Replication of butterfly wing microstructures using molding lithography

        Shao-Hui Kang,Tzu-Yao Tai,Te-Hua Fang 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.2

This study employed a soft lithography technique to fabricate a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) replica of the multi-layered scales on the upper surface of a Morpho butterfly. The bionic photonic crystal microstructure of the replicated scales was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The absorptivity, reflectivity and fluorescent characteristics of the wing were measured. The results showed that the microstructural and optical characteristics of the replicated wing qualitatively agree with those of the actual wing. The contact angle for the natural wing structure and the replicated wing were about 143˚ and 120˚, respectively. As a result, it can be inferred that the soft lithography technique employed in this study represents a viable approach for the mass production of artificial photonic crystal structures for a variety of commercial applications, including optical elements for computing and communications purposes, photonic integrated circuits, anti-counterfeiting mechanisms, and so forth.

Size effect on nanomechanical properties of ZnO cones using in situ transmission electron microscopy

        Shao-Hui Kang,Te-Hua Fang,Tao-Hsing Chen,Ching-Hong Kuo 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.8

Nanoscale fracture and strain-induced structure variation of ZnO nanocones are determined using in situ transmission electron microscopy compression experiments. For the single-crystalline nanocones with diameters of 100-300 nm, the Young’s modulus is in the range of 7.7-48 GPa and the ultimate tensile strength is in the range of 2.4-4.3%. The Young’s modulus and tensile strength increase with decreasing diameter. Here, we report the nanogenerator of ZnO nanocones can be used mechanical energy to output 90 nW/mm2

An Improved Mesh Simplification Algorithm Based on Quadric Error Metrics

        Shao-Hui Huang,Bo-liang Wang,Wei-li Wu 대한의료정보학회 2007 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.13 No.2

Objective: Quadric Error Metrics (QEM) algorithm can simplify complex 3D models. However, for its simple error metrics, QEM is not suitable to simplify medical model that contains many minute detail features. We need to develop a new algorithm because we are often interested in these features. Methods: Based on QEM, We classify the vertex into seven classes. Different class has different cost of collapse. In our algorithm, collapse usually occurs with the lowest cost during simplification, thus minute feature can be preserved as possible. We also introduce the average of correlative triangles' area to estimate the volume change during the simplification. Results: We test our algorithm on several complex medical models and find that our improved algorithm is effective and fast. Conclusion: To simplify a complex medical model, we want to preserve the minute feature during simplification. By classifying the vertexes, we develop an improved algorithm based on QEM. The testing results shows that our algorithm not only maintains the high efficiency of QEM algorithm, but also meets the high requirements of medical image processing on fidelity and mesh quality. Isolation and molecular characterization of two novel HMW-GS genes from Chinese wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) landrace Banjiemang

        Hui Shao,Tian-hong Liu,Cong-Fu Ran,Li-Qun Li,Jing Yu,Xin Gao,Xue-Jun Li 한국유전학회 2015 Genes & Genomics Vol.37 No.1

High molecular weight glutenin subunits(HMW-GS) play a significant role in determining breadmakingqualities of common wheat flour. The study presentedin the paper identified two novel HMW-GS (designatedas 1Bx14* and 1By15*) at the Glu-B1 locus inChinese wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) landrace Banjiemangby SDS-PAGE. The open reading frames (ORFs) of thegenes were amplified and cloned with designed specificprimers. Both of them had sequences highly similar tothose of other HMW-GS genes, but displayed minormodification. The ORF of 1Bx14* was 2367 bp long andencoded 789 aa with 4 cysteines, which included 25nanopeptides, 65 hexapeptides and 7 tripeptides motifs. The ORF of 1By15* was 2106 bp long and encoded 702 aawith 7 cysteines, which included 23 nanopeptides and 53hexapeptides motifs. The predicted molecular weights ofthe mature proteins encoded by 1Bx14* and 1By15* geneswere 83.1 and 73.2 k Da, respectively. The presence andauthenticity of the two genes in Banjiemang were confirmedby bacterial expression and liquid chromatographyelectrosprayionization mass spectrometry (LC–ESI–MS). By phylogenetic analysis, the 1Bx14* was clustered withx-type subunits but had a high divergence with other 1Bxsubunits, whereas the 1By15* was clustered with y-typesubunits and closely related to subunit 1By15. The studyconcluded that 1Bx14* and 1By15* from Banjiemang werenovel allelic variations of HMW-GS at Glu-B1 locus, which were probably exploitable as new resources forwheat quality improvement.

      • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Awareness, Acceptability, and Decision-Making Factors among Chinese College Students

        Wang, Shao-Ming,Zhang, Shao-Kai,Pan, Xiong-Fei,Ren, Ze-Fang,Yang, Chun-Xia,Wang, Zeng-Zhen,Gao, Xiao-Hong,Li, Man,Zheng, Quan-Qing,Ma, Wei,Zhao, Fang-Hui,Qiao, You-Lin,Sivasubramaniam, Priya Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: College students are recommended as the target groups for catch-up human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Systematical exploration of awareness, acceptability, and decision-making factors of HPV vaccination among Chinese college students has been limited. Materials and Methods: A multi-center survey was conducted in mainland China between November 2011 and May 2012. College students aged 18-22 years were stratified by their grade, gender, and major for sampling. Socio-demographic and HPV-related information such as knowledge, perceptions, acceptability, and attitudes were collected through a questionnaire. Results: A total of 3,497 undergraduates completed the questionnaire, among which 1,686 were males. The acceptability of the HPV vaccine was high (70.8%). Undergraduates from high-level universities, at lower grade, or with greater prior knowledge of HPV vaccines showed higher acceptability of HPV vaccination ($p_{trend}$ <0.001). Additionally, undergraduates with vaccination experience outside the National Expanded Program on Immunization (OR=1.29; 95%CI: 1.10-1.51) or fear of HPV-related diseases (OR=2.79; 95%CI: 2.28-3.41) were more willing to accept HPV vaccination. General knowledge of HPV vaccine was low among undergraduates, and safety was a major concern (71.05%). The majority of students wished to pay less than 300RMB for HPV vaccine and chose the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention as the most appropriate venue for vaccination. Conclusions: Although most undergraduates demonstrate positive attitudes towards HPV vaccination, challenges pertaining to introduction exist in China. Corresponding proactive education and governmental subsidy to do so are urgently needed by this age-group population. Suggestions and potential strategies indicated may help shape the future HPV vaccination program in China.

Mitochondrial citrate accumulation drives alveolar epithelial cell necroptosis in lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury

        Yang Hui-Hui,Jiang Hui-Ling,Tao Jia-Hao,Zhang Chen-Yu,Xiong Jian-Bing,Yang Jin-Tong,Liu Yu-Biao,Zhong Wen-Jing,Guan Xin-Xin,Duan Jia-Xi,Zhang Yan-Feng,Liu Shao-Kun,Jiang Jian-Xin,Zhou Yong,Guan Cha-Xi 생화학분자생물학회 2022 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.54 No.-

Necroptosis is the major cause of death in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) during acute lung injury (ALI). Here, we report a previously unrecognized mechanism for necroptosis. We found an accumulation of mitochondrial citrate (citratemt) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated AECs because of the downregulation of Idh3α and citrate carrier (CIC, also known as Slc25a1). shRNA- or inhibitor–mediated inhibition of Idh3α and Slc25a1 induced citratemt accumulation and necroptosis in vitro. Mice with AEC-specific Idh3α and Slc25a1 deficiency exhibited exacerbated lung injury and AEC necroptosis. Interestingly, the overexpression of Idh3α and Slc25a1 decreased citratemt levels and rescued AECs from necroptosis. Mechanistically, citratemt accumulation induced mitochondrial fission and excessive mitophagy in AECs. Furthermore, citratemt directly interacted with FUN14 domain-containing protein 1 (FUNDC1) and promoted the interaction of FUNDC1 with dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), leading to excessive mitophagy-mediated necroptosis and thereby initiating and promoting ALI. Importantly, necroptosis induced by citratemt accumulation was inhibited in FUNDC1-knockout AECs. We show that citratemt accumulation is a novel target for protection against ALI involving necroptosis.

Research on Deformation of Flexible Side Plates in Intra-Vane Type Pumps and its Effect on Oil Film Thickness of the Flow Distribution Pair

Shao Nian Li,Hui Wang,Pan Yang,Yi Li,JunHu Yang 한국유체기계학회 2021 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.14 No.1

This paper sets up both a force balance equation and a three-dimensional geometric model of a flexible side plate in an intra-vane type pump, after analyzing the structure and mechanical properties of the plate. The formulas for calculating deformation were obtained, and the theoretical curve of change in deformation was determined. Then, the contour of deformation was obtained using software simulation. The calculated and simulated values of deformation of the flexible side plate, in three positions under four working pressures, were found to be close to one another, the relative error between them being less than 2%. Next, the formula for the calculation of oil film thickness was obtained, and the curve of the change in oil film thickness relative to the distance along the radial direction of the side plate was determined, considering the flexible side plate deformation. The oil film thickness for three flexible side plate positions were then tested through experiment. The calculated values of oil film thickness were also close to the tested values. Although there was a small difference, the relative error between them was less than 5% for the oil film thickness measured at its lowest point, which indicates the accuracy of the results obtained by the theoretical calculation.

      • Adaptive compensation method for real-time hybrid simulation of train-bridge coupling system

        Hui M. Zhou,Bo Zhang,Xiao Y. Shao,Ying P. Tian,Wei Guo,Quan Gu,Tao Wang 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.83 No.1

Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) was applied to investigate the train-bridge interaction of a high-speed railway system, where the railway bridge was selected as the numerical substructure, and the train was physically tested. The interaction between the two substructures was reproduced by a servo-hydraulic shaking table. To accurately reproduce the high-frequency interaction responses ranging from 10-25Hz using the hydraulic shaking table with an inherent delay of 6-50ms, an adaptive time series (ATS) compensation algorithm combined with the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) was proposed and implemented in the RTHS. Testing cases considering different train speeds, track irregularities, bridge girder cross-sections, and track settlements featuring a wide range of frequency contents were conducted. The performance of the proposed ATS+LQG delay compensation method was compared to the ATS method and RTHS without any compensation in terms of residual time delays and root mean square errors between commands and responses. The effectiveness of the ATS+LQG method to compensate time delay in RTHS with high-frequency responses was demonstrated and the proposed ATS+LQG method outperformed the ATS method in yielding more accurate responses with less residual time delays.
