body, while fixed TECs after AT II stimulation were approximately two times stiffer at the both cell body and cell–cell junction compared to fixed unstimulated TECs. Fixed TECs also reflected changes in the mechanical properties of TECs at the cell body region after AD stimulation. Together, our results suggest that cell stiffness at the cell body region may serve as an effective index for evaluating drugs and stimulation, regardless of whether the cells are live or fixed at the time of analysis. In addition, studying the changes to the intrinsic mechanical property of TECs after application of external stimuli may be useful for investigating pathophysiologic mechanisms and effective therapeutic strategies for renal injury.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We quantitatively analyzed the ultrastructure and mechanical changes in TECs. </LI> <LI> Three extrinsic factors including chemical fixation, AT II and AD treatments were used. </LI> <LI> The mechanical changes in fixed cells after stimuli can reflect those of live cells in cell body region. </LI> <LI> Cell stiffness at cell body region can be utilized as effective index for the evaluation of stimulation. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Interoperative Radiotherapy of Seventy-two Cases of Early Breast Cancer Patients During Breast-conserving Surgery

        Objective: To evaluate interoperative radiotherapy after breast conservative surgery in early breast cancer patients in terms of postoperative complications, cosmetic outcome and recurrence events. Methods: From June 2007 to Dec 2011, 143 early breast cancer patients received breast conservative surgery. Seventy-two (study group) received interoperative radiotherapy, compared with 71 patients (control group) given routine radiotherapy. Postoperative complications were evaluated 1 month after surgery; cosmetic outcome was evaluated 1 year postoperatively; recurrence and death events were followed up. Results: The average wound healing time was 13~22 d in the study group and 9~14 d in the control group. In the study group, 2 patients developed lyponecrosis, 16 patients showed wound edema while no such side effects were found in the control group. No infection or hematomas were found in either group. In the study group (59 cases), overall cosmetic outcome in 53 patients was graded as excellent or good, and in 6 as fair or poor. Meanwhile in the control group (56 cases), 42 patients were graded as excellent or good, and 14 as fair or poor (P=0.032). After a follow-up from 3 to 54 months (median: 32 months), two patients (2.78%) in study group developed local relapses, one of them (1.39%) died, 2 patients (2.78%) developed bone metastases. In control group, one patient (1.41%) developed local relapse, 2 patients (2.82%) developed bone metastases, and no one died. Conclusion: Intraoperative radiotherapy is safe and reliable with good cosmetic outcome.

        The Disadvantageous Influence and Improvement Measures of Stator Slot Skewed Structures on the Damper Winding Loss and Stator Core Loss of Tubular Hydro-Generators

        In this paper, a 34-MW integer slot tubular hydro- generator and an 18-MW fractional slot tubular hydro-generator were selected as examples to study the influence of the stator slot skewed structure on the damper winding loss, the stator core loss, and the no-load voltage waveform. The conclusions showed that although the stator slot skewed structure undoubtedly helped in improving the quality of the generator's no-load voltage waveform, it led to a significant increase in the eddy current loss of the damper winding and to an uneven distribution of the damper winding loss and stator core loss, which means that along the axis direction of the generator, the density of the damper winding loss and stator core loss significantly increased with the increase in the stator slot skewed degree. On this basis, the necessary measures for overcoming the above-mentioned disadvantages were discussed. Overall, the conducted research in this paper has direct and important reference values for improving the design and manufacturing levels of tubular hydro-generators, reducing their losses and heat, and optimizing their power quality.

        ‘항미원조’(抗美援朝) 위문단의 실체와 활동 양상 -한국전쟁을 통한 신중국의 문화정치

        한국전쟁시기에 중국은 총 세 차례 ‘항미원조’ 위문단을 북한으로 파견했다. 그 목적은 하나는 미제국주의와 싸우고 있는 중국인민지원군과 조선인민군을 위로함과 동시에 국내의 사정을 전달하여 지원군의 사기를 북돋아주기 위해서였고, 다른 하나는 신중국의 사회주의건설사업에 기여하기 위해서였다. 즉 위문 활동을 통해 직접 보고 들은 다양한 영웅사적과 미제국주의 만행을 중국인민들에게 선전하여 국제주의와 신중국에 대한 애국주의사상을 고취함으로써 전쟁동원과 신중국건설을 효과적으로 진행하려는 것이었다. 위문단 단원은 정치, 군사, 민족, 사회, 문화, 교육 등 국가 제반 구성 분야의 다양한 계층(노동자, 농민, 지식인, 여성, 학생, 군인 등)의 인물들로 구성되었다. 이들의 활동은 위문과 취재, 각종 좌담회와 공연 등 다양한 방식으로 전개되었는데, 그 과정은 그야말로 분노와 동정, 희생과 감동, 전투와 낭만, 감격과 위안의 감정으로 충만해 있었다. 그러한 감정은 귀국한 위문단의 국내 선전 활동을 통해 중국인민들에게도 고스란히 전달되었다. ‘항미원조’ 위문단은 조직구성과 구체적인 공연 활동에 이르기까지 신중국의 사회주의 정체성을 분명하게 드러냈다. 민주와 평등, 세계평화와 무산계급 연대를 강조한 국제주의 추구, 공산당정권 옹호를 기반으로 한 애국주의 지향 등이 바로 그 정체성이었다. 위문단은 국경을 넘나들며 신중국의 이러한 정체성 인식을 쌍방향으로 효율적 확산을 이루는 데 한몫했다. 이는 일종의 정치·문화적 퍼포먼스로서 ‘항미원조’ 위문단이 갖는 중요한 의미라고 할 수 있다. During the Korean War, China dispatched 'the Anti-US and Pro-Joseon Comfort' group to North Korea 3 times. The purpose of the comfort group was to comfort the Chinese People's Supporting Soldiers and Joseon People's Army fighting the US imperial forces and at the same time, inform them of China's situation to booster their morale. Another purpose was to promote the socialism construction projects in the new China. Namely, China wanted to propagate various heroic achievements of the Chinese soldiers and accuse the US imperialist soldiers and thereby, inspire Chinese people's international sense and patriotism for the new China to mobilize the people for the war and promote the construction of the new China effectively. The comfort group consisted of diverse classes (laborers, farmers, intellectuals, women, students, soldiers, etc.) in various areas such as politics, military, ethnic, society, culture, education, etc. Their activities were conducted in various forms such as consolation, legwork, meeting and performances. Their activities were full of anger and compassion, sacrifice and emotion, battle and romance, impression and comfort. Such emotion was delivered intact to the Chinese people through the comfort group's propaganda activities back home in China. The Anti-US and Pro-Joseon Comfort' group revealed their identity of socialists New China in terms of their organization and their specific performances. Their identity claimed for democracy and equality, internationalism empathizing world peace and solidarity of the proletariats, and patriotism supporting the communists regime. The comfort group played a role in propagating such identity of new China effectively by crossing the border. It was a political and cultural performance that stipulated the political meaning of the Anti-US and Pro-Joseon Chosun Comfort' group
